Defensive issues for van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed he has issues in defence ahead of Crystal Palace's visit on Saturday.

Although Marcos Rojo does not require surgery on the shoulder problem that forced him off in the Manchester derby last weekend, he obviously misses the clash against Neil Warnock's side with Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones also on the sidelines.

"Marcos dislocated his shoulder but did it in a positive way," explained the boss. "We don't need to operate on him. It's a relief but maybe, with this injury, it is very difficult to prevent it from happening again. That is the problem.

"He saw a specialist yesterday evening who said the conservative way to heal it is best. For him, it was positive. Always with these injuries, I cannot change that. The human body has been made by God - not by me. Conservatively, it can be less than six weeks. If we have to operate, 12 weeks."

The absentees ensure there will be more changes to the manager's XI with Michael Carrick, Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett and Tom Thorpe among the contenders to play at the heart of the back four.

"When I want to select the same line-up, I cannot," added van Gaal. "It's the same every week. It is like it is and I don't want to complain or cry because I have great belief in the players, myself and my staff. Also the supporters who are supporting us despite the results.

"Smalling is suspended. Evans and Jones are still injured. So I have to solve a problem but I don't want to say who is playing yet."

On-loan striker Radamel Falcao is another to miss the visit of the Eagles due to his calf injury, with the manager confirming he has not recovered in time.

Louis van Gaal led the Manchester
United first-team squad and celebrity guests as the 15th annual United for UNICEF Gala Dinner raised a record £210,000 for the world’s leading children’s organisation.
The black-tie evening is a highlight
on the clubs social calendar and is
attended by the manager and his
staff, along with the players and their partners.
Van Gaal enjoyed his first UNICEF Gala dinner and said,”It does not surprise me that Manchester United is part of such a significant charity partnership and one that has impacted on the lives of so many children throughout the world. Our work with UNICEF is something this club can be very proud of and I was honoured to join the players at tonight’s 15-year anniversary event.

” Reds captain Wayne Rooney
added,”Any player who signs for this club soon realises how important UNICEF is to Manchester United. I’ve been attending the gala dinner for ten years now and it’s always a great evening that raises a lot of money for United for UNICEF. “Like myself, most of the players here tonight have young families so it’s very moving to learn about the
UNICEF project in Vietnam and the
awful circumstances so many
children have to face. I’m just glad we could help tonight and am
grateful to all the supporters who
joined us to make it such a special
event.” The unique relationship United and UNICEF share has transformed the lives of millions of children around the world, giving us one more reason to take pride in the club we support

“Louis van Gaal talks about progress. I expected United to have a better record by this stage of the season,” Scholes wrote in his column for The Independent.

“It is difficult to figure out what Van Gaal is thinking during games. His demeanour doesn’t change throughout. He looks a bit subdued.

“Certainly, he appears very different to the man you saw on the touchline at the World Cup.”

"If they do what we agreed in training, we will win" -Van Gaal
Manyoo go on to lose the 1st game of the season...to Swansea...at Old Trafford

"When we survive the first three months, it will be the same as for me as it was at Bayern Munich. At Bayern, after the first three months, we were sixth or seventh and we were third in our Champions League group" -Van Gaal
After 3 months, Manyoo are in tenth place in the league....level on points with West Brom

"We are in a process and that process shall take more than one year,It shall take three years, I hope, because that is always dependable from a lot of aspects, but I think it shall be and we shall make it happen that we shall win a lot of matches in a row" -Van Gaal

You guys should better prepare for relegation.

"Louis van Gaal talks about progress. Well, I expected Manchester United to have a better record by this stage of the season,

'Under David Moyes last term my old club had 17 points from their first 10 games. This time, having spent £150million in the summer, they have 13 points from the same number.

'And the problem in defence should have been addressed in the summer. It was not as if Van Gaal was unaware that Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans were susceptible to injuries. The great defenders - Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic - were injured very rarely in their prime. You need that reliability and consistency at centre-back.

'It concerns me that expectation levels have slipped so far that many supporters I know felt relieved at snatching a late draw with Chelsea and losing narrowly to City."
-Paul Scholes.

United have won just three of their 11 matches this season, and only two clubs (Real Madrid and Manchester City) have ever spent more in a single transfer window than United did this summer. The average current league position of United's league opponents is 10.7. Aston Villa, the new crisis club, are three points behind them having faced opposition with an average current league position of 8.0
There is also an odd sense of self-created pluckiness to United, alien under Alex Ferguson. 'We're playing well, so don't worry' seems to be the message, as if playing well is enough. Performances are secondary to results, and the whole 'hard luck, chaps' idea is baffling. This is Manchester effing United. United don't get lucky, they get better.

That air of assumed negativity was epitomised in a recent quote from Chris Smalling. "How we played against the league leaders showed that we can go to any team and cause problems," was Smalling's message. West Brom aim to cause problems - United should only be aiming to win.

Van Gaal explains dugout position

Louis van Gaal has revealed the reason why he has rarely
entered the touchline technical
area during his 11 matches as
Manchester United manager.
The Dutchman's tendency to
remain seated in the dugout has
been noted by Reds supporters,
particularly when he made his
first appearance on the touchline
following Chris Smalling's dismissal in last Sunday's derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium. Speaking to MUTV at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, van Gaal explained why he is always
keen to take a more considered
view of games from the dugout.
"I am always on the bench
because my philosophy is that we
have to prepare our players to
play the match and when you are
shouting on the sideline, there is
nobody you can contact during the game - especially when we
are home at Old Trafford,” the
boss said, referring to noise levels
inside the ground. “But at that time when I was at the sideline [against City], it was because of the red card for Chris Smalling and I had to readjust our system. That is why I was there, but normally I am never there.”

