Just like the NYSC, the intention to establish the NDA was good, but the practices have made a mess of everything.
One retired officer, a Lt. Col I met recently said that the army has lost its way in Nigeria beginning from the admission practices at NDA. Because of quota system, you have some with a score of 490 out of say 500 from Anambra, Imo, Delta, or Oyo sitting in the same classroom with someone who scored 20 or 30 out of 500 from Katsine, Zamfara, or Kano.
Or worse still, someone who had successfully bribed his way into the class room could be your class mate.
My friend made another good point: once you're admitted through corruption and compromise of the scores, you always remain corrupt, and cheat your way till retirement! Only in Nigeria.
Compared to other national defense academies established about the same time in other nations like India, Brazil, and Malaysia, our NDA is a sorry sight.
Your post is the plain truth.

The quota system has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society and has all but destroyed it.
Merit is sacrificed for mediocrity and we end up with people that are not qualified occupying positions that they should not be in.

I cannot but help make an analogy to Buhari who got into the army with a recommendation instead of a WAEC certificate.

A lot of people might not know this but in 1964 when the NDA opened, amongst that first batch of 62 cadets where people like General Oladipo Diya,General Dogonyaro, Admiral Allison Madueke and commander Emeka Omerua. The past Chief of Army staff,Lt General Ihejirika graduated from the NDA in 1975. Cadets who pass out are commissioned as 2nd Lt's. The NDA used to be an all male institution but when GEJ became president,he changed it so that female cadets are now accepted. It's not easy being a cadet,I remember drill and parade in NYSC camp mentally destroyed many of us graduates and that was child's play compared to what these guys go through everyday at the NDA.

OP,the NDA is more or less a primary schl when compared to the American defense academy. We 've not got there yet.

Oya Mr. Wet Towel. Name your own profession, institution, school, vocation for comparative analysis.

And after going through this rigorous training, due to corruption their leaders trap them to death in the hands of some rag tags who do not have 1% of the training this guys have?

Hats off for the Nigerian military

The NDA was established in January 1964 as a reformation of the British runRoyal Military Forces Training College(RMFTC), which had been renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) on independence. The military institution trains the officer corps of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force. The initial class was only 62 cadets, and trainers were mostly officers in the Indian Army. The NDA grew to an all Nigerian training staff only in 1978. In 1981 itself began training bilateral training of foreign militaries. In 1985 the academy commenced offering undergraduate programmes to Military Officers In Training and now also currently offers post graduate studies both for Mscand Ph.Dfor both military and civilian students alike. The central mission remains the five year cadet officer training "Regular Combatant Course". As of 2008, its total cadet class is around 1500.
This thread will showcase the NDA through photos.

Theoretically, the highest rank in the military is field marshal, but usually, only the president or whoever is commander in-Chief of a countries Armed forces can hold this rank. I saw some pictures recently of Jonathan in Army combat gear wearing this rank and it was with 5 stars. A four star General or full General is usually held who ever is chief of defence staff or 'chairman joint chiefs of staff' as it is called in America.

It takes extraordinary military achievement to be a field marshal. General Agwai was the closest army officer in Nigeria to be a field marshal because he commanded one of the largest peace keeping operations in the world in Sudan. He was appointed by the United nations and he is one of the finest army officers Nigeria has ever produced.

You are absolutely, totally so, so wrong. General is the pinacle of a ranking (serving) member of the armed forces. The rank of Field Marshall is a symbolic, ceremonial, temporary honour given to non serving members invited or visiting the theatre of war or significant operations such as Heads of State, retired top ranking servicemen, etc.

If Agwai was visiting front line troops today (of course he won't do so in mufti) in some special advisory role at the bequest of the government he will be ranked a Field Marshall (to establish a clear line of seniority between him and the serving generals) for that short period of time.

But in all seriousness.I cannot consider the present insurgency signifgicant enough to bring in old war horses.

Pls not about flowers or aesthetics, where are the defences?

It is shameful how boko animals over run our military installations-we should be concerned about fortifying defences around all our military installations.

Every military academy in the world does that. Its all about who you know. Most military officers always push their kids or family in for legacy reasons and others get in thru who they know. That is just military politics nothing more. It is not a Nigerian thing. The quota system is even more important in a very heterogeneous Nigeria.

Many high score students usually get in by enlisting and not thru the academy. The academy is always reserved for the students that knows someone for the most part. That is how the military establishment works.

Please take everything you have said back. The problem is you are looking at everything from the point of view of a Nigerian, so you biased. Some countries do what you have mentioned but a lot don't.
