Oga Sir, so all of a sudden, the dividend that FBNH pays will become a yardstick or parameter for the industry?

Mba nu!

All these years that FBNH were paying Kulikuli and Akara money, nobody hold Dem for cloth. Besides, banks like GT and Zenith I believe always have their policy on ground concerning that. For oga Elumelu, I doubt if he can be stampeded even if FBNH spends their entire profit and borrow from World Bank to pay dividend.

Having a dividend payout policy brings some certainty so shareholders would be sure of the minimum dividend they will be receiving at the end of the year.
Just imagine FBNH declaring an EPS of N20 by Q3, that means a minimum of N12 dividend!
This will influence UGAZ to pay same or higher ratio. A standard is being set gradually

One of the nation’s commercial banks, SunTrust Bank Plc, is currently battling to recover over N800 million allegedly lost to hackers when its server was hacked between 2023 and 2026.

Meanwhile, the operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) have arraigned one of the alleged hackers, a 47-year-old man, Ugochukwu Eze, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, over the illicit and heinous financial crimes.

Ugochukwu, also known as Amazon, was arraigned today before the court presided over for allegedly hacking into the server of Suntrust Bank Plc, and fraudulently removing and diverting over N800 million into several accounts

DSS lawyer, M. Bajela Esq, informed the court that the defendant and others now at large, between 2023 and 2026, conspired among themselves and unlawfully and seriously hindered the function of Suntrust Bank Plc’s computer system (server) and, in the process, fraudulently diverted over N800 million belonging to the bank.

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by essentialone(m): 5:29am On Aug 07
Current Nigerian tax rules.

*What the law says now*

*1. Capital losses CAN offset capital gains*
The Finance Act 2023 introduced "tax-loss harvesting" for Capital Gains Tax (CGT). It allows you to *set off capital losses from disposal of chargeable assets against capital gains from disposal of assets of a similar class*.
Unabsorbed capital losses can also be *carried forward for up to 5 years* and used against future capital gains of the same asset class.

This was also reaffirmed in the Nigeria Tax Act 2025: *losses can offset gains*, and *losses can be carried forward for up to 5 years*.

So if you sell Stock A at a loss, and later sell Stock B at a gain this year, you can use that documented loss to reduce the taxable gain.

*2. Key conditions to note*
- *Same asset class*: The loss must be from the same class of asset as the gain. For stocks, losses from shares can offset gains from shares.
- *Documentation*: You must keep proper records of the loss — contract notes, disposal statements, etc.
- *12-month rolling period*: Under NTA 2025, all disposals within any 12 consecutive months are aggregated to check thresholds. So timing of your profitable sale matters.
- *Exemptions*: Individuals with proceeds ≤₦150m annually AND gains ≤₦10m are exempt. Small investors often fall within this.

*3. What changed recently*
Some reports mentioned that "capital losses aren’t deductible". That was under a draft interpretation. The prevailing position in Finance Act 2023 and NTA 2025 is that *loss offset IS permitted*, and FIRS/Presidential Fiscal Committee have clarified this to reduce investor uncertainty.

*How it works in practice for you*
Example:
- Jan: Sell Stock A for ₦2m loss
- Sept: Sell Stock B for ₦5m gain
- Taxable gain = ₦5m - ₦2m = ₦3m
- CGT is then applied on the ₦3m net gain. For individuals, it’s now at your personal income tax rate, not flat 10%. For companies, it’s 30%.

*What you should do*
1. *Keep documentation* of both the loss sale and gain sale
2. *Declare both* in your CGT return so FIRS can net them off
3. *Track the 12-month window* if you’re close to the ₦150m/₦10m exemption.

Bottom line: You can use a documented capital loss to offset capital gains tax later in the same year, or carry it forward 5 years.

Rareoil:
someone should explain
It is already self explanatory. But, let me see what I can do more.

1. Group A mean if a stock is selling for N1,000 and above ( eg Seplat, Okomu, Presco). A single trade of 10,000 units will cause the price to change. Before it was 100,000 units single trade that causes price movement.

2. Group B means if a stock is selling for N999.99 - N500 (eg MTN, Bua Food etc). A single trade by an individual of 50,000 units will cause the price to change. Before it was 100,000 units single trade that causes price movement.

3. Group C mean if a stock is selling for N499.99k and below (eg GTCO, Oando, PZ, Access). A single trade by an individual of 100,000 units will cause the price to change. This had been the standard for all stocks. Majority of stocks belong here.

This classification commence 17th August 2026. It has to do with price movement of equities traded in NGX. I hope this is helpful.

Firstholdco had truly lived up to its name. Though, i don't have a single unit ( but, you can't be everywhere cheesy). This is good news, I am happy when a single share in a sector moves, it rub off on other share in the sector. Hence, i know my Zenith, GTCO, UBA and even my lowly rated Accesscorp will benefit too. grin

There was a time when Firstholdco was virtually tantamount to a ''failure'', at a time they were having some restructuring challenges, share price was stagnating at N3-N4 and dividend was not forthcoming.
The turnaround was something bound to happen at some point but shareholders do not have the patience because we do not know what Management was planning ahead.
Bottom line: no situation is permanent in a company's life; everything is a phase

This tax thing is simple na.
At the end of the year, those who want to pay the tax will collect a form, fill it, and go pay their CGT money to the govt. Simple.

Let anybody come and ask me for anything. and see whether they would get sishi from me.
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by yok: 9:44am On Aug 07
WHAT WILL THE MARKET DO TODAY!!!
From our TARGET TECHNICAL ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE!!! Despite the fact that some weaknesses are showing up, the market seems to likely to be wobbling/fumbling to higher level.

Market authorities/government seems to have gone back to their plan to use the market as a "bragging right"

So, we should continue to see a bullish market, IRAN unreasonableness will likely deliver some oil price gain to Nigeria in the medium timeframe.
