Quite true.

I suggest our school system be refurbished. Nobody is really benefiting from its current status. The government should see to this asap. Its really discouraging if they only thing i'll have to do is read the only outdated material given to me to pass exams.

All these theories are trash. The only reason why unemployment is high in Nigeria is because the market is saturated. Produce a 50 thousand medical doctors today using Harvard standard and put them in Bayelsa state with population of less than 2million
I can assure you more than 40 thousand of them will be jobless.
I am a Nigerian graduate and hold an MSsc, currently doing my PhD outside Nigeria. I have not met any outstanding student outside Nigeria that I have not seen more gifted obese within Nigeria. Infact, I have seen lots of people with abilities but limited because of over competition in Nigeria. The only lasting solution is to drastically expand our economy, reduce population growth, reduce graduate turn out and increase lower level skill acquisition cadres. Without that, all these theories will not work. There are PhD holder who are jobless in UK, USA etc.there are lots and lots of jobless engineering graduate in USA. The average time to complete a PhD in USA is about 5.5years. All thse are verifiable facts. We can't how've increase our economic sector when d stimulants if growth are lacking...power, infrastructure and some level of ciruption-free society

not all this is true....

how can u say we have unemployment because lectures fail to upgrade them selves....Na lecturer dey look for work..

u can't ppl are unemployed because education standard is low!....they are trained in Nigerian schools... Nigeria should give them jobs that meets the standard of the knowledge they ve imparted..

lack of digital experience...
you and I know today that its a big lie...
since 2010 statistics has it dat in Nigeria 28.4persons in every 100 Nigeria are computer users.....are all these ppl employed today.....

Failure of school curriculum to place
emphasis on practical concepts of
entrepreneurship
... I disagree..
some years back Obj while he was in power made it compulsory for every student to take entrepreneurship as a course at least twice before graduation.... if u didn't take that course and u graduate... ur school is to blame not Fg.

I agree with this ones...

Most of the programmes run in the
universities are irrelevant ...
u studied computer-IRS in FCE where do u want to work? IF not in an ISLAMIC BANK..
u studied Language (Yoruba)+Agric.... who's going to employ u ? of a BABALAWO..

Many Nigerian Youth do not get employment
because they do not know how to seek for it....

etc....

*MOST IMPORTANTLY, GODS FAVOUR IS D MOST IMPORTANT...

In my view,(Might sound harsh) they're generally unemployable because of the lazy, laid back mentality permeating our generation. Nigerian youths mostly want a Federal Government job where they can lazy about all day and have little or no challenges but still get well paid. That's why the yoke of entrepreneurship seems hard as most of us would rather settle for security of 8am - 5pm.

The problem is.. The mentality! Cos even when such people bring themselves to take the tasking and somewhat difficult roles, they always feel like they're stretched beyond their limits with every new assignment.. #2cents

Unemployment will continue to be on its increase, this is not only because our graduates are unemployable but because our government has rated higher educated above skill acquisition. Our technical schools are nothing to write about, there is limit to what you can do and where you can reach if you are not a graduate. Everybody now wants to be a graduate whereas some are gifted with different skills. Government should revive our technical school so as to reduce unecessary crowd in our higher institutions.

Theory based education and not problem solving focus. The moment high school students learn for example how electricity is produced -magnetic field moving around a copper wire-they should start putting that into practice. Improving with locally sourced magnets and copper wire and generating elec in the classroom-even if it can only be measured by small movement of an amp reader- and, supported by their teachers, start discussing how they could make their projects viable and at a small scale. etc etc

Very funny topic. How does a sick educational system expect to produce healthy and capable graduates? How can people who never gave any platform for Nigerians to excel academically, come out and say the fault is from the graduates themselves. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! There is God ooo.

Any employable graduate from a Nigerian school must have been eccentrically determined in school. The school system only offers certificates. That's all.
Re: 13 Major Reasons Why Nigerian Graduates Are Unemployable by lafuria1(m): 6:03pm On Jan 02, 2015
Where are the jobs to start with? The jobs don't exist. The few ones you see are immediately taken by friends and family members of the company staffs. There is one company I know that employed well over 40 fresh graduates but you see, no interview was done, everyone came base on recommendations.

