opsydazy: @robonski15, your post is a great eye opener for intending catfish farmers like me. Am considering using the plastic and tarpaulin vats as my pond. What is the advantages or otherwise to the concrete ponds. Also, for a fres farmer like me, how much should I be planning to invest in starting from the scratch.

omode2: This is beyond a pond its either a lake or a dam have seen such at d former IG's farm and at ogojo. I dont think they use concentrate feed much may b they use tilapia fries or d big fishes cannibalise d small ones because, those lakes are massive.

excelsiorfarm: we are already draining our dam, because of d season our expectatn is that in 3-4 weeks our dam should have drain,though will be using dragnet to harvest our fishes, tilapia is easily taken,but when our dam is low, we be able to harvest our catfish, u need tilapia, we have in tonnage , we are all learning

excelsiorfarm: the fishes are fed with crack eggs, processed poultry birds(loss from poultry) & we have tonnes of tilapia in our dam, also they feed on fishes that didn't develop(runts), i think d iG farm ain't functioning again, though i learnt a farm has about 5-7 units of this dam( i will be taken to that farm soon,but not my office, just to rub mind)

robonski15: You are very correct!!! The third week is what I call the CAREFUL week..this is the time most hatchers dread the most.. What I do at the third week is dat I carefully clean the ponds, change the water then I add chloraphenical and tetracyclin with a bit of salt.. U have to be very careful when applying the salt..

I leave them till the next day without feeding..ur water must be clean at all times especially dis period.. Then the next day u start feeding them minimally.. And most importantly "PRAY"
