Mankind2024:
Newgold ETF Enters Arbitrage Territory Between Nigeria and South Africa.
Newgold, an exchange-traded fund (ETF), issued by ABSA is now the focus of a notable cross-border arbitrage opportunity.
It is primarily listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in South Africa and secondarily listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in Nigeria.
I have been closely monitoring this low-volume ETF on the NGX since January 2026. The price action reveals a striking divergence: on the NGX, Newgold appears to be artificially pumped, with its market price rising sharply and seemingly defying normal downward pressure. In contrast, the identical ETF is in free fall on the JSE, where the price has dropped significantly.
Credit to South African traders (including those using ABSA platforms). By exploiting this price gap, they are legally converting Nigerian naira into South African rand — effectively absorbing scarce foreign exchange from Nigeria’s already limited reserves.
I believe the NGX should take urgent regulatory or operational steps to address this imbalance.
Current prices (as observed):
On the NGX: ₦186,000 – ₦196,000 per unit
On the JSE: R700 – R740 per unit
Fair-value comparison (using Oanda exchange rates):
₦180,000 ≈ R2,229
R700 ≈ ₦56,384
In other words, based on the JSE price and current exchange rates, the true fair value of Newgold on the NGX should be no higher than ₦56,000 – ₦58,000. The ETF is currently trading at more than three times that level on the Nigerian exchange.
This significant premium creates a clear arbitrage window for traders who can navigate the currency and settlement differences between the two markets. Investors should monitor the situation closely, as any corrective action by the NGX or a convergence in prices could rapidly close the gap.
Wouldn't arbitrage in this case be when they are selling at NGX to buy in SA? I asked because it is assumed to be overpriced on NGX currently. I'm not sure if there is anything like quarterly reports with these ETFs, so it's hard to say what the price is supposed to be.

I saw unusual movement in that ETF recently. In fact, some folks exhancged it at N5m per unit a few weeks ago. I even placed a few at that price that didn't fill.

Before that time, the ETF was apparently not obeying the 10% rule and could jump erratically. This has been fixed but it's still not obeying the 100k units. I will assume that all the ETFs don't.

Which part of my comment did you deem careless, please? And what is the stock doing in response to the results you seem to like so much?

Are we looking at just the headlines or trying to understand the business? The fundamental story of Chams is that it's a low-margin price-taker. These results affirm that, and margins are headed in the wrong direction despite modest growth and brutal cost discipline. I'm sorry you like the stock, but that investment story is not a screaming buy.

yMcy56:
Pls don't make careless remarks just because you don't have the stock or you want to get back to someone.

Nothing is wrong with CHAMS result, in fact there's a lot of improvements there.
Revenue increased, PAT increased.

By the time the Court judgement is announced in favour of CHAMS, there'll be more revenue to do biz and CHAMS price will appreciate more.

What we are witnessing in the market shares of CHAMS may have a pointer to positive things.......Are you even following it at all?

I replied you here because I've been gotten chat messages asking me what you mean and what it implies...
* This forum is wider than we think, let's all desist from derogatory posts that could affect some investors negatively pls.

It is better they list at N10. Private Placement was at N8.
Sterling Bank is trading below N8

Really?
Well, time will tell.
It is better undervalued so that investors can benefit more when the price appreciates

Who says UNITY is coming back as UNITY?
The arrangement with PROVIDUS is acquisition.......and if it's merger, then the name cant come back as UNITY either.

As at now, we still needed update on the merger self.

T+2 is talking about withdrawal of fund into your bank account, if you need to withdrawal some funds.
* T+2 means Time sold + 2 days after.

It's possible to sell shares in the morning and receive the proceed the second day.....but you'll have to pay some fees for processing it because it's not yet up to the settlement time/day.

Did PROVIDUS mention listing on NGX after merger?
Because what I read the last time was swapping of shares of UNITY for PROVIDUS at certain ratio or buyout of UNITY shareholders at 3.20 or so......the price UNITY attained at some point.

Normal activity. Where expecting the stock to remain in full bid for life?

Hopefully, a trend reversal will happen, but PT will still their thing.

Several publications indicate they may list on NGX after the conclusion of the Unity acquisition/merger. Below is a sample
