You do not have to be a graduate of medicine to be admitted to MPH epi, as a graduate of pharmacology. Read more from the postgrad prospectus available on the PG schools website

Hello house, please help me out, I'm confused btw 1. mph with spec. in Community health, environmental health and occupational safety,
2.msc health education with spec in school health education, community health education and environmental and safety education.
I'm more attracted to environmental and safety but I don't know if an MSc in health education will be in the same level as mph? Advice needed plz as I want to process my form next week @uniben

@etinosajay.. You are doing a fantastic job here. Pls keep it up. There is actually a difference between Masters of public Health (MPH) and master of science in Public health (MSc in Public health). MPh is professional and strictly for doctors while MSc Ph is academic degree for graduate of, not generally limited to, human, social and natural sciences. So @Sard cannot go for Mph but MSc ph.

That's not being sidelined. You're not trained as a doctor, so you probably are not qualified to cope with the intricacies of Clinical Public Health.

For the past six years, public health or environmental health graduates have not been employed and I think we need to know the reason why? This course is always on in health school and other professions get jobs every year but we are been left out whereas we have quack employees ie people that got the job through connections and dubious means while the ones who has got public health in their body and soul are been left out to suffer in the public and we would come out to shout prevention is better and cheaper than cure but we are concentrating on the curative aspect leaving the profession to die down

The painful aspect is we have heroes who have pledged their allegiance to the profession and they are watching it die not minding their young folks not minding the future of public health. Sincerely, our boss in the profession has failed us turning us to what we have planned not to be right from the onset we chose to study public health or environmental health as a profession

Hmmm...quite an outpouring of the soul.

I'm not sure what response will be satisfactory for you as it is.

I'd like to think everything you've said happens, but it is worthy of note that this isn't a vendetta against public health professionals.

There are several factors you should understand in following the line of thought you have talked extensively about.

First of all, you should know there is a high level of unemployment and under employment in the nation, this is not peculiar to public health as a profession.

Second of all, because there is unemployment, favoritism seem to prevail as against the best hands. This is down to corruption which in turn is a common canker worm in Nigerian Public Service. Think of Customs, Think of Immigration, nay even the Police.

Thirdly, I'd like to include factors like Personal Development, Personal Dreams, personal Aim and Objectives, Individual career path. All of these, characteristics of the individual. This factor is very important. If you eventually get the opportunity to apply for a public health opening, an improperly balanced profile may inhibit your job hunting. Many applicant also go as far as applying for a job that's entirely different from their expertise. For example an Environmental Health Specialist, applying for a job as Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist in a clearly Epi-based organisation. Don't shoot yourself in the leg, for every job opening, read the requirements, job description and company's objectives.

If I may refer to your very first misunderstood question that if u do not get a job along this line, what should you do?

"My answer, that's entirely your decision. No one knows why you ventured into public health more than yourself. If I may draw a comparison. Muhammadu Buhari tried many times at becoming President, and he succeeded at the 4th attempt. He might have ended as a council chairman, if he hadn't been persistent or if he carried a fake desire.

Lastly, the God factor. I can't explain this anymore than it has explained itself.

Which of the two do you like most? One factor is the duration, Agric is 5yrs in Ife while Public health is 4yrs. Another factor is that you pay like 150k yearly in Uniosun while OAU goes for maximum of 50k.. Career wise, both have good prospect but only you knows what you want. Do you like farming? or You would also like to be seeking for jobs after 5yrs. Also another thing is that Uniosun, Babcock and FUTO are the only 3 schools doing PH at the Undergraduate level in Nigeria, much as it is also an opportunity (because it's still a fertile land withe few entrants), my fear with Uniosun is accreditation by NUC, I hope it's not disacredited while you are at it just like the did to their medicine students. Though, they are still have nursing, my prayer is that they should be able to ensure it's continued accreditaion. The ball is now in your court to juxtapose and take a decision, am close to both schools.

We just concluded our MPH first semester exam at UniBen. The program at uniben is quite bulky being a part time prog and all encompassing. One had to take two weeks off work to thoroughly prepare for the exam as well as prepare a research proposal which was 40% of a particular course. i was reading btwn 12-18hrs daily for those two weeks to enable me get fit for those exams. So MPH as it is in Uniben is not child's play at all. After paying almost 330k you dont want to fail any course and experience further delays. But all glory to God for His grace!

Good to know that.

However it is unfortunate that at this time, UNIBEN still does not have a faculty of of public health, and therefore cannot offer much options in the study of public health.

Their MSC, MPH and Dr.PH is under the auspices of the Center for excellence in reproductive health and innovation, with emphasis on reproductive and family health.

This program is run out of the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and the Department of Community Health, all under the School of Medicine.
