May bless my hand work and provide enough money for me to take care of my family, and , if I'm not financially buoyant enough, then my mind will be at rest that i won't be panicking looking for loan up and down to pay school fees when there is NELFUND .
So you would invariably allow your kids to be put under the financial strain of loan repayment when they graduate. Go and ask Americans who in their 50s are still repaying student loans how they are feeling about it. Try and have conscience small, not because of crumbs you will talk like this.

Jaycee07:
NELFUND is a gigantic scam. The finance minister was bragging the other day how 1.5 million students have so far benefited from NELFUND. And a little research shows that in Nigeria, there are approximately 2 million students in the tertiary institutions. Invariably, the finance minister implied that for every 4 students in Nigeria tertiary institutions, 3 are beneficiaries of NELFUND. Do you believe that?
The problem with Nigerians is that successive governments have hoodwinked them into believing that they can never get it any better. And they wholeheartedly believe their government. The lack of accountability and transparency in the government is so glaring. No one asks questions. And if this trend is allowed to continue, a time when will come when the government will demand their kidneys, and some people will donate it.
Exactly

It's for those that don't have money for tertiary education and will 'wish' to take the loan for it and pay back when they are through with education and are working. That what the focus is on. Do not shift the point please.
Why can't the govt have or even expand the scholarship scheme for these people?

How does this translate to more hardship for an average Nigerian who doesn't have regular power supply?
it means you will start paying for connecting any form of wires from any electric pole to your house, even without electricity

Interesting angle.

Not sure how an annual solar tax will work in practice. First of all, it will face strong resistance. People are going through hell to get alternative energy solutions and to be rid of PHCN and all its nonsense. Most people won't go through all that pain only to stand back and watch as government introduces some rubbish solar tax.

Second, how will this tax be imposed in practice? Will government go to every home to check who's using inverters or panels? Or government will impose a flat tax once a household starts consuming less PHCN units and it is clear the household is now relying on its own off grid solutions? Either way it isn't practical. The only way government may be able to rope people into this solar tax rubbish is if the tax is imposed at source (higher duties on all new units sold for example) for all new solar units sold let's say as from next year.
Did you follow the news where Lagos State government came out to say the only people paying the "solar panel tax" were those living in government housing schemes?

If they've started it already for those living in housing schemes, then it's very possible. Just that some states like Lagos will be able to enforce it while in some others, you'll almost dare not come to collect tax for that.

The other option is what you pointed out, they might introduce a VERY HIGH import tariff for panels and inverters, that something that usually cost X naira will now cost times 3 of the current price, just to stop people from getting it

Are you serious ?
If they are increasing such , because their aim is to make people in Nigeria to pay for electricity at the price rate those in developed country are paying for .

Before doing that they should make to also upgrade the pocket those that will be forced to pay the new tariffs.

The tariff this man is forcing Nigerians to pay is absurd, unnatural, inorganic, abnormal, irrational, illogical it doesn't makes sense at all.

If a that minority pres was on seat, there would have been widespread protests and these absurd increments would have been reversed. But we have a majority not even one of his uncountable absurd increments has been reversed !

The man is literally scorging the back of Nigerians with stinging scorpions.

Black subsaharan people dey really suffer!

Na Blackman suffer pass for this world

Even some people that are fighting ferocious war have more allowances and subsidies they enjoy than even blacks in certain parts of the world called Nigeria.

They are the at the lowest of the pecking order of human race in this current world dispensation.

The way I laugh at fuulish students who think NELFUND is a pathway to their escape from joblessness after graduation is very loud.

It's not subsidy oh! It's the Baron's gimmick of telling you you'll refund the money after election year and definitely the new tax law is already in place waiting to be activated if the demoñ gets back to aso rock come 2027.

I pity Nigerians, you don't know what hell looks like until a wicked man like the baron starts implementing Hell's policies.

A wicked spirit is a wicked spirit. And that spirit currently lives in aso rock.
At least ,they wont drop out because of lack of fund and their parent will focus on other things .

NELFUND won't chase them around like palm pay.
Untill they are gainfully employed, the employer shall remit 10% of their salary to the pocket of the government. If nkt employed, no cause for Alarm, write to Nelfund , they will get you a job but make sure you are employable and not with that type of Obi's result

The subsidy that currently exist on electricity tariffs is on Band B - Band E.

Band A is no longer subsidised.

