are you thinking you cannot do at least 20% capital appreciation per annum in these companies.
Your dividend plust capital gain should outpace the bond
It is good very you have raw cash to buy stocks in a down market, that is the essence of diversification and that is how to build good units of shares.

Capital appreciation is not predictable, but investment income is predictable .

Mind you, you did not sell all your shares the remaining shares will enjoy the capital appreciation you are looking for but the bond will produce regular income

I honestly don't want to talk but take a look at when MTN was punished... It fell from almost above 300 naira to 168 naira
Itzlinda:

Will you also lose your dividend or investment income?

Borrow based on the multiple of your income, which is maximum of twice your predictable income.

You will only get burnt if you are over leveraged and greedy .
Reason why some of us have FGN bonds in our portfolio, it stabilizes the portfolio, gives juicy yield and predictable cash flow
the key word "predictable" cash flow.

Whatever works for you. I only have GTB, Zenith and a Stanbic.

Banks are just 9% of my total portfolio, fixed income is 6% and I am planning to increase Fixed income to between 25% to 30% of my portfolio

Lasaco Assurance Plc and Guinea Insurance Plc Rights issue is a total mess.

Market price is lower than their Rights Issue prices of N2.00 and N1.10 respectively.

It's a mess. I won't be surprised if both stocks get kicked out soon from the stock market...
Worst case scenario is that they will be acquired by other insurance companies. grin grin

Thank you for this.

I am examining my numbers as of today and your analysis makes a lot more sense regarding predictable incomes. Dividend yield compared to fixed income yield is only about 1.6% for my entire portfolio worth thanks to the run up most stocks have had over the last 12 months. Time to move accounts. Always a delight to read your opinion. smiley

Overall portfolio dividend yield of 5% is not bad but 1.6% is damn too low for an income investor.

I think you have a lot of non dividend paying stocks in your portfolio

Quite frankly, your message is filled with wisdom.

I think the current CBN management has not put the economic well being of the investors into consideration while formulating banking laws.
That's another ugly face of this government's policy of always wanting to take from the people. Fuel price up, energy price up, tax up, and now the CBN is blocking the dividends that should go to the people for their investment. They want to say they don't know the market would react to this? Trump syndrome... "I didn't know Iran would retaliate..." blah blah blah

Access and UBA exposure brought the numbers down. Only PZ doesn't pay dividend in my portfolio for now in addition to UBA and access which I have already discounted but the capital appreciation has made up for it in 200 fold. All others pay but not substantial enough to pull the portfolio to a yield of 5%
