For me I see no problems with Nigerians who want to move abroad. When your country cannot even provide its citizens with the most BASIC needs of life what the hell is the point of staying in the country and suffering all in the name of "patriotism"? Nigeria is supposed to be one of Africa's richest countries yet we cannot give our citizens constant electric power supply? How on earth does that work? I understand that I am speaking from the position of a middle class Nigerian but the story remains the same. It's not possible to live a stress free life in Nigeria if you do not AT LEAST have middle class money. Being a working class Nigerian living in Nigeria is a death sentence. WHY? One thing I like about most Nigerians is that we do not ask for much. ALL most of us want is to live a nice life with all the basic amenities provided CONSTANTLY and a steady source of income for ourselves and our families. Nigeria cannot even provide that. Some people leave the country because they are frustrated with just the electric power supply situation. I lived in Nigeria for 16 years and not ONCE did we actually have constant power supply. Yet we rake in all kinds of cash from not only oil exports but also other agricultural exports. WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING? Then we get into our deeply useless education system. Not ONE Nigerian University in the top 1,000 schools in the world and we're supposed to be the giants of Africa? How does that work? Added to this is deeply ingrained system of CORRUPTION in the country. Starting from the idiots in positions of power right down to the common man. Literally everybody is crooked in Nigeria these days. It is literally impossible to have lived in Nigeria for more than two years without having to pay off someone to get something done. Why must that be the case? Why can't due process be followed? Nigeria is a like a really bad concoction. Extremely hot and humid weather that only gets worse with generator fumes every night even though we're supposed to have one of the world's largest oil reserves THEN we add on top of that the most corrupt politicians on planet earth who will literally kill and sacrifice to ensure that their position in power is maintained for as long as possible THEN finally we add, a largely apathetic population that cannot see what its government is OPENLY doing to it. After reading that, it is not difficult at all to see why people cannot stay again. There is literally NO aspect of life in Nigeria that has not been touched yet by corruption and frustration. It's a deadly mix and if people have the chance the get the hell out legally, they need to grab that chance with two hands. At least get yourself a proper education somewhere else and then return to Nigeria if you really love it so much and believe it will change. As far as i'm concerned, I'm not entirely sure I see where this so called "change" will start from. We're about to go the polls for ANOTHER election that has a former military general who is not content with the money he chopped in 1985 and is trying to return to get some more, a former vice president part of an immensely CORRUPT system and an equally CORRUPT and daft political figurehead who has already shown he cannot run this country properly as the leading potential candidates and all of us are going to take ourselves to the polls next year and decide between the SAME people who have been ruling and DUPING us in some capacity for more than 20 years. Like a stupid f****** dog that goes back to its vomit every single time. Absolutely disgusting. They no longer even hide it like they used to. They OPENLY steal money from our pockets every day and continue to get away with it. Only VIOLENT resistance can change Nigeria. Our politicians understand no other BUT violence. The citizens are the only ones who can change Nigeria. Either you rise up and demand PROPER and lasting reforms or you continue to get duped. I watched the Arab Spring revolutions and though to myself if only these protesters can come to Nigeria and see the situation of the citizens, maybe they might appreciate their situation a bit more. If ANY country needed a revolution the most, it is NIGERIA. RANT OVER. |

Look at them RANTING here when in real life they can't even obey simple traffic rules here in Nigeria. If you think that travelling abroad with absolutely no end game on how to succeed then you've just wasted your time and energy chasing a whirlwind. If you guys thinks that those edifices, high rise building and glories of these nations were built by doing some abracadabra then you're on a long thing. The abroad that the average backward minded Nigerian wants to travel to was built on the sweat and blood of a people that persevered, suffered, and died for a better tomorrow that they never enjoyed. But again ,the lazy, gullible Nigerian youth with the 'get rich or die trying mentality' will always take the risk and probably end up worse. For those that their parents had them in abroad, schooled in abroad, you can do a lot to make changes by bringing back your expertise and technical know-how but again we have seen people that came back from abroad ,held an exalted position only to become more corrupt and inept than the ones at home. Again you can hate it or you leave ;if you can't carve out a niche for yourself here in Nigeria with this population that requires services ,then forget because you're most likely to end up in jail in abroad. There is no free lunch for illegals and no automatic good life for the legal migrants as well, get that into your thick heads before braving the odds. #PEACE ![]() |