This all talk of Nigerian graduates are unemployable are just trash.

You meant that there are jobs for them but employers refused to employ them because they are unemployable? In Nigeria where 1000 graduates would apply for 5 job vacancies. If I may ask, where are these employers getting their staff? Guy, let me tell you one fact: less people are establishing industries these days in Nigeria, and many companies are moving to other neighboring countries where cost of production, most especially power is very cheap.

Well essentially, the problem has a lot to do with the fact that we are an oil dependent economy.

If we were an industrial economy.....every student and their teacher would be committed to developing an education system that would be knowledge driven and practical oriented. That is because the major employers in such an economy would be innovators and companies that need innovation because they have to stay ahead of the game. So, there would be no such thing as cramming, expo, etc...because when you are working in a manufacturing economy....you have to prove yourself every day.....that you are master of your field.Invariably one won;t need to tell people to do internship in such an economy.....they would already be interns by force...from primary school.

But we are an oil dependent economy. As such, the main employers are not industries...because we are using our oil money to import and import the things that we should make. Even our manufacturing is reduced to making expies of the stuff made abroad....to the specifications of foreign makers...because no one wants to take the risk of innovating and losing money as a result of poor patronage....when you can make money quick being an importer-exporter.As a result....we end up with an economy where the main occupation is getting your share of the oil money. As such...who the h""""l needs knowledge.....you can just buy it all with oyel money. That is why WAEC has mass failure, that is why hundreds of graduates are half baked, that is why we have a large proportion of illiterates.Because in an oil society....who needs knowledge? You do not need knowledge to survive. You just need more oil money (and BTW...that is why the argument over resource control is really nonsensical. The South South...and the rest of the country need a Knowledge based education...instead of begging to be kept like rich men's wives on some sort of oil based money cornucopia that will never run out!)

Want my solution to the above? We have to make our education system practical and problem solving oriented. But that needs a change in mindset. We are not a rich nation. We are a poor nation. The minute we get that into our head and stop deceiving ourselves....is the minute we are on the road to a knowledge based society....and an end to half baked graduates.

Oil is a curse.

Nonsense! Nigerian graduates are unemployable? What about all those who have graduated and are working? You must have been person who is doing their jobs for them. All graduates here who concur to this on this forum are the one who are unemployable. I hate people who generalise like this. Plenty of Nigerian graduates are hard-working, serious despite the limitation and challenges of their society and are employable. Many both home and abroad have been employed and are distinguishing themselves in the chosen careers. I am proud to be a Nigerian graduate.

If these graduates are in a country where the private sector create jobs, they will be employed, then trained or re-trained on the job.
The biggest reason why Nigerian graduates don't get job is because there are no jobs in the useful sector of the economy (private sector).

Leaders have failed when they start blaming their followers.
Just keep doing something and hoping for the best. Please, dont forget to also look outside the shores of this country because our leaders have failed woefully.

well, poor now, but surely, it must get poorer if Nigerians make the mistake of voting into power the anti-Western education people with their leader - the goggle-wearing rtd General.

It does not matter who you vote....so long as Nigerians think that they can buy their way to development with all their resources...instead of realising that their resources are limited....and using said resources as the basis of industrial development....thus forcing the educaiton system to be more knowledge driven and practical driven....because when you realize that innovation is what is the bread and butter of your country....not waiting for some payout from the government/oil driven payout.....you will get a education system that is knowledge driven.....and a lack of half baked graduates.

That is the problem with this country's education system.....not whether the ruler is Hausa,Yoruba,Igbo, fulani, Muslim , Christian, or whatever....even extraterrestrial. So long as Nigerians think that the oil money is enough.....they will never ever be forced to become innovative.

This is hilarious!! All these points could be attributed to the population explosion. By the way, what do we mean by "unemployable"? Were Nigerian graduates produced in the last 60yr better than the present ones? Of course, no.
