I'm curious but is this the change APC is talking about? If so, well, isn't this counter productive instead of productive. The nation unemployment rate is massive, rather than figure out ways to increase industries in Nigeria thus an increase in employment, the change group is suggesting opposite. Really? Are they even thinking straight or are they suggesting things they think sounds right? |

fkaz: with Gej automotive policy, Nigeria is at the verge of producing car as IVM, PAN, NISSAN, FORD have begun assembling and some building there assenmbling car plants. This when fully pulled through will see Nigeria a hub of vehicle manufacturing in Africa with its job creation and transfer of technology to mention a few. Then another person tells you he will revert this progress that is diversifying our economy and you call him a focused leader? i feel terrible at the way people reason and make choices thesedays. osinbajo's claim is a minus to their campaign but unfoutunately people of your crop extol and exalt this unintelligent decision. its terrible how we reason thesedays.... |

This a very good indication that the auto policy that is just taking off will be killed by APC. Just like Buhari killed the rail project in Lagos, they will kill all the good economic policies that are on ground. Vote wisely! Nigeria is undergoing visible change. Say no to fraudulent change. barcanista: Are you saying we don't buy our cars for now but wait till the time government is able to bring down the cost of owning a car? The pocket plays a part in the buying decision of consumers. Increasing tariff on tokunbo cars will not make me buy a brand new that is twice the price. The auto policy is a very good idea (on paper) but i don't see how the goals will be achieved if the market is not taken into consideration. At current price, the policy (fully implemented) will bring pain to Nigerians instead of jobs. 1 Like |

enigmang: Osinbajo stressed that you can only effects the ban when the local production is encouraged and the production of locally made vehicles are fully on ground. Agriculture is what we are known for as Africa, production of tomatoes and rice is not a problem if the efficient supports and policies are given to the farmers. I wonder how you failed to see this in his statements. |

Zikkyy:Bro, I agree that the policy may inflict temporal pain on the economy, but it is a good one on the long and mid term. The govenment only need to follow up this plan holistically and provision of infrastructure. This will shoot down production costs and it will affect the eventual price. Bro, this policy is good |

Gbawe: The path to economic productivity, growth and development doesn’t come easy, especially in a world filled with stiff competition and uncertainty. There are certain key decisions that a national government must take towards ensuring that a country stays competitive in the global economy. One of these is restricting the consumption of foreign products by its citizens. This promotes productivity and stimulates job creation and economic growth. After economic growth is achieved and the welfare of citizens improved, the government may grant its citizens the luxury of consuming products produced in other countries. This is how it is done in all economies that achieved growth and prosperity. Nigerians always cite the telecoms revolution as a good reason for privatization and laissez-faire. Imagine that Obasanjo refused to grant licenses to foreign telecom operators due to the reasons nairalanders are using to object the automotive policy, we would not have had any telecoms and ict revolution. Before MTN and other Telcos sold their towers to Helios, they were spending billions of naira to power their service masts every year. That didn’t deter them from operating in the country still. They were still in operating profitably and creating value for the economy. My point is that there’s no such thing as a wrong time for the implementation of policies that would encourage productivity, job creation and economic competitiveness. If we are waiting for the right time, we would never get there. The unnecessary procrastination leads to economic losses which are grave. The time is now! We are a country of 170 million with a high population growth rate; we cannot sustain or continue being persistent consumers of foreign goods. Any government that does not understand this is not worth our time and should be voted out or not voted in. 1 Like |

The problem with most Nigerian politicians is that they find it hard to accept a good policy by their opponent even if the policy is good. I do not see what APC is trying to achieve by reducing the tariff on imported cars when automobiles companies are already partnering with some Nigerian companies into car production. I wonder the kind of message they are sending to those companies. I cannot see any government that will prioritize car ownership over job creation. The high tariff will not stop importation of cars into the country, the rich will always drive the luxury cars. When Malaysia started Proton (their national car) in 1983, it was merely assembling Mitsubishi cars, to make the company grow, Malaysia imposed as high as 300% import duty and taxes on foreign cars (Even at that, to import foreign car, you will require a special licence) still that didn't stop foreign car importation but it helped Proton grow and today, the car is going places. If we don't do this now, I wonder when the time will be right. Some policies can bring short term pain for a much better long term benefit. If you lower tariff for foreign cars, most middle class people will prefer tokumbo Mercedes over a new Innoson car while the rich will always buy brand new Mercedes, who then will buy made in Nigeria cars knowing fully well that these companies have developed core competencies over the years, as such will always have lower production cost than Innoson. The issue should be, how to we stop smugglers and how to develop a good auto financing scheme in form of loans to new car owners. We mustn't be dumping ground for foreign used cars. 3 Likes |

In my opinion slashing the tariff on imported cars will be a step backwards. Providing an enabling environment for the new auto manufacturing coys to thrive and boost output on the other hand will have a long term positive effect on the economy and job creation. |

He said under APC government, it would be criminal not to pay pensions, saying the law that would be put in place would compel employers to ensure pensioners got their entitlements as soon as they retire. our politicians have completely lost touch with reality, the PFA, and not the government or employer pays pension at retirement. the employer only remits her own share of the contributory pension over the years. 1 Like |
