This first son thing is a hoarse.

There's a saying in Igbo that he who has the money should bury the father because it wasn't the first son that killed the father.

Most first sons are either poor or irresponsible. The birthright they sold in the Bible is still affecting them today.

In the family, it's the person with the money that shoulders the responsibilities and not any first born.

I am the last born of my family but I look after some of my siblings starting from the eldest one.
You are likely from Ebonyi state.

Speak for yourself and your family. That your eldest brother is stewpid, poor and i-rresponsible doesn't mean that that is what obtains generally. Be Guided and seek for your family's deliverance from the forces holding down your eldest brother.

Sorry Mr. First Son.

I said most first sons not all and if you look around you, you will agree with me.

It's not about what I have done for my siblings. Our second son is the richest in the family so I'm not the richest among my siblings but then the first son is #docile with his responsibilities.
It was the fear of responsibility that make your eldest brother to be one docile

He tried his best but he may realize that he was almost having depression so he decided to redirect his thinking so that he will not just die untimely

Meanwhile success does not mean you have to work have. Those of you in the family that are doing well should not fell you work hard for success, it was the grace of God

Not "Most" please.

First and only son here in a family of 5 siblings. Let's just say, after God the most important thing in my life is my Family in terms of care, and providing for their needs as I can.

You will never understand it better than Igbo. It's cultural thing. even if you no guild the person that guild must still look up to you or help to resume that role. Any their is always a problem when the first son is not fixed.

You sounds a bit boastful with pride to me,I may be wrong but that's the feeling I get with your post, why don't you assist your elder brother to be on his feet's rather than take care of them as you wrote or you prefer it this way.

You really don’t understand why some of these 1st sons act irresponsible. The attack on them from the spiritual affect of you believe in it, the pressure to take care of the whole family, the too much expectations from them accumulate to make them decide/act irresponsible cuz some of them can’t really shoulder them all.
Bro it’s not really easy out there for them oo

Some of this last born, middle born and whatever they are do not know that the first born is like a shield to them.
Whatever generational wahala do most atimes attacks the first born leaving their siblings free and when they makes it in live they felt it's their doing. despite that they can't stomach what the poor and lazy first born as they do call them is passing through.
You are not a shield to anyone, stop hallucinating.

right from the day we were born as first child we assume that responsibility of a family man our mothers being as wives to us and our siblings as our children even when we barely understand our individual self. our fathers more of an uncle to us.
The situation is more worst when the family is not a well to type.

If you know you know if you don't we the first born we know our pains, our sacrifices, discomfort just for others comfort and ...,...... endless.
Only the irresponsible ones Sha might not know all these... but yet they can't run away from some of these first born wahala.

Funny but I have a brother who never cared for our father till he died.
It took the threat and curses of his elderly sister before he could come for his internment...

Not all of us feels entitled or wait for our elderly ones to fend for us..

His responsibility to his father was zero .
So before you comment sometimes,
Think deeply.

Dear firstborns, I admire your courage and selflessness when it comes to taking care of your family. You think of your parents and siblings before yourselves, which to me is a genuine sacrifice.

But I'm begging you all for God's sake, don't kill yourself trying to carry responsibility that doesn't belong to you. Take care of your parents and younger siblings but not to your own detriment.

YOU ARE THE FIRST CHILD; YOU ARE NOT A CRIMINAL SERVING A SENTENCE OR FORCED TO PAY BACK ANYTHING!

Make una dey try enjoy una sweat too.

A firstborn will drop out of school by age 18 to start hustling to support the family. The lastborn is now 25 and he is still calling you for airtime every now and then. But because of your genuine love, you keep sending to them instead of encouraging them to be like you and go and hustle.

I know it's genuine love o, but sometimes ehn, you firstborn don't know how to put yourselves first.

IT IS SOMEONE THAT IS ALIVE THAT CAN BE FIRST BORN O. ALL THE FIRST BORN IN THE HOUSE, PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES TOO. UNA DON TRY!

I hope you people realise that this First Born Burden rubbish is only in Igbo land and among some Southern people abi!

Nobody is responsible for any other persons life here. We have familial loyalty and mutual respect, but we do not expect one person to sacrifice their live for the sake of another.

Talking about thinking deeply, have u talked with ur elder brother to know why he kept away from ur dad? Think deeplyyyy, before u judge ur brother. There r situations he has gone through that u don't know about. So stop being d perfect one , nobody is perfect
Re: First Sons' Burden: How Have You Been Feeling by Kaczynski: 11:24am On Aug 22
Spare me the melodrama. You think you’re the first person in history to carry familial responsibility? Get a grip son.

You’re weak. You complain about sacrifice but do nothing to change your situation. If you’re so burdened, grow a spine and stop whining like a child. The world doesn’t owe you gratitude for existing.
Re: First Sons' Burden: How Have You Been Feeling by ManOfSon: 11:36am On Aug 22
I have a question for you. Why is it "whichever son" when it's time to bury the father, but only the first son when it's time to inherit the father's house? That's why I think most Igbo customary rules/practices are intended to inflict injustice and unfairness. What would be fair is for whichever son that buried the father to also claim whatever entitlement is attached to shouldering such a huge burden. Throughout Igboland, there are many first sons in name only. The one time they show up is to claim their right; to "fight" for their right even. They are never present when responsibility calls.

Nbote:
So becos U are the lastborn in your family and look after your siblings including the Eldest every first born is poor and irresponsible?? That comment reeks of crass ignorance and arrogance. The saying in Igboland U quoted isn't complete. The complete saying says "Whichever son is able should bury his father. The first son didn't kill him". That saying further highlights the pressure and expectations on firstborn sons. In Ngwa land, there is a saying that not until the death of an imbecilic first son, the wisest second son can't head the family. So I don't know how much U think U have done for them to make U make a generalization that sounds and reeks of arrogance.

Nnamdi Azikiwe was born November 16 1904, the VERY FIRST child of his parents.

But it is not a hoax at all. But it is not from responsibilities. I think it could be "spiritual", whatever that means.

I am the first child, very good at school (always first), very responsible, very hard-working, and my parents are wealthy, YET it still affected me. So I can imagine how it must be for first borns from poorer families.

The way I see it, as a first born you must be constantly aware and prayerful and put in extra effort in everything, and don't take anything for granted.
