Abia Leather Workers Want Industrial Site To Boost Output Agency Report — Dec 23, 2014 | 0 Comments The Leather Product Manufacturers Association of Abia (LEPMAS) on Tuesday called on the state government to provide an industrial site and other facilities needed to boost their productivity. The President of LEPMAS, Mr Chigozie Uzoma, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba, Abia. He said that the association needed an industrial site with expanded work floor to help them utilise some big machinery which they received from donor agencies and partners. “We are asking for an industrial site because some of the machinery we were given by Growth and Employment in the States (GEMS) project cannot be put to use in these small shops we are in now. “So, we need an expanded work floor with all-day-round electricity supply to power such machines. “With such machines, our leather products will be made according to international standards and our productivity will increase because machines work faster than men,” he said. Uzoma said that with government’s assistance in these areas, the leather works sector in Abia state would grow and contribute substantially to Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings. The president said that LEPMAS should be provided with long term loans to enable them to boost their productivity. He requested for reduction in interest rate on loans, adding that with the products coming off the production line at a cheaper rate, they would compete favourably with their foreign counterparts. He said that the sector, which could boast of about 15,600 registered members, would double its job output if given the necessary support. B2mario:wow! is that Aba? why all this bad mouth about ABA being dirt or slum? i presume they haven't been to Aba. not as bad as they painted it. can't even believe they have that spacious and wide dual carriage like this one..... Onitsha doesn't even have single dual carriage road apart from Fed Govrt high ways Asaba/enugu rd. the inner hoods are worst then what am seeing here.. too narrow like a path way, no pedestrian side walk and always drag road with motorist. Onitsha is little bit better only at upper iweka the rest are in sorry state. even the work I saw was so shabby and rough with no finishing no thanks to IDC.... hope to visit this city soon.... |

TA Orji Swears In Anambra Indigene As Chief Judge Of Abia State Dec 23, 2014 ABIA State Governor Theodore Orji yesterday swore in Justice Theresa Uzoamaka Uzokwe as the substantive Chief Judge of the state after approval by the state house of assembly, the state judicial commission and the National Judicial Commission. Justice Uzokwe, who is native of Anambra State, started her career in the old Imo State from which Abia state was created and held the office of the State Chief Chief Judge twice in acting capacity. The Guardian also gathered that she (Justice Uzokwe) is one of, if not the longest serving justice of the state judiciary and said to have acquired 33 years post law graduation experience with nineteen as a judge. Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony at the executive council chambers of the Government House, Umuahia, Governor Theodore Orji said that the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria vested on the Governor, the state House of Assembly, the Judicial Service Commission and the National Judicial Council (NJC) the power of appointing an acting or substantive Chief Judge and in keeping with section 271(5) of the 1999 Constitution appointed Justice Uzokwe the new chief judge of Abia state. The Governor expressed confidence that the new Chief Judge would continue to discharge her duties diligently and charged her to unite the judiciary and maintain the synergy between the three arms of government in the state. Elated by her substantive appointment, Justice Uzokwe expressed gratitude to the governor and the state and pledged to abide by and justify her oath of office. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/national-news/191451-why-abia-appointed-non-indigene-as-cj-by-orji |

Behold, Abia Int’l Airport 2 BY OUR REPORTER ON DECEMBER 28, 2014 COVER ■ Another wonder of the world to be built within 4 months BY HENRY UMAHI (kinghenrysun@yahoo.com) One of the legacy projects which the Abia State Government wants to bequeath to the state before it leaves office on May 29, next year is an airport. In fact, speaking through his Special Adviser on Public Communication, Mr Ben Onyechere, the governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to build an airport in the state. The essence, government posited, was that considering the location of Aba, as the eastern commercial pride, it will boost investment in the state thereby turning around the economy of the state. It does not matter that the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri is some kilometres away just as the Port Harcourt Airport. In a statement, he said: “It has become imperative that an airport should be sited in Abia State, considering its location as the commercial and industrial nerve centre of the South East. I’m convinced beyond doubt that business and tourism potentials of the state will be enhanced greatly, as much as it will attract more opportunities to grow existing facilities in the state. “There is equally no doubt that there will be an influx of employment that will immensely generate developmental initiatives, if this onerous project is realized.” He added: “However, the state is faced with numerous contending challenges but in spite of that, I am resolute in my determination to build an airport which will complement all other efforts we have made to bring the state at par with its contemporaries. “An average Abia man is commerce-oriented, most of whose businesses are scattered all over the world, and as such the need for this project has become overwhelming as much as it has become necessary to avail returning Abians to a one-stop trip.” Mr James Kwubiri Okpara, Abia State Commissioner for Special Services, also stated that there was no going back on the project. He told a newspaper: “By the grace of God, I am the secretary of the airport committee and we have said it several times that we are committed to giving an airport to the people of Abia State. The avalanche of expressions of interest by the people of Abia shows that this is a project they all need and yearn for. In this matter too, contractors have been given a fair chance to bid for the work. We have both Nigerian and Chinese companies bidding for it. We also have an Irish company who wants to partner the Abia State government to ensure that this becomes a reality. It is unusual because they come to approach you and not you going to approach them. “This tells you that people outside realise what government is doing to better the lot of the people. If, for instance, they do not have confidence in government, they will not come forward to be involved in this airport project.” Justifying the desirability and viability of the airport, he explained: “The people of Abia State have asked for an airport and we are bent on providing one for them. The request made by Abia people for an airport is indeed overwhelming. The volume of passenger traffic from Owerri Airport to Abuja and Lagos shows that the people of Abia State constitute the majority. The people of Abia State travelling from here to outside the country on a daily basis are overwhelming. “Close to us is the Owerri Airport and nearly 80 per cent of the people who use it are from Abia State. It is verifiable. So, the pressure is on us to build our own airport to solve this problem. The same applies to Enugu Airport and the same with Port Harcourt Airport. Don’t forget that Aba is in Abia State and it is one of the most memorable commercial cities in Nigeria. So, the request by Abia for an airport is a momentum that has built over the years. And now the government says this is the right time to give Abia people an airport.” The commissioner further said: “This is why we are building a modern .......continue www.sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=97492 |
