Madam, this isn't an ideal poultry house as this will cause poor ventilation, you don't even build on a wall-apologies,ma.
My Advise: reduce the coaches as previously advised and based on experience, methinks your birds would be better off on deep litter than in cages with this type of construction. Also, plan to install at least ceiling fans and iced blocks to combat excessive temperature.
Concerning point of lay and D.O.C source, you may consider the big names in the industry as they have a name to protect but please ensure you do flock profiling of the birds at a good laboratory.
Many thanks and best wishes.

Thanks a lot, actually working on reducing the cooaches by 2. Are you in Lagos?

Try to keep the liter from getting so wet, that means changing the liter regularly, it is not going to be easy, but that is about what you have to do. Good luck

Yes it is n't going to be easy but if you are able to derive some bio based products out of it the packing of the litters won't be stress as it will serve as raw materials for your farm house.During brooding you won't need any heat source other than the litters

Fnk I am still sourcing for materials I wanna do it yourself a manure conyeyor belt to pull droppings from 1200 birds in battery cages.I see manure handling as one of the big challenges in poultry business and its one of the reasons why that job isn't so attractive to employees."Nobody wanna smell shit yet they wanna spend shit money"

True ooo, I am sure you can put something together, are you able to get the materials that you will need locally? There is a farm I visited sometime ago, they have a pit that they flush the poo into and some farmers or fish farmer come to pack them, So thinking about it, using a power hose to flush the poo on a daily bases. But then, the smell is a function of wetness that creates the chemical reaction, So, the deal is to keep the poo dry. I have not really invested time to check things out though, because I am not doing layers at the moment, and in my broilers pen, I am installing DIY water drinker (using the nipples) I will hang them up by tomorrow, that will cut the wetness by almost 80%, because the attendants while changing the water, spill a lot on the floor, and the birds step into it, and even knock over the water holder every now and then. So, with this system, we don't have to worry again about wetness as a result of water, only through their poo which can be managed. Also, there is a DIY I saw on using a 4" PVC pipe to construct their feeder, in such a way that they won't spill the feed on the floor. There will be a small mechanism that will help push the feed through the pipe so that the attendants are not going through the pen filling one feeder at a time, also this will curtail feed wastage. With all this in place the work will be less tedious for my staffs, it will also curtail mortality as their will always be fresh water running in the water drinker.
As I think about entering the layers market before this year runs out, I will start doing some investigation, though I have the largest space in the area where my farm is, at the same time I don't want to a nuisance to them, I want to be corporate responsible. LOL!!!

I love that. This is the time to make that profession a better profession for all.we should try and standardise our farms at least to make it more attractive using locally available materials.we can do it.

oga fnk, we think alike, am already working on using the nipples for my layers on the floor. i bought some nipple drinkers and am expecting them next month. the nipples(attached to a PVC) will be adjustable to suit the age of the birds. i belive this method will keep the pen dry and free from disease.

Yap. later this morning, I am going to be in the farm working to get the drinkers set up, I hope the ones you bought is the ones that the tip can move in all direction, the ones that only goes up and down gets spoiled easily and the birds will have to push it in for water to come out. the best ones moves 360 degree, so it is easy for the birds to drink from it.

Hello house. Really learnt a lot from following the discussions here. I'm in the middle of plans to kick-off my poultry farm and need information in respect of the farm layout.

1. What is the advisable optimal dimensions of a poultry pen (battery cage)?
2. Is it advisable to have more than 2 rows of cage in a pen?
3. What is the optimal spacing between to pens?
4. What is the advisable distance between a pen and the fence.
5. What is the required spacing between the pen walls and the cage rows in the pen?

I believe the layout/spacing would go a long way to affect productivity.

Please enlighten me.

1. What is the advisable optimal dimensions of a poultry pen (battery cage)? A cage is about 8 feet wide. If you plant to do two rows, 26 feet is okay IMO
2. Is it advisable to have more than 2 rows of cage in a pen? No, except you will be using a form of forced ventilation e.g. exhaust fans
3. What is the optimal spacing between to pens? 4 Feet is enough
4. What is the advisable distance between a pen and the fence. 4 feet is also enough but you can allow more than if you have lots of space but if it is more than 6 feet, I'll say you're not utilizing your space optimally
5. What is the required spacing between the pen walls and the cage rows in the pen? Pen wall and Cage - 3 feet; Between Cages - 4 feet. With the assumption that the block your pen wall is more than two coaches high

I believe the layout/spacing would go a long way to affect productivity.

Please enlighten me.

@laposta

Many thanks for the shared info.

I would try to utilise these info in my farm layout and subsequent construction.

I had thought that a 40ft by 120ft pen would accomodate 5,000 layers but from what you gave this might not be possible.

Well, if you can make it two pens of 120ft by 25ft each with a 4ft space in between them, you can house about 3,600 birds altogether (15 cages per pen and 120 birds per cage).

Where is your farm located? What's the size of your land? I could help you set it up (Farm Layout design, Pen construction, Cage Purchase and Fitting, etc) for a reasonable fee. Feel free to reach out to me on hola-ologe@hotmail.com

If you don't want to see your chicken dying then don't try it.chickens are bound to die but all you can do is to reduce your mortality. Its all about what works for you not necessarily what works for Mr.A .Start small and discover how you can gradually reduce your mortality, how to prevent diseases and cultivate good poultry management.
Good luck and happy farming as you start small and grow big.

Soooo, true guys, there are bunch of things that can make your birds die, it is about reducing the rate, I just lost over 20 from my day old few days ago from heat stress, my concussion couldn't save them, So start small and try everything you can think of, and you will come up with something.