I made this comment on August 28th:

all our signings wil be meaningles if we dont get a solid defender and a holding midfielder! We can get all the di maria's, bring back cr7 and buy falcao, it wil stil be the same result. We should have gone home with a 1 - 0 win at stadium of light last week, but we conceded a cheap goal from set-piece and had to settle for a draw.
Hopefully, the mgt is already aware of this and is working towards it. If we cant get the big names, we can get vlaar from villa, tempt newcastle for tiote or sidwel from wherever he is

Same thing scholes is implicating! Moyes was even more passionate, didn't enjoy much financial back-up and fans+players loyal support. We are all telling ourselves lies if we think this team has made progress from last season's set-up. Why is LVG whining about our defense? While unpaid loyalist like us saw the handwriting on the well. Relying on overpaid and overhyped british mediocres. How we rely on peeps like Mcnair to man our defense still beats me. He did well against Everton; but couldn't stay close to Aguero as he slotted in the win last week; who are we fooling? When did we become Stoke city that celebrates a home draw against chelsea? Thank goodness Carrick is back. January is coming, let's keep fantasizing about Cr7, Ibrahimovic, Sango and Amadioha. Let's not put the defense on order.

and this is exactly why our form has been choppy. while other top clubs have established a constant back four, we have always changed ours due to injuries, suspensions & what not....

this is why it's hard to judge van gaal....the injuries are a big disadvantage to him. on the upside, the football has been better....very soon, the results would follow suit. we are playing very well - i am incredibly satisfied.

however, the club should sell jones & evans. he's too young to be copping 20 injuries per season. if his youth is this way, then what would he be when he gets to his late twenties?

I don't know why we are reading lamentations here, is it cuz these shitfucks from the sewage end are thinking they are now professors of ideology & came in unison to vomit in this place?

please pay those inbred swine no mind, LvG is handling his business & its only a matter of time. the British core @ the back continues letting the club down, & its difficult to express our attacking prowess fully for now. I don't blame LvG for giving them a chance cuz they are all young & British lads, @ least when large scale changes are made to the rear guard, the British media won't find much of a base to anchor their criticisms.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by SailorXY: 9:39pm On Nov 07, 2014
Manchester United have used a staggering 37 different players this season in all competitions - more than any other side in the Premier League. With Louis van Gaal having overseen the club's worst start to a season in 28 years, the figure is likely to stand out as a possible cause of United's troubles. Van Gaal has been beset by injury problems, with Michael Carrick making his first appearance of the season in the derby defeat to Manchester City and becoming the 37th player to feature under David Moyes' successor.

Other high-profile omissions this season have been Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Ander Herrera whilst the defence has been persistently depleted. That Van Gaal oversaw the arrival of numerous players after the start of the season, including Marcos Rojo, Falcao and Blind has also added to the figure. Yet it points to uncertainty over team selection, with little clue as to if or how the attacking threats of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Falcao, Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria can be accommodated into the same side when all available. The figure includes all competitions, but with no European football, the FA Cup yet to start and a shock defeat to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup, that amounts to one extra game in addition to their 10 Premier League matches.

In contrast, Southampton who currently sit proudly in second, have used just 18 different players under Ronald Koeman. League leaders Chelsea have used 23. The next highest number of players used by a Premier League team this term is Crystal Palace who sit a place above the relegation zone. Meanwhile Tottenham, who have played 18 games (six more than United), have used just 25.

As an indication of the pitfalls of using many players, last season Fulham who were relegated in 19th place used more than any other side in the Premier League.

Robin van Persie said he was surprised by Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United and is not satisfied with his performances under Louis van Gaal.

In September, Van Persie’s former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand stated Ferguson’s decision to retire after 27 years at Old Trafford “took the wind out of everyone’s sails” but “the person it hit more than anyone was Robin”.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant on Friday, Van Persie said he had been shocked by the departure of the man who persuaded him to leave Arsenal in August 2012.

“Rio is a great guy. He talks a lot but there is some truth in that,” he said. “My decision to come to Manchester was partly because of the presence of Ferguson, or excuse me, Sir Alex. And he told me he’d stay for another three years. I enjoyed his approach.

“We were once 18 points clear of City but we lost at home 2-1. We were still 15 points ahead but he was furious. Then I realised: he’s a winner.”

Van Persie has struggled to replicate the form that saw him finish his debut season in Manchester as the Premier League’s top scorer with 26 goals as United won their 20th title.
An injury-hit campaign under David Moyes saw Van Persie find the net only 12 times in the league, while he has managed three from nine appearances under compatriot Van Gaal.

“Three goals in nine games is not enough,” the 31-year-old said. “Against Chelsea I had a nice chance and I had three options: chip it, go round the keeper or just [shoot] straight at the goal. I chose the last and safest. If I wouldn’t have thought it over I would just chip it. I just have to trust again in my intuition.”

Despite United recording their worst start to a season since 1986 under the former Holland coach, Van Persie has faith that they can turn things around and revealed some. “We train more and more intensely than in previous years. We have to get used to that.”

Van Persie also revealed he has discussed recent criticism of his performances by the BBC and BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage with the former Wales midfielder.

“My kids go to the same school as Robbie Savage, a great lad,” he said. “I once asked him why he was so harsh in his judgments. He told me it had to do with the competition in the media landscape, between television stations. He admitted to sometimes judging harder than is reasonable but also that he has a mortgage to pay.”www.theguardian.com/football/2014/nov/07/robin-van-persie-alex-ferguson-manchester-united
