I know 'm supposed to write a qualifying exam, abi? Can I do that with my degree in Mathematics or is it still for people with a degree in actuarial science?

It would help if u state what ull like to know about the field. However, u can go to http://www.actuaries.org.uk/ for more information. If u have particular questions about the field that you couldn't find answers to, just post it here and I'll see if I can help.

My issue now is what's the next step seeing as I didn't do actuarial science. Am I to write an exam or just start looking for jobs in actuary firms? What do I do next?

Mathematics is a strong fundamental in actuary, you should be in a good position securing a job in an insurance firm. My advice is you take up the chartered insurance institute of Nigeria (CIIN) exams or the UK actuary body and at same time job hunt.

I know, very well. Wanted to become one myself. Ask your questions, will answer

Meanwhile, let me begin by asking questions

1. What level are you and when you likely to graduate
2. What is your GPA now, and what do you expect to graduate with

I can really help you, if you want cheesy

So I'm sure you must have done a bit of desktop research on what it entails to qualify as an Actuary; the time, money and sacrifices. If you are truly passionate about pursuing an Actuarial career then register for the exams. Since you have a strong mathematical background, you could start with the Probability& Statistics exam, Financial mathematics and Economics. This should not be too difficult for you and will give you the confidence to prepare for the other papers in the CT series. Alternatively, if you have the cash you could pursue an MSc in Actuarial Science from one of the Institute's accredited school in the UK. If you perform well on the Master's program in any of these schools you stand to gain exemptions in at most 8 papers at the CT levels.
With some papers passed, it wouldn't be difficult to get an Actuarial role in an Insurance company or an Actuarial Consulting firm in Nigeria.
@Mayo: Her plan is to pursue an Actuarial career not to get an Insurance job, so I don't quite agree with your advice on taking the CII exams. Actuarial job isn't restricted to the Insurance industry.

Yababoy, 'm looking at qualifying here in Nigeria,is that feasible? All 'm seeing is uk
Re: Advice On Being An Actuary by Yababoy(m): 8:49am On Oct 15, 2014
It's very feasible and means you'll have to follow my first option. Register for the exams, start with the courses you are familiar with and you'll be fine. Your mathematical background puts you at a high advantage.

Wondering why you ignored my message.

As yababoy said, you can do the SOA, CAS and IA from here in Nigeria, except the last stages I think, but don't expect to earn the same salary as your peers with exact same qualification abroad.
Re: Advice On Being An Actuary by Onyiclara(f): 11:27am On Oct 15, 2014
Didn't ignore ur message o,i actually sent u a mail. @yababoy still don't know how to go about it. What 'm seeing on soa website is ASA, CERA and FSA. Can u put me thru? Forgive my ignorance
Re: Advice On Being An Actuary by Yababoy(m): 11:51am On Oct 15, 2014
It's either you are writing the UK (IFOA), USA (SOA) or Canada (CAS) exams. These are the popular ones. Each of these bodies have the qualifications they award. The awards you listed are granted by the SOA. You would first need to choose which of the exams you want to write and in what order. I actually tried to simplify things for you by guiding you on the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries exam track and by providing the link to their website where you can get all the information you need.
I hope this is helpful.

The truth is that presently in Nigeria an actuarial career is confined mostly to the insurance sector & maybe the PFAs. In essence, that the reason I brought up the insurance job idea.

The demand for actuary is not there as Nigeria just has a small number of actuary which makes the ROI maybe questionable but would be great to acquire for the future as the insurance sector especially is experiencing reforms.

The MSc Actuarial Science in the UK is actually great as it may land you a job in UK where actuary is more value and the ROI very good.

I do not totally agree with you. There are also Actuarial Consulting firms (though very few) that are always on the lookout for good Actuarial students in Nigeria to employ. I will also tell u from my personal experience that the demand is there, remember the supply is very very low in Nigeria, so the few ones are very highly demanded. With the reforms, the demand will only go higher and I'm sure u can infer what that means for the few professionals now.
As per the MSc in Actuarial Science in the UK, I'm sorry to tell u that ur chances of getting a job in the UK after the MSc is about 1% as the visa rules have changed. Companies will be willing to employ u but they would be limited by the visa rules. However, u have the option of moving to Canada, USA or Australia afterwards.
My final word is that the MSc will give u a headstart in the Exams because of the exemptions, if u decide to look for work experience in other countries its fine and if u also decide to come back to Nigeria to work a bit u will also not regret it. I am speaking from very personal experience.

@onyiclara .I believe you have been educated enough about actuaries by these replies from responders. However, for your information, you can now study for actuarial exams here in Nigeria as a 'center for actuarial training', a division of TAF Consulting Group (Actuaries) is starting soon. You can visit this link http://tafconsult.com./what-we-do/training-development/education/exam-support?id=53 or call 09030009963 for more information or better still PM your phone number to get more info.

Please I will like to know how I can register for exams(SOA) in Nigeria, and how will I sit for the exam... I'm a current undergraduate student of Mathematics, I'm in my third year. I need to start those professionals exams now...

And which one would you recommend SOA or ACCA, I know actuary is about risk taking(financial mathematics) and acca is like ICAN. Can I take both together... Or which would u think will pay in the long run... I don't plan to settle down in Nigeria.

First is to identify what you want in terms of career path, as a mathematics undergraduate you shouldn't have serious issues with any. Yes its possible but definitely not advisable. You can fit into accounting (ACCA), financial risk management (FRM & PRM), investment mgt (Chartered Institute of Stockbroking, CFA), actuary or insurance (CIIN) etc. You in the best position to know which is a good fit.
