To be honest here, many of us are still eating the same way we did in our twenties and wondering why our bodies are suddenly “misbehaving.”The truth is, nothing is wrong with you. Your body is simply changing, but most of us don’t want to admit it. We ignore the signs, push through the discomfort, and say things like, “I’ve always eaten this food, it can’t be the problem.” But it is. And it’s time we talked about it properly. Your Body Is Not as Young as Your Mind In your head, you still feel the same. You can still work long hours, stay up late, and handle stress. So you assume your body should cooperate. Unfortunately, the body doesn’t work like that. As you get older, your metabolism slows down. This means your body no longer burns food as quickly as it used to. That rice you ate late at night? Before, nothing happened. Now, you wake up feeling heavy, tired, or bloated. It’s not village people. It’s biology. Digestion Is Not What It Used to Be Many Nigerians don’t like to hear this, but the stomach also gets older. With age, your body produces fewer digestive enzymes. These enzymes help break down food properly. When they reduce, certain foods start to cause problems. This is why: Milk suddenly makes you uncomfortable Beans gives you serious bloating Heavy swallow makes you feel sluggish for hours Instead of adjusting, we say, “I’ll manage it.” But managing discomfort every day is not wisdom. Your Gut Has Changed, Even If You Refuse to Accept It Your gut bacteria, the ones helping you digest food, change over time. Stress, medication, poor sleep, and years of eating processed food all affect them. So when you eat the same foods now and your body reacts differently, it’s not drama. Your gut is telling you something has changed. Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. It just makes the reaction louder. Sugar and Refined Carbs Are No Longer Your Friends. This one is painful, but we need to talk about it. As you get older, your body becomes more sensitive to sugar and refined carbohydrates. White bread, pastries, sugary drinks, and even too much white rice can now cause: Sudden tiredness Headaches Mood changes Weight gain around the stomach But because “we’ve always eaten it,” we pretend not to notice the effects. Your body is no longer forgiving like before. Inflammation Is the Silent Problem We Ignore Many foods we eat regularly increase inflammation in the body, especially highly processed foods, too much oil, sugar, and alcohol. When inflammation increases, your body reacts more strongly to food. Joint pain, constant fatigue, stomach issues, and even brain fog can start showing up. Most of us just call it “stress” and move on. But the body is speaking. Are we listening? What Your Body Is Asking for Now Your body is not asking you to stop eating. It’s asking you to eat better. As you get older, your body responds more to: Proper portions More protein More vegetables Less processed food Enough water (many of us are guilty here) Quality now matters more than quantity. The Truth We Need to Accept Aging is not punishment. It’s adjustment. The problem is not that your body is reacting differently to food. The problem is that many of us refuse to adjust our habits. We hold on to old eating patterns and then complain when our bodies no longer cooperate. Wisdom is knowing when to change approach. Final Words If certain foods no longer sit well with you, it’s not a personal failure. It’s your body asking for attention. Listen to it. Adjust. Do better. Your future self will thank you.

Anything wey Una go talk, make Una no carry am near beer. Anyways, snark aside, I am taking a very keen interest in the emerging field of medical knowledge that is of the view that our digestive system has an entirely different nervous system of its own. That gut bacteria and by extension, the food we eat, plays a deep role in our psychology and mental health. This is an exciting frontier. |

Modern humans food is not healthy. Especially commercial food and packaging from factory. Procciesing food is bad. Any food you pickup and eat like that is the healthiest food. Any root or plant you can pick up and cook to eat is healthy food But any food that you pickup but first need to process before you can eat it is bad for you e.g cassava. Thats why Yam, potato, coco yam, plantain is the better alternative for you. Procces food have a concentration of starch and sugar. Which is modern day sickness and decease. |

Eating heavy swallows these days, especially eba and fufu make me feel weak and sluggish. This is not how I used to feel when I was young. I'm having similar experience with alcohol too, except palm wine. Beer and bitters in particular are no-go-areas for me, unlike many years ago when I could gulp as many bottles as possible. What dominates my daily diets these days are fruits, vegetables and green herbs. No side effects at all. |

Mikocake:Sugar is not the killer. Excess sugar especially as an adult is. Carbohydrate you eat is converted to sugar and your body processes sugar faster at younger age than older age. |

Indeed. Sugar is the real enemy. Most people don't realise that |

From the day we were born, human body has started breaking down. We are a machine, created with flaws and bound to breakdown irrespective of what we eat. |

Thanks very much sir. This information is very important. All the symptoms mentioned here is what we are battling in old age. Some people attributed it to village people, others suspected Stress while others suspected poisonous foods. So, it is old age. Thanks for this information. |

I have been personally struggling with this. And my friends have been recommending a dietician. But with my strong head, I have been saying it is spiritual attacks every morning. Years of Sharwama and Fanta have finally caught up with me. If I was seeing you face to face, I for curse you. But since it's online, I thank you deeply from the bottom of my heart. |

Refined sugar that is sold and added to food is not good because it is easily absorbed by the body which causes a sudden spike in glucose level and forces to body to produce insulin to deal with it. This is not healthy. The carbohydrates that we eat (e.g yam, garri, brown rice e.t.c) naturally comes with fibre which moderate the conversion and release of glucose into the blood stream which is an healthier alternative. The rule of thumb is eat natural and organic while shunning processed food by all means erniok: |

29Ade07:Agreed totally. My position is excess. If you take a coke bottle in a week or 2, your body won't struggle unlike taking it daily. |

Overall you need to excersise everyday. Doesn't have to be a heavy one. A simple 30minutes walk everyday couple with eating fruits after meal will do a lot good to ones health as you age. |

Nice write up. But none of these tips is applicable to those living in the village. Its only meant for us living in the cities, chasing everything and cutting corners. An old man or woman in Ekiti still eats same amount of pounded yam he's been eating since he was young, nothing has changed. He still treks kms to and from his farm daily, burns calories and sweats like no man's business as he works in his farmland. He gets to farm, plucks fresh vegetables, even plucks the traditional pepper that acts as a detox with lots of health benefits, grinds it and adds the vegetable with locust beans, no seasonings, only salt is added. He catches rodents or bush meat eating his farm produce and eats it fresh. He goes to the swampy area of the farm, cuts the cane sugar and eats almost a whole stick under a cool environment where he inhales fresh oxygenated air, free from free radicals. He drinks water at the streams, water that has travelled kms or those coming from underneath the rocks which had swept off calcium and magnesium as it travels along its course, which are vital to the body. Many of them walk straight even in old age without using a stick. He drinks palmwine and feels good. Don't forget locust beans and palmwine help your eyesight's wellness. He has his dinner before 7pm and goes to sleep then wake up as early as 5am and gets set to hit the road to his farm. In the city, the reverse is the case. We go to work as early as 6am and come back late, from home ac to car AC and to ac in the office. No time to do exercise even to eat that food taken to work becomes difficult. We cant trek a long distance.its either keke or uber. Breakfast turns to brunch. And the cycle continues. My granny only visited hospital when he had his hernia surgery at old age. He had never stepped into hospital all his life for treatment. We eat vegetables that had travelled far and beaten by sun on the road. We preserve everything, drink iced water always, eat frozen foods that had spent months on the high sea. We see kids wearing recommended eyeglasses, some as thick as test tubes in lenses. We hardly enjoy sound sleep and our atmosphere is polluted with free radicals. |
