Atije gbese lowo Tinubu... I mean, Gbogbo wa! 😩
Just sitting here thinking about the endless taxes and levies that have come to stay in Naija. Dem no dey tire.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
Mandatory insurance for houses and vehicles (no escape)
New road/green tax for vehicles (that 2-4% surcharge on big-engine cars from July 2026)
Vehicle licence/disc renewal
Driver’s licence renewal
Tenement rate
Prepaid electricity (abi na tax too?)
Personal Income Tax (PIT)
Marriage permit and registration fees
Radio and TV licence
VAT (everywhere, on everything)
And for those of us that signed the covenant with NGX (the real wealth club):
SEC fees
NGX fees
VAT (again!)
Brokerage fees
10% Dividend Withholding Tax
10% on Treasury Bills
CSCS-related fees
JAPA people are not spared, as passport fee done skyrocket.
Spiritual taxes
Black taxes
Gbogbo wa! From the moment you wake up till you sleep, dem dey tax your life from every angle. Breathing go soon get levy.
How person go survive this one? Or na just to keep quiet and pay like good pikin?
FIRE is the way out..

Investors in UBA should be worried about the growing provisions for bad loans in Q1 which is pointer to challenges business are facing in the economy today.

This should begin to worry any serious investor if it continues into Q2, and is a pointer to what most of the banks will face going forward.

Are we going back to the era of huge non-performing loans threatening shareholders funds huh

Yes they’ve been around beyond the 80s, but they became “the construction company of choice” during the Babangida era from 85-93. After becoming a public limited company with significant interest from the elite ruling class, you expect them to keep awarding contracts to themselves. Julius Berger got contracts without bidding when they were close enough to the government of the day as well, which is my position here. There are many verifiable, authoritative reports on that. If Julius Berger benefited from it, others can as well do. The best bet is for favoritism to stop altogether, not a few benefiting from corruption and then it’s an outcry when some others benefit.

To add to that, direct contracting or sole-source contracts are allowed under Public Procurement Act (PPA) 2007. So if Hitech won the contract without bidding, does the awarding of the contract contravene extant law?
This is not true at all o! There were companies like Dumez, Cappa and Dalberto, Strabane, RCC, Dantata and Sawoe, Westminster Dredging, SAE Engineering, etc who bidded for jobs alongside Julius Berger at the federal ministry of works in Lagos.

Many forget that even the Lagos State had significant shares in Julius Berger as well as the company had a strong foothold in dredging operations at that time which suited the topography of the Federal Capital at that time (Lagos) amongst the strong financing and technical expertise sourced from the parent company in Germany.

The company had a lot of advantages that made it the preferred option as well as technical partners to other construction companies.

Where do you think UBA will find her strong support ( ref chart below) and why?
However, on our Common sense estimation, it still has value at 3.1x4 x4  = 49.6 ( based on Q1 2026) being that the present scenario has probably already been priced in.

Buying anywhere below the 20 % below that value would be great

That’s below 49.60 x 80% = 39.68

I will gladly load UBA at N36.00-39.68, averaging down if necessary. However, if Wema Bank's Q1 2026 is fantastic, it will help UBA as it will be difficult to price Wema Bank above UBA. Wema will rise and take UBA with it. Can Wema turn in an EPS of 3.1 for Q1 2026? Let’s wait and see. Wema’s 4th quarter of 2025 ( from FY UFS) suggests that it is possible should it maintain that same momentum, to double earnings.

Where is UBA getting more than ₦300 billion foreign currency revaluation loss from at a time naira is relatively stable and I do not see a huge foreign currency position on the balance sheet. Back this out or if you position that this will not repeat going forward, then the first quarter result is fantastic.

In the 2025 audited result, this is not labelled exactly ₦300bn FX revaluation, It appears as:
Fair value loss on derivatives contracts with counterparties which i believe would still vomit our money. More like margin lending.
Exchange-rate related market loss
FX-driven valuation adjustments
The amount reported:
Net fair value loss on derivatives = ₦278 billion
Triggered largely by foreign exchange volatility
This is what anti UBA analysts refer to as the ≈₦300bn FX revaluation loss.

The total international subsidiaries contribution:
Foreign operations profit: ₦312 billion
Previous year: ₦223 billion
Growth: +40%+
This is explicitly stated in the performance discussion.

Breakdown in report commentary:
West Africa subsidiaries +53% profit growth
East & Central Africa +61% growth
International business provided earnings buffer against Nigeria slowdown.
This cancel out the Fair value loss on derivatives.
QED

Why should there be tax on people providing power for themselves where government has failed to do sohuh Lagos is far richer than Abia which is generating power.. that's how we heard of borehole tax sometime ago.. so struggling artisans in government estates will pay solar tax abi? Government should sort out waste disposal.. psp operators in several areas no longer come. After yesterday's sanitation, how will the waste and refuse be evacuated?? It's a peculiar mess.. literally
Sir, even in a private estate I live here in Lagos, Solar Panels are not allowed, not sure why though, but this is the estate rule, if you are not comfortable with it, you have to move out, simple.

Because the estate is probably selling electricity (NEPA+Gen) to you and most likely at exorbitant rates. Allowing solar will mess up their business.
