While the pains of fuel subsidy removal still linger, the confusion surrounding a planned electricity tariff increment starting from January 1, 2024 has compounded the worries.

It was gathered that the officials of the Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) held a virtual emergency meeting recently to formalise and perfect the planned tariff increase.

A source in one of the DisCos, who claimed anonymity, confirmed the development to Daily Trust on Sunday.

The source said: “All has been perfected for the new tariff to take effect from the first of January, 2024.

It is now left for various electricity distribution companies to enlighten their customers on new developments.”

The source said the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had already invited distribution companies for a meeting on the development.
He expressed fear that while it is mandatory for electricity distribution companies to regularly evaluate tariffs every six months, the recent increase would meet customers’ dissatisfaction.

“In fact, we were perturbed by the short notice and how we would reach out to our customers about the increase,” he said.
Asked how much the increase would be, the source said, “No idea so far, but the uncertainty has put us in a difficult situation.”

Recall that in November 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stopped the implementation of the electricity tariff, insisting on a power sector subsidy.

Speaking on Tinubu’s directive on electricity tariff hikes, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said, “The power sector is an industry that is very sensitive to any leader.

“You cannot jump overnight and implement the cost-reflective tariff. I can tell you that till today, the government still subsidises power”.

I have not seen any Minister of Tinubu doing anything reasonable in this administration....

Just giving excuses, throwing blames and waiting for Nigerians to react before they come out and address the media.

Just imagine the silly excuse Adelabu is giving.

This useless disco are just a useless hopeless organization. Nigeria electricity supposed to be competing with what Nigeria are earning from crude oil of course we have the population. Many communities not see electricity light for 10 years even in urban areas you still can't guarantee 8 hours power supply. You keep increasing tariffs every month like you are selling pepper.

DISCOS have always wanted high tariff without a commensurate improvement in efficient distribution by replacing aged and undersized transformers and large scale metering of consumers for objective costing of power consumed.

Darkness costs more in Nigeria

E nor go better for disco

Bunch of Incompetent bastards.

THEIR MAJOR PROBLEM IS THEIR NONCHALANT ATTITUDE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

MANY NIGERIANS ARE NOT PAYING FOR POWER, THE FEW THAT ARE PAYING ARE NOT PAYING THE CORRECT AMOUNTS. SOME ARE UNDERPAYING AND MOST ARE OVERPAYING, ESPECIALLY PEOPLE ON ANALOGUE METERS.

MANY NIGERIANS ON PREPAID METERS HAVE BYPASSED THEIR METERS, CHEATING THE SYSTEM.
THE USELESS POWER COMPANY DON'T DO ROUTINE CHECKS ON THEIR METERS TO CHECK FOR ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS, EVEN WHEN WHISTLE BLOWERS REPORT, THEY WON'T COME TO INVESTIGATE.

MANY OF THEIR STAFF ARE EVEN THE ONES HELPING PEOPLE TO DO THE ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS.