I hate it when people speak like local champions ! We won't have a black American president now if Obama or his parents had confined him in Kenya or if he had decided to relocate to Kenya. We Africans live and die in a small locality ! We never see beyond our nose that's why the continent is still backward ! We don't explore beyond our territory! The greatest discoveries were made by travelers ! Elon Musk left South Africa for the US and today he is one of the youngest Billionaires - Tesla cars and SpaceX, the guys that sold WhatsApp were immigrants and so much more! You claim to be a professional but you are just one bloody local champion - a one-eye king in the land of the blind ! I won't mince or mise words when I say Nigeria is light years behind their western counterpart in everything ! Should we promote mediocrity in the name of patriotism ? Your educational system is backward, your financial system is backward, your governing system is backward and corrupt ! So what the heck are you talking about? Your definition of progress is when a whole state voted in a criminal as state governor, influenced by bags of rice? Its only lower animals that thrive on survival instinct ! A Nigeria is now the VC of University of Illinois, I wonder if he had been in Nigeria he would be an HOD in one unknown university because VC position is a political appointment in his fatherland ! Break free of this your fatherland mentality because the world is bigger than Nigeria ! When you die and meet God, let's be able to tell Him " I lived in the "WORLD" as He had destined you and not as a local champion in your little village ! |

I have deliberately avoided this thread because i'm sick and tired of the same line of arguement over and over. Nigerians stuck in de diaspora would continue to justify their stay in US, Uk and Europe by castigating, insulting, degrading and rubbishing Nigeria as a country. No single one of them will tell us their PERSONAL reason for living Nigeria for good. It's always the same chorus of " Nigeria is a shithole, Nothing works, No power, no roads ..bla bla bla". They are mostly not true to themselves. They hide behind cliches. I have a question for all Diaspora Nigerians. Give an honest especially to yourself. Do not answer to legitimize your stay in the diaspora or for the sake of winning an arguement. I'm not interested in that. Answer from the deepest of your soul. Here is the question. IF YOU SHOULD WIN A LOTTERY JACKPOT OF $25M IN THE US, UK OR EUROPE, WOULD YOU STILL CHOOSE TO LIVE THERE OR MAKE MOVES TO RELOCATE TO NIGERIA. Honest answers please. |

A lot Africans ESPECIALLY NIGERIANS never want to get out of their comfort zone. Apparently they are comfortable living in a country where CRIMINALS are elected with ease, half the population cannot even find 3 square meals. They'd rather suffer in Nigeria than try to explore the world and come back. LOL If you leave Nigeria to better educate yourself, you are a traitor. That is their mentality. The idiotic politicians that they are electing have their children go abroad and come back exploit the population by giving them bags of rice for a vote. What a farce. |

For me, I do not share the sentiment of going back to Nigeria simply because I was born there. I have a project I am working on now and if such an amount can comes my way, my project kicks off and it has nothing to do with Nigeria. And again, if my future plans changes and it is required for me to live temporarily or permanent in Nigeria, then I will of course. In other words, it is not a geographically thing for me (a definiton of home), it is pretty much anywhere I find peace and hope. |

well, let them all run away. It only gives more space for the rest of us that are dogged and intuitive to share the competition with foreigners who are trooping in daily to invest. The good news is that the foreigners will not be able to match our local knowledge. I'm sure that Dangote guy will be thanking his star that he did not remain outside the walls of Nigeria doing one stupid thing or another, early in his life. Today, he sits in the same table with Bill Gates. I am currently observing my youth service in Akwa Ibom state, where I see opportunities as plentiful as sand. Yet, alot of the people here, according to statistics, have migrated to greener pastures. There is a reflection being shared on Whatsapp recently, which read: Funny Nigerians 1) When they loot money, they keep it in Switzerland. 2) When sick, they go to Germany. 3) When investing, they go to America. 4) When buying Mansions, they visit London. 5) When shopping they go to Dubai. 6)When on holidays, they visit paris or Bahamas. 7) When educating their children, they select Europe. When praying, they go to Saudi Arabia or Jerusalem.9) BUT,when they DIE, they all want to be BURIED in NIGERIA. Abeg help me ask them, NIGERIA NA CEMETERY? |

dannysoya: in my opinion violence wont change anything even if they would manage to overthrow the government in lass than 3 years the situation would be worse than now what main question ist: what is needed to run a good working democracy? in a democracy the people should control their leaders but if the people dont know how to feed their familiy tomorrow they wont care for politics a democracy needs people who are willing to invest money for a free investigativ press und to invest time to deal with te polictical problems of the country... a poor man wont do that in every country in the world big complays are trying to influnce the political leaders to exploit the people but its the job of a counrty to defend themselfs against those companys if it gets public a german, swedish or uk politican took money from a company, his political charrer would be over, he wouldnt even be allowed to clean the toilet of the parlament and there are a lot a journalists around who are doing everything to expose things like that a democracy has to defend themselfs otherwise they will be exploted by corrupt leaders influenced by companys and there lobbyists nigeria has a long way to go to become that kind of democracy but violence cant fix it ps sry for bad english ![]() |

