All of you saying with our large arable land we could not make the list, the question now is how many acres of the vast arable land are you cultivating? who do you want to cultivate it, even the jobless ones arguing over atiku, obi and tinubu all day, don't have one plot of plantain farm to their name.

Would you want to set up a mechanized farm yourself, son?

Plus, saying that Nigeria cannot do something or isn't doing something is not an excuse, and it does not mean that I believe the government is suddenly wonderful and great...infact one can even take my comment as a subtle attack on government not creating the enabling enviornment for such to be done.

You should learn to stop calling people who think differently from you government supporters. It shows you as having one way of thinking...a rigidity in thinking so to speak.
I'm not rigid in thinking
You can see that I gave credit to the Buhari administration for NiRSAL in my previous post.

In my opinion I feel the country is too big to continue to totally rely on subsistence agric.

You did assume I was a government supporter, without proof, and you assumed my comment was an excuse, and you somehow think that government has magical powers to compel Nigerians to invest in mechanized agriculture.

When you do that, it shows rigidity in thinking.

LOL, doesn't prove what you want it to prove tho. (For the record, NIRSAL was a good idea)

Precisely my point, but most nigerians don't want to take the plunge. Bad governance of apc, yes, but it was the same story and has been for decades.

Nigeria is the worlds number one producer of beans, cassava, yam, cocoa beans, sesame seeds, ginger, millet, signum and garri.

You’re welcome

Just good at noise making, especially Nigeria.

Never seen people as loud as Nigerians.

Go to social media, you won't believe these people are from the poverty capital of the world.

Always making noise!
Since you are not a farmer, you are part of Nigeria problems

Most African countries do subsitence farming. That's enough to feed some of the population, but not enough to feed all the population and leave surplus for exports.

If we want to be a world leader in food production, we got to have more people investing in large scale mechanized farming. That would take us to the top, but leave many small scale subsitence farmers out of work...
no body will be left out if the country can build large storage system across the farming states its just about priority no let anybody whine you

We need better storage as you have very rightly said, and transport even, but the problem is, subsistence farming is not producing enough for Nigeria to begin with, talk-less before we talk of storage and transport

Civilized peoples that can’t feed themselves 😂

Before colonization, our ancestors never imported foods but had enough to feed…. But thank god for colonization, we are now civilized

Yeah . If you look at first world countries there are aspect of their economy that is not always left at the hands of few private investor, transport sector, power / energy sector, edocational sector, health, marinetime , agricultural and defence sector. If any government can effectively manage and grow the those sectors will a first world country. In Nigeria today, transport sector is has a huge role in our inflation rate

Malaysia and Indonesia have a climate and far more land where palm oil can be grown year round. Nigeria can only grow palm oil in the south, and the south is densley populated..which limits available land for palm oil cropping.

The above comment is a response to my previous comment

Note that the lad just abuses me, but offers no proof as to why I am wrong, and he is right.

It shows that he actually does not have proof, he just wants to prove that he is superior to me.

Such people are not worth engaging with at all at all

I still stand by my post, and will add that Malaysia has plantations, and some form of mechanized farming, which Nigeria doesn't have.

P.S : He better go and learn to be more polite to people. I'm blocking him too for his own good.
I've come across comments saying that Nigeria was the largest exporter of palm oil in the world before Malaysia took over .
Please from your wealth of knowledge can you confirm

It was, then civil war, plus the domination of crude oil from the 1970's (which also ended our dominance in a lot of other agro products), plus the 1970's when agric prices went down internationally , plus the factors i've already listed ended that dominance.

Also, Malaysia is a country whose climate is tropical all over. Compared to Nigeria, where the only parts of the country growing palm oil are restricted to the South (for Nigeria to be like Malaysia, climate wise, it means that palm oil can be grown all over nigeria, even in places like Kano and Borno!)

USA has a lot of farming that is heavily mechanized, even dairy farming for example is mechnanized from how the milk is collected to how it is processed. And farming is dominated by large corporations there.

The result however, is that a lot of farming towns have a lot of unemployed and underemployed people...because machines are taking away the farm jobs that would have needed many hands to farm on.

It's like you seem to think that stating facts is excusing things.

Agriculture is risky business. Most nigerian banks don't lend to people who have business ideas re agriculture, even if the collateral is okay. Add the fact that most people prefer to import , rather than to produce in nigeria, and you get why your country is not a major food producer.

And for that to happen, that means building very large farms that can produce all year round, which has the effect of kicking out a lot of subsitence farmers from their jobs, AND Being energy heavy.

I don't know when telling the truth meant excuses.

If you mean that government should do it, it has been tried in the past, and it failed. Government business is nobody's business.

Malaysia for instance, took the seedlings they used in their plantation in Nigeria, I think, in the 70s. Guess what? They are now ahead of us in palm oil production whether you'd like to admit it or not. As a result, they are now one of the largest producers of beauty products on the globe.

Is the United State that big? Considering they don't have lots of farms, mostly single large farms, how are they able to produce that much?

Funny.
Why would you say machines took away jobs?

Were they supposed to pay heavily for manpower when machines can do it more cheaply and efficiently?
What about Nigeria, which doesn't use any mechanized farming? Do their youths now have surplus jobs

grin grin grin

You are fond of giving excuses on behalf of Nigeria !

What stops Nigeria from mechanizing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bubu trying to boolster agric with NIRSAL ✅ was an okay move.
But giving huge funds to yam and goat ❌❌❌ without any form of supervision was what destroyed the program
All those people building hotels and gas filling stations everywhere can instead divert those funds into agriculture. The countries in the top chart are mostly privately owned.
Before you mention insecurity, just know that Nigeria did not start existing in 2009. We abandoned what was working in the 60s for crude oil in the 70s, so here we are? We can't even grow our own food any longer.

Don't mind them. And none of them will invest in agriculture if you give them the money right now. They'd rather go build a guest house
Re: The Countries Dominating Global Food Production (Photos) by NaijaphiliaBlog:
Dear Nairalanders,

don't let any "skewed" presentations give you an inferiority complex.

Nigeria is a global powerhouse in food production!

Here are the facts (you can easily go and verify):

A. NIGERIA’S GLOBAL FOOD MARKET DOMINANCE

• Cassava: Nigeria is by far the largest producer of cassava, accounting for more than 20% the world's entire output.

• Cowpea (Beans): We are the largest producer of cowpeas in the world, with more than 40% of global output.

• Kolanuts: Nigeria produces more than 50% of the world's total kolanut supply.

• Shea nuts: We are the world’s leading producer of shea nuts and shea butter.

• Yam: Nigeria is the world's largest producer of yam, contributing over 70% total global supply.

B. NIGERIA’S OTHER HIGH VOLUME PRODUCTS

Nigeria is also among the world's top producers for these food and cash commodities:

• Cocoa Beans: We are the 4th largest producer globally.

• Groundnuts (Peanuts): Nigeria is No 1 in Africa and globally 3rd behind China and India.

• Palm Oil: Ranks among the top 5 global producers.

• Sesame Seeds: We are Africa's largest sesame seed producer and 4th globally.

So, just think about it: Is there any real justification for Nigeria not being listed in the original article?
