Deji Adeleke: I prayed Osun voters would collect APC money but vote for my brother

Deji Adeleke, the billionaire businessman and father of afrobeats singer Davido, says he prayed that voters would collect money allegedly offered by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the Osun governorship election but back Ademola Adeleke, his younger brother and incumbent governor.

Speaking after Adeleke secured a second term in the August 15 election, Deji said he resorted to prayer after hearing reports of the amount of money allegedly being spent by the APC to influence voters.

He claimed that the APC spent about N60 billion during the election, with some voters allegedly offered as much as N50,000 for their votes.

Ademola, the Accord candidate, defeated Bola Oyebamiji of the APC with 511,067 votes against 444,815.

The result marked the second consecutive governorship defeat for the APC in Osun after Ademola defeated then-incumbent Gboyega Oyetola in the 2022 election.

Oyetola, now minister of marine and blue economy, remained a prominent APC figure in the state and supported the party’s campaign in the 2026 contest.

Deji said rather than attempt to match the alleged spending by the opposition, he turned to God and prayed for his brother’s victory.

“On the day of the election, when I heard about the kind of money they were spending, I went back to my little corner in my room and I knelt down and I prayed to God Almighty and I said, ‘God Almighty, let people collect their money but still vote for Ademola Adeleke,’” he said.

“They spent 60 billion as we heard. Some places they bought votes for as high as 50,000, for one single vote.”

Deji said the Adeleke camp’s victory was not because it had more money or a stronger political structure than the APC, but because of its faith in God.

“The only reason why we defeated Oyetola is not because we’re bigger or spent more money than him,” he said.

Deji said his faith had also shaped his approach to politics and public life, adding that he regularly turns to the Bible during his prayers.

“When I kneel down to pray every day, I have some Bible passages and verses that I read and pray with. And this is part of my testimony. Isaiah 41:10,” he said.

The businessman said his confidence in God had also made him less concerned about political influence or seeking access to powerful people.

“I am not afraid or bothered about anything because my belief in God Almighty is very strong and that is why you don’t see me running after power, people in high places or competing with people to go to visit anyone,” he said.

“I’d rather ask God Almighty to help me in my little corner.”

Under Section 121 of the Electoral Act 2022, it is strictly illegal to directly or indirectly offer money, gifts, or any form of inducement to influence a voter. Both the person buying the vote and the citizen selling their vote commit a crime.

Apparently, while vote buying is a criminal offense, it happens with impunity, and no one is made to pay.

Imagine spending a whooping #60b just for a governorship election? Osun people really dodged a bullet there would have definitely been no governance in osun for the first 2yrs until that #60b was recouped if apc had won.