I was applying for my student visa the other day and was reading stories of the stress Nigerians have to go through just to get a student visa. The CORRUPTION in our country has made our passport absolutely worthless. Everywhere you go with a green passport you get second looks, they take you aside to search you specially. When you get to the border of international airports they ask you more questions than most cuz they assume every Nigerian is out to swindle people. Nigeria is decaying every day and we still have people telling us to accept everything because of patriotism. People are going out to learn and come back and try to improve the country's image and they are called traitors. Backward thinking is why our country is in the shitter right now. Go out and see success stories all over the world and try and take some of what they have done and try to apply it here instead of abusing criticizing those who are trying to go abroad to learn a thing or two and hopefully one day come back and apply it here. All that patriotism shit is worn off for me. I will go wherever opportunity takes me. If the opportunity is in Nigeria, i'll go there too. If the opportunity is else where, i'm moving. The world is much smaller these days. Better move with the times or be left behind. |

The whole point of my question is; what would make all those folks that describe Nigeria as a " Shithole " want to return and live in Nigeria NOW. Emphasis is on NOW, Today. |

Afterall, every sheep in the west is relishing the green, nutritious grasses! My brother , I really do not fault your reasoning..I worked in MTN for years which is our definition of successful career before I moved to the US and I had a mindset like yours. I would argue endlessly about how Nigeria is the best place to be and all those fatherland sentiments. You know the first thing I discovered ? Most things I thought was normal way of living I discovered it actually abnormal ! The problem with most of us in Nigeria is that we have lived in a deprived society for so long that nature has started to alter our DNA to fit into that environment. Its nature's way of evolution and natural selection !!! Even new born babies now are born with survival instinct in a harsh economy. I beg you, do not allow your children to go through what you went through, let them have a better life, let them live in a society where hard work and diligence are rewarded, a society where they can be at par with their counterparts in the rest of the world. You and your fathers before you have served the lords of Nigerian politics, don't allow your children to serve their children again! Go through the presidential candidates of all parties in Nigeria and you don't need a soothsayer to tell you what the next 4 years will be like ! Your destiny is in your hands so act wisely! |

Sanchez01: @the bolded, can you authoritatively state that they are the only achievers/celebrities and epitome of talents in this country? The answer certainly answers yours.I saw a picture of a Newspaper headline of 1985 which reads "End to power blackout by 1986" , - 29 years later it's worse ! How old is UAE ? Einstein said I paraphrased - Insanity is when we do things same way and expect a different result! Couple of weeks ago we witnessed Ekiti people proudly vote in a known criminal as Governor, fast forward few days later chaos reigns ! Do we blame God? If you don't know; power blackout is not normal, it takes a natural disaster to replicate that scenario in some of these countries that don't have half of the resources we are blessed with. Don't fail your next coming generation with your kind of thinking, leave them a legacy so that they will pray for you when you grow old and you are in your grave ! |

Candour: I doubt the 'properties' mentioned in the OP are homes or lands. They could simply have been electronic gadgets, household furniture etc. Remember he said the traveller was his baby sister's friend? And since OP himself isn't an old man from his narratives, its clear the guy in question must be a young struggling Nigerian who knew he had nothing to present at the embassy hence opted for the 'cheaper' but suicidal route. He doesn't paint the picture of a comfortable Nigerian at all.Well, you will agree that those are not "properties" in the real sense of the word and the impression OP was giving was that the sold "properties" were valuables like Homes, Stocks, Bonds, businesses etc. |

You are probably under-employed here, whatever caused it for you here will still do same over there.Europe is getting tougher, but its still better pass naija. I feel North America is more stable. Either way your cousins seem like failures, incompetent or both. Whatever their irrational reason was to come to naija and work, nobody is buying because its better. Stop insulting our intelligence. Now to address the stereotypical "Washing dishes" again. In Canada for example, there are minimal but good paying jobs where you need little to no education to do. Driving public transit for example starts you at a minimum of 65k to 100k dollars per year. With good benefits and a government pension. All you need is a drivers license and be over 18. Police officers here start at 80k and reach 100k annually within 3 years. Again all you have to be is over 18 and have a high school education with no criminal conviction. An ordinary mail man here pulls in 60k a year or more with overtime. So if you're in naija and have finished secondary school, the least you can do here is get these minimal jobs which pays well. If you come here when you're young and have higher ambition, the sky is the limit. Nobody "washes dishes" here. You'd have to be an idiot to come here and start washing dishes. |

maternal: Europe is getting tougher, but its still better pass naija. You'd have to be an idiot to come here and start washing dishes.Imagine! Chai! Nah hin Jonathan dey wait make I come vote for am come Valentine's day! Hin papa! I dey go Canada |
