Since Oct 2014, all state schools(Federal Schools as in the case of Nigeria) officially were declared tuition free. The aim is to attract Internationally qualified professionals to Germany in large numbers because of their Well developed economy and the need to sustain growth.

Let me however state here that though the tuition is free, your living cost is not i.e the money you will use in sustaining yourself when you get there. Although all students are automatically granted a work permit, and with the low rate of unemployment, you can easily secure a Job and take care of yourself.

So we advice those of you qualified to take advantage of the opportunity and get an Internationally recognised Masters degree.

Thank You

@greennproud

Bros, i'll appreciate if you do not change d direction of this thread. Whatever you have to sell to the public, do it with your own thread or signature.

Only responses and posts which gives information on public health is what we need here. There are many threads in the travel and education section to cater for your objective.

@wunmi590 I hope you understand my standpoint. I'm not against foreign degrees, but if I wanted foreign degree in public health, Germany will not be my first country to be considered. For the records, UNN, UI, ABU, zaria offer relatively good programmes in public health.

As a graduate of physics, you will have to first undertake pre-masters programme which will satisfy the entry requirement for a full blown masters degree programme in Public Health.

Thanks Etin. I appreciate your response

Etinosajay:

As much as I know, it is possible to be self employed. As a consultant for example.

Your knowledge of public health could be useful in designing public health solutions as an entrepreneur.

As per lucrative tendency in public health, Environmental health seems to be doing well, occupational health and safety too

I 'm considering UI, UNILORIN & OAU, it will all depend on time of availability of forms, tuition fees, adherence of school to academic calender, and other information I get by then. I 'm also thinking of occupational or environmental health. Those two have great prospects.
What about you,bro?

UI does it for me. Had an admission from them a year ago, but declined. Epidemiology and disease control is more of it for me. It's also lucrative too, considerably.

What were you given then?

MPH (Field Epidemiology)

250k will be insufficient. You have to Consider tuition & living expenses, books and study materials and travel costs.

First year tuition was about 100k as at then

Hi everyone!
I am a graduate of Biochemistry currently studying MPH in India. I have 3 options from which to choose my area of specialization viz;
Epidemiology
Environmental and occupational health
Maternal and child health.
Which would you guys suggest?
Thanks.

No one can suggest a stream for you to follow. We can attempt to shed light on these options and you ultimately would decide which you're passionate about.

All three options you have mentioned are brilliant areas to venture into depending on your motivation.

If you love the idea of disease control and disease mapping, then Epidemiology is your thing. For example in the last case of Ebola infection, an epidemiologist will be right on top of it, assessing, collating and designing solutions to contain it's spread. Daily, an epidemiologist will constantly review disease control systems for emerging, re-emerging and other diseases of public health importance.

Environmental Health which many consider as the base study of public health and rightly so, as the name implies, deals with active study of the parameters which ensures a safe and healthy environment for the public. Environmental health while appearing to have a simple and surface nomenclature and definition, is actually a complex area of study, indeed as complex as the environment itself. Occupational Health goes further to touch the working environment. Occupational health experts are environmental health specialists ensuring safe workplaces. Call them safety officers if you like.

Mental and child health: many psychology graduates easily find love here, as it consolidates or further broadens their scope of emphasis.

Thanks. However, which do u think is most marketable, most professional and most versatile.
And...as someone with biochemistry background, which do u think would suit me the best? For example, i think employers may consider background too.

NB: maternal and child health , not mental

The open university doesn't award Masters degrees in Public health. And the scope of community health in question is not the same as an MPH degree study

You will likely have to complete a one year remedial PGD in health and allied sciences. That should satisfy the requirement to get into MPH proper

@etinosajay.. You are doing a fantastic job here. Pls keep it up. There is actually a difference between Masters of public Health (MPH) and master of science in Public health (MSc in Public health). MPh is professional and strictly for doctors while MSc Ph is academic degree for graduate of, not generally limited to, human, social and natural sciences. So @Sard cannot go for Mph but MSc ph.
Re: Careers In Public Health by EbunLanre(f): 1:38pm On Apr 08, 2015
@chillaxpro I am not too sure about this. Try get contacts in unilag PG. I think you can apply for MSc PH with 3rd class you need to just pass d selection exams really well. Pls find out more. Although there was no grade for entry requirement for Msc Ph in their last year Pg Prospectus.

@ebunlanre

Thanks for the acknowledgment, and welcome to the team.

However, MPH isn't meant for doctors only. Anyone with brazen interest and the pursuit of knowledge in public health can follow this career path. Sociologists, social workers, Laboratory technologist, psychologists, etcetera. Everyone brings their wealth of experience in diverse field into good use while chosing and following public health as a career.

MPH and MSC public health are not markedly different, as they both offer 90-95 % similar course modules. The difference between these lies towards the tail end of the degree study. While an MSC public health student will undergo a project or thesis, an MPH student will undergo either a thesis and a practicum or just a practicum.

In other words, Msc public health is thesis/research methodology based, while MPH is professional based.

To your assertion that only medical doctors or allied professions can undergo MPH, that is not entirely correct. MPH has different streams or what you may call specializations. There are streams within MPH that requires strictly an MBBS or BDS as entry requirement. For example Clinical Epidemiology, Mental Health.

Other streams like Epidemiology (Field), Environmental Health/occupational health, Global health, health promotion, etc are open to qualified graduates from sciences, arts, as the requirement may state.

In the same vane, MSC is also open to graduates with medical degrees.

Take a little while and read from the links below. Also see screenshot from University of ibadan postgraduate prospectus showing admission requirement for MPH degrees
