Manufacturing and processing is the way to go. But Unstable policy, inflation, power costs, etc has been our manufacturing issues. We can't all blame the traders for being reluctant to manufacture. Everyone tries to hedge his/her trading business and family for survival sake by going into other investments or trading other businesses rather than processing after many years of trading. Manufacturing and processing and export is a full days work requiring govt policies. Every now and then there's are banned imported goods to Nigeria and those open for waivers and allowed imported goods to compete with locals by different Govt. How manufacturing wan survive? |

How can you compete with China in manufacturing when you can barely give 1/3 of the population steady power. Hahah, Chinese beat the West to this and na common Africa want show buga. You going to learn and you will learn in a very hard way. |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by chimex38: 8:36am On Sep 18 |
RodgersAkpafu:The context of the discuss was that the Chinese don't import from Nigeria. And I said indirectly that they do. It's just that we don't manufacture or export enough. When they introduced the 0% tariff, our export to China increased by 80%. Nobody is saying compete with Chinese on same commodity products, of course it's a fool errand. But compete a bit with exporting processed raw material products with varieties rather than exporting the raw materials itself which we mostly do. Also, we should also just weaponize subsidies for our local businesses. Grant them rental relief, lower taxes, etc. |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by chimex38: 8:38am On Sep 18 |
I don't like the chinese invasion of our retail space, it will spiral to other areas. Indirectly taking away our own small sovereigncy space wey we dey manage for the retail side after we've reluctantly surrendered our manufacturing and construction space to them. But they've done nothing wrong IMO. they are taking advantage of our situation we ourselves created. Unfortunately, we're taking too long, far too long to stabilize the economy and citizens want cheaper things to cushion the effect of hardship in other areas. unfortunately at our future detriment. |

GTI Research has put Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals’ (DPRP) probability-weighted fair value at approximately N493 per share, below the N525 offer price at which the company is currently selling shares in Africa’s largest-ever public share sale. This is according to a 22-page valuation report by GTI Research analysts led by Mr. Abiodun Ogunniyi, which was published on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 and obtained by Nairametrics. |

kalu61:So because you can't compete now means you should be making 100% n above margins on Nigerians. So in your assessment there is never a time Nigeria was favorable for manufacturing in the last 40years.. The problem is lazy people will always find reason to justify there lack of foresight and laziness. No be just last year shear butter processing company spring up in niger state, what did government do? They ban the exportation of the raw materials. So you can't use your association to lobby government for same after establishing processing plants? But you can use the same association to exploit Nigerian and for political moves. Una never ready, Chinese have come here to stay, buckle up or go home.let the poor breath. |

The end of greediness have come here to stay, may be states that are not ok with Chinese can flush them out from there state but in South west, we love competition. You can go to your state and protest against the Chinese to enjoy monopoly and continue to fry them with high margins. But here, we would never allow that. |

kalu61:Which one is 1/3 of the population, that is overtly exaggerating out power generating and transmission capabilities. Then ofcourse there is the cost of power in Nigeria when one gets stable power supply. |

SonofElElyonRet:DR IPO should be for the long term and the focus should be on 1.4m barrels. These current analyses are mostly based on 700K barrels. If there is oversubscription and monies are returned (most likely), there will be another bullish run when the shares are listed on the secondary market |

I have seen this argument that Chinese involvement in Nigeria’s retail market is somehow a deliberate plot to frustrate Igbo traders, and this kind of thinking perfectly explains one of our biggest problems. Lack of critical thinking and the absence of foresight and future thinking in how we do things. So everything becomes a conspiracy. Everything becomes ethnic persecution. Instead of studying the competition, identifying what they are doing better and building a response, we WAIL. China's competitive advantage isn't simply cheaper goods. It is the SYSTEM behind the goods. Not even America tries to compete, it partners!! China owns every rung in their systen end to end. There is no part that requires you. Manufacturing. Industrial clusters. Supplier networks. Logistics. Financing. Warehousing. Distribution. Technology. Scale. They don't just participate at the final point of sale. They have built capacity across the entire value chain. Meanwhile, too much of Nigerian commerce remains trapped in trader mentality of import, distribute, sell, profit. That can create extremely wealthy individuals, but it doesn't necessarily create an industrial ecosystem capable of competing when the people manufacturing what you sell decide they no longer need you as the middleman. Buying and selling is a part of business but it is NOT the business. The system is! And that is where Nigerians should be looking inward and catching up to system thinking! The time many of our business elites should have been reinvesting billions into end-to-end systems, industrial capacity and institutions that would survive generations, they were celebrating individual wealth as the ultimate achievement. “Money na water.” Wonderful. But where are the systems? You couldn't turn Ariaria into the world-class manufacturing and commercial hub its entrepreneurial energy deserves. You couldn't transform Onitsha Main Market into a globally competitive trading ecosystem that generations could inherit and expand. You couldn't turn Alaba and Balogun market into manufacturing hubs. Yet China is your biggest problem? We have produced billionaires, governors, massive importers and distributors. The question is what was built from that success. If you made billions distributing products manufactured elsewhere, where was the transition from distribution to production? Where were the factories, supplier networks, logistics infrastructure and industrial ecosystems? Individual wealth cannot protect you from structural competition and the eventual consequences. This is the hard lesson! So instead of immediately reaching for “they are targeting Igbos,” ask a much more useful question: What did they build that Nigerian "business" men failed to build? Because competitors do not become less competitive because you complain about them. And if every economic challenge becomes an ethnic conspiracy, you never have to confront the uncomfortable possibility that nobody needed to plot against you. They built a better system while you were celebrating individual success. And no, I will not argue with your feelings! I debate positions! If you understood systems as a "business" person , it would show in your thinking! By Chioma Amaryllis Ahaghotu |

crownprince2017:Based on the context of discuss, Then the guy I quoted should not blame the Chinese for weaponizing subsidies for their citizens back in China against foreign traders; If Nigeria FG and it's traders can't abide by rules and do the same. We have not got our acts together here in Nigeria. Why blame Chinese for taking advantage of our loopholes? |

As seen on the internet The Chinese must not leave Nigeria. The Chinese must stay in Nigeria and more Chinese should come and do business in Nigeria and crash prices of goods especially in Lagos as these middlemen are extortionists . Once more chinese arrive , they should build affordable housing for everyone especially in Lagos and Abuja and crash the cost of rent for everyone . No two years rent in advance, no agency and legal fee ,let the landlord renting the house pay his agent and lawyer as that is how it should be . When we have enough Chinese in Nigeria, do you know what else they should do? They should fix all the roads in Nigeria and collect toll. They should give us pipe borne water and charge pure water price , They should fix our electricity problem and construct high speed trains and charge fees until they recoup their investment . They should take over Nigerian agriculture and crash food prices . They should take over all the non functioning refineries and refine oil locally and crash fuel pump retail prices . This is the best part , firing squad if found to be corrupt in any form or selling drugs just as they handle corruption and drug trafficking in China. Do you really want the Chinese in Nigeria to go? © Francis Van
