Careers In Public Health by Etinosajay(m): 4:46pm On Dec 25, 2014
This thread is to bring ideas, information, advice, discussion, direction and achieving a common goal for prospective public health professionals.

Firstly, I'm starting out my career in public health. That's 110% decided. I have a bachelor's degree in the sciences and a relatively sound knowledge of research.

Public Health is an enormous discipline which is open to everyone irrespective of their originating academic background, towards achieving a safe and planned public health.

In Nigeria, public health is mostly available at a higher Cadre of learning, starting from the masters degree setup, so I have found out. FUTO however has programme for undergrads.

The university of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), University of Lagos are example of schools with Public Health Department which award degrees in Public Health. Entry requirements vary between these schools, so be sure to check the admission requirements of these schools to guide you in your decision making

As I'm starting out my own career, I will not have all the knowledge to pass along, therefore I urge experienced public health professionals operating in Nigeria and elsewhere to post valuable contributions to aid prospective, entry level, mid-career and top-level public health professionals here

I'm not so sure of PGD's in Public Health, but definitely as a full masters degree. Maybe U of Ibadan offers PGD, you can look at it.

However I think your HND with good standing should qualify you for admission into a master's degree study.

Even a bachelor's degree holder would require GMAT for many A and B grade graduate schools overseas.

As for Nigerian schools, I suggest you fiind out directly from the department admissions officer, but I am sure you can apply for a master's directly with an HND of good standing

Human nutrition is a brilliant subject area with fascinating opportunities in Nigeria and beyond. It's available as a first degree study and also as an aspect of public health study at the masters level and doctorate.

If you have a good ND result, apply for DE as you intent doing. Cheers

M.Sc in public health opens one to opportunity in what and what institution?

A degree in public health brings opportunity in a limitless field, especially in health institutions, both locally, nationally, regionally and internationally as Health Administrators/Managers, Program Directors, Epidemiologist, Public Health statisticians, Environmental Health Educators, EH sanitary officers, all generally in health ministries and parastatals. Other health professionals have also found positions in Occupational Health and safety department of most multinational and transnational corporations.

Well, the decision is yours to make. Doctors also take on MSC public health at some time in their careers

Doctors are into public health now, so its really hard for a graduate of Biochem or Mcb to get in, they mostly take graduates of Medicine.

That's very false my friend. I used to think so until I got admission in one of the best schools in Nigeria in Public Health and I'm not a doctor.

These categories of public health entrants (social workers, psychology graduates, science graduates) are equally as relevant as the doctor in ensuring good public health.

Furthermore, there's a stream for doctors in public health, like clinical epidemiology, those are one of the few areas that requires a medical degree for entrance.

Field Epidemiology,
Medical statistics
Health Administration
Environmental Health
And many more streams are open to graduates from diverse fields with proven interest and intellect in tackling public health issues.

Happy new year to you too. As a professional undergraduate degree programme, it covers all aspects of public health. WHO recently nominated the dept as a hub for disease control in africa. Visit futo.edu.ng/schools/health/public, for a comprehensive info.

As much as I know, it is possible to be self employed. As a consultant for example.

Your knowledge of public health could be useful in designing public health solutions as an entrepreneur.

As per lucrative tendency in public health, Environmental health seems to be doing well, occupational health and safety too
