hi all, I found one of my pullets "very" weak dis morning, it couldnt stand nor walk, I av separated it from d others. pls wat could b wrong nd wat can I do?
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 9:50am On Feb 11, 2015
Globaby01. A 9 days old chick should still be in brood. Keep your birds for few days more. I wouldn't know if you got vaccination schedule from the hatchery you got your birds. If yes, follow the instructions. If no, I'll advise you give gumboro & lasota vaccines to your birds within their first 28 - 30 days leaving a minimum of 10 days between each vaccine. Since there are only 45 birds, 200 dose vaccine should be ok. Success.

what's 200 dose, the vaccine are in bottles, so how many bottles make this 200 dose? from the info on this publication, I was asked to give them gumboro when they are 10 days. I already gave them this morning
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 2:06pm On Feb 11, 2015
Globaby01. vaccines are in doses. each bottle has the dosage written on it; 200 & 1000. the dosage you use is dependent on the number of birds you have. you use 200 for a flock of less than/equal to 200, etc. You may check the paper on the bottle if you have not thrown it away. I'll advise you carry a more experienced person along for a while to avoid vaccine failure. Success

Globaby01. The email address is eniitanemmanuel@yahoo.com. Meanwhile, sorry about the incident with the rain. I believe they are old enough to survive, though you may need to increase the intensity of the heat supplied. Finally & most important, ENSURE YOU REPLACE THE LITTER TONIGHT. Success

@bb life, The thing is that I used the solution in a small scale and it worked, I need to use it on a larger scale befor I can get the info out. Have you started your poultry yet? If not, give me your email and I will forward the project that I put together, based on the cost that I got last year.
Hi Franklin, How has it gone so far? Is V-mix in the market already? Kindly forward the docs to me also, and let me know how far with V-mix. .. agapeiyke@yahoo.com Thank you

bros are you saying i can administer Komorov to the birds now. i have been giving them lasota oral since May last year
..
How old are they? Komorov injection is usually given at week 9 after lasota have been given several times. If u give komorov before lasota, many birds will likely fall sick. Most vaccinations should be done before laying starts.

i wanted you to clarify your first response. the question Eggcelent is for laying birds but the answer you gave is for birds under 16wks.

thanks for the clarification.

if he did not give them before they start laying, it is advisable he do. No need to take chances and play with newcastle disease. But next time, he shud give them before laying starts.
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 5:57am On Feb 13, 2015
FarmTech. Let us be clear here. The birds were given Lasota orally about 3 times & subsequently injected with Komorov at 16 weeks, after which they have been orally vaccinated at least once a month. The issue now is that the efficacy of the oral (Lasota) vaccination has dropped since advent of the heat stress. The question here is; "what are the pros & cons of injecting birds who are already laying with Komorov in this hot weather given that oral vaccination isn't producing the desired result?"

what do you mean by lasota not working. are you experiencing drop in production?.
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 10:35am On Feb 13, 2015
jamp. Yes. However, you may wish to include other signs of VACCINE FAILURE (this time Lasota) such as smaller sized eggs, dotted eggs, greenish excreta, among others.
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(m): 12:02pm On Feb 13, 2015
Those signs means sickness is somewhere. If there is a lab nearby, go for lab test, else you can give them antibiotics like tylodox with multivits. Don't vaccinate in that condition.
..
Tackle heat stress by placing ice block in their water. More here http://en.engormix.com/MA-poultry-industry/management/articles/heat-stress-in-poultry-t2186/124-p0.htm

Hi folks, Please, is it advisable for me to lease a land to start my poultry farm? Also, is there anyone with the contact of a vet or a consultant in Warri? Waiting guys...
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 2:10pm On Feb 13, 2015
davidzfarm18. Sorry about your loss. That's was quite massive. The heat stress is becoming rather unbearable. Gumboro can be quite deadly. One can still play around with Lasota and other oral vaccine, but not Gumboro. Better luck next time. FarmTech. Thanks for the piece above. Will look into that.

No, we said dont vaccinate sick birds or birds that appear sick. Treat them first and when they are healthy, vaccinate. In hot weather, vaccination failure is very common. Find a way of minimizing the effect by following the link I shared above. If you do that your vaccinations will likely succeed. There are also tests that can help you determine if vaccination was successful or not. It's called serological test. You do the test before vaccination and repeat it 3-4 weeks after vaccination. The result will tell you if vaccination was successful or not. That way u can avoid huge loses like the poster above. But in nigeria animal labs seem to be scarce or costly and small holders may not afford it. My birds are still laying. As for restocking, I want to wait to know whether this bird flu thing will spoil market. I also experience small egg sizes but I don't know whether it's from farmsupport or myself. They once suffered from heat stress, mycoplasma G. and when feed was scarce, we have to feed a little bit less. Change is constant, so there is nothing wrong with testing other hatcheries, but I think all birds have the genetic capacity to lay larger eggs if you manage them well. The problem sometimes may be from we farmers.