The implication of this is a likely increase in Band B - Band E Tariffs, no Band A's.
The highest electricity tariff is what's obtainable with the Band A.

It will be interesting to watch.

LASG has not been able to collect land use charges from some landlords for several years. If they can't collect land use charges (a very old tax that actually has a legal basis), then how will they collect a solar tax from privately owned homes (a tax that government will struggle mightily to justify in court?) After all, what basis does government have for taxing a land owner who mounts solar panels on the roof of his/her private property?)

I can imagine there will be a strong legal challenge in court and the government's case will be thrown out. The only way government can win is if the solar tax is so small that people simply can't be bothered...or the tax is well disguised as something else. If it is a tax big enough and obvious enough that people cannot ignore - then they will challenge government in court and government will lose.

And the revenue or savings (or whatever you want to call it) from the subsidy removal will still be wasted by government in the end...wasted on subsidizing religion and other 'things' like that. What's the point, then? undecided

Let us see how they will enforce it, if the panels are in a 5 story building installed via scaffolding so the government going rent scaffolders too ahahah

The issue of SOLAR TAX has been on the front burner for some time now. For the past 5 years There's been an astonomical rise in Solar power installations across the country.
This is depriving the DISCOs of revenue. As more meters are being released and home owners still opting for alternative power supply (not Gen), the DISCOs will have no choice than to increase their tariffs which will backfire.
There are many ways to tax solar homes.
1. A flat rate to be bought monthly as token irrespective whether you used DISCO light or not. IBED flew that kite recently. It was fortunately shot down
2. Another way is to increase the import duty. That might slow down the market but Nigerians will adapt.

Next year , the FG will introduce the solar tax to prop up their ailing DISCOs, to ensure they still get revenue from you regardless of their service.

Wow. I didn't know it was like this in lagos. We also have light here constantly. Sharada is a prime area in kano so I don't think there are places where they pay much more than this. Definitely not up to 100 naira.

I noticed that life in the south is generally more expensive than the north in many aspects maybe except education. Thats the only thing I think is more expensive here than the south from my interactions. That's why a 150k salary here may offer the same life comfort with someone with almost 400k in lagos. I once got a job in lagos with free launch and free accommodation in three bedroom flat in ikeja and 450k salary. I refused it.
There are different bands in Nigeria. This is band A. You're lucky to have constant light at this price. Lagosians would almost kill for this.

It was evennhigher previously I think it came down abit. I'm so glad the weather is cold now so no need for ac. Previously that 2k won't last the night with ac on my usual bill.

It is well.

Nigerians should be preparing for that. Though the policy might be tough as the beginning but it's for the king term sustainability of the sector.

The ones that people are plugging cooker, ironing cloth at the same time while electronics are on, it's because they are not paying the real value for the electricity

Subsidy is good to go but it shouldn’t be in 2027. May be in 2030.

By the way, here is a perspective of an experienced engineer, a former MD of TCN, on our power sector:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD2SJ7HRpk0?is=JPGBcNsbRStR0CBS

The interview was very insightful. As usual, Rufai didn’t allow us to ‘enjoy’ the man well.

May be he should be brought back, to conclude the interview.

This president sha

You don't remove subsidy and at the same time devalue your currency.

Removing the subsidies should be enough justification to keep that official exchange rate before the last massive devaluation.

Prices wouldn't have been this high !

For example instead of band A to be paying N245 per unit

It would be around 85 to 125 naira per unit.

Unfortunately, you are quite correct with your assertions above. I would not have believed it if I wasn't aware of a couple of related cases a few years ago.

A few people got tired (really, really tired) of all that PHCN nonsense of estimated billing and the shameful, senseless, "government approved" undecided artificial scarcity of prepaid meters. They decided to go off grid completely (or nearly completely)...and fortunately for them, they had the resources to make it happen. They simply stopped using PHCN & DISCO electricity and found inner peace.

The PHCN & DISCO people found out that they were losing revenue because these customers were no longer using their services. Believe or not - their (PHCN/DISCO) next move was to accuse their customers of illegal activity i.e. 'illegal connection' even though these people showed evidence that they were 100% reliant on solar power. undecided I don't know how the matter was eventually resolved but the sheer audacity of those PHCN/DISCO guys was something else.

I say I no wan do again. I don go buy solar and I no need una light again. Na fight? undecided

It is this sort of nonsense that reinforces the belief that government in 5th world countries is predatory by nature.
