is clear you are not in the medical line...antenal visit are done 4weekly till 28week gestation then 2weekly till 36week and weekly till delivery,from the 30th week you start clinical pelvimetry which is where you have to insert your hand to check the birth canal to see if it is adequate for the baby to pass,is done by the doctor or in less powered health care facilities is can be done by an experienced midwife

the question, must it be a man? I'm not any medical person. I'm saying what I know. not everyone visits hospital, the few that go, not all allow strange men insert their fingers in the name of 'medicine '.

Female Ob/Gyns are available in every country but are very few in clinical practice because Obstetrics is One demanding field ...imagine having to go and do a caesarean section at night and having to leave ones husband and children.

This chap Sounds like One heck of a pervert . One thing i have come to know is that nobody seems to care about the sex of a doctor when they are ill. Even doctors too have their wives , mothers &sisters examined by other male doctors . I think lots of people need some growing up to do !

Doctors have been seeing, touching and working on tens, hundreds or thousands of Punnies for years. I'm sure it's no big deal, bro.

That was the only reason I wanted to be a Med. Doctor earlier. But after so many thoughts, I reassured myself that one healthy punny at home (my girl's/wife's) is worth more than millions of sick/unhealthy Punnies (other men's girls/wives) in the hospital. I then decided to study Philosophy, thereby, having the mental, the psychological, the ethical, the intellectual and most of all, the philosophical power and acumen to analyse these things from afar. grin

That practice is still only done in nigeria. Now in cases where pelvimetry is questionable an MRI of the pelvis is done to confirm if the woman's pelvis is suitable for birth. In developed countries doctors dey fear litigation.

I can't help but. Laugh. I understand your fears but what must be done must be done. Without doing a vaginal examination, there is no way to better access the birth canal. Now during antenatal,doctors do pelvimetry for some pregnant women, not all of them cos there are indications for clinical and radiological pelvimetry. So not all pregnant women undergo this.

However, when the woman falls into labour, the doctors must do the vaginal examination to access how dilated the cervix is and to know the state of the baby. We don't usually do this alone, we also invite a female chaperon to be with us mosttimes.

One fact is that there are more men who specialises in obs and gyn than women, so chances. That you will see a male doctor attending to yur. Wife is very high, remember it's labour and most time you don't mind the person attending to you. All you want is to deliver an healthy baby to an health mother.

By the way, I can't count the vaginal examinations that I have done during antenatal and labour, and it's even the smell of the liquor that make me to run away from becoming a specialist in O&G.

But doctor of a truth while inserting your finger in the woman's down below, do you feel any sensation on around your cucumber?

Female cervical examinations is not a routine protocol for prenatal patients. It only become necessary during prepartum when is within the due date of delivering. Is done to measure the cervix preparedness for passage.
When an expecting mother starts having contractions, the frequency and severity noted, it becomes important to manually insert fingers into the Virginia orifice to measure dilation. If not sufficiently dilated, hormonal medication like oxytocin(pitocin) is injected to stimulates the uterus
to contract, thus inducing parturition.
Other occasions for Virginia examination are when associated with deceases processes. And Virginia suppository is indicated.

@OP: an OB/GYN checks a woman during pregnancy (and in general) to ensure that she is not having complications and that mom and baby are healthy. Some procedures are invasive when necessary. How do you think a woman feels during such examinations? Definitely no pleasure comes from this. More like discomfort, awkwardness, shame, nervousness over results, painful, etc. During birth, it will be even more invasive! My advice, love and support your lady. She will really appreciate your encouragement and care. Good luck.

Well, I've noticed most Obs/Gyn drs in Nigeria are MALE. Even if you want a female obstetrcian, you may not get one tongue

Most female drs don't want to specialise in obs/gyn I guess, cos its too stressful thus the scarcity.

Abi... There's a certain doctor who had been toasting me like forever. However, one day I ended up in his hand for a chest examination. In the examination, I was required to strip down to my bra, which I did. The first thing I noticed was he looked away when I removed my shirt, and all through out the examination, he was so detached. I now understood the meaning 'clinical detachment'.

After the exam, he turned away while I put my blouse on. This is someone that has been looking for how to 'enter the place'.

During examination, we cease to be humans (for lack of a better phrase) to them and we become test subjects.
