As President Goodluck Jonathan, is expected to visit Enugu State today in continuation of his electioneering campaign tour of the South-East, the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged elder statesmen and traditional rulers in Igboland who are scheduled to hold a town hall meeting with the president, to elicit answers from him concerning a number of issues affecting the zone.

A statement issued yesterday in Enugu by the party’s spokesman in the South-East, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, and made available to LEADERSHIP, tasked the president to explain why the Enugu Coal field has remained dormant four years after he promised to revamp it.

Also, the APC demanded that President Jonathan should explain to his audience what happened to the N923million, N1.7billion and N1.1billion budgeted to carry out 3D Seismic Survey for Enugu and Gombe Coal belts, as well as why the 2nd Niger Bridge which is under construction has been designated by his administration as the only federal toll bridge.

According to the statement, President Jonathan, should also explain some aspects of the last National Conference report.

such as the recommendation of 50 years jail term for corrupt public officers, and the provision of funds for mineral oil exploration, which merely needed policy formulation and implementation by the federal government.

The statement further tasked the president to explain the delay in declaring a trade free zone for the South-East, as well as why Enugu airport is yet to become a truly international airport.

The zonal chapter of the APC frowned at the deplorable state of the federal roads in the South-East, including the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road, the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway and the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, saying the president should provide answers as to why they have remained either dilapidated or uncompleted.

The Igbos are known to be very smart, industrious and intelligent. It is therefore unbelievable to see this same set of people always found wanting when it comes to playing high-tech politics of Nigeria. Personally I see it as an indication of a people who do not trust one another.

Apart from political appointments which at best benefit the appointees, there is very little the Igbos have gained from Jonathan presidency especially in the are of infrastructural development.

At the rate the political game of Nigeria is being played, the Igbos may not be able to produce a president till 2027 at the earliest (and that is if GEJ succeeds in rigging his way in this 2015 election) because most likely the North will produce a president from 2019 till 2027. They had the opportunity to speak in one voice and align with APC during the merger of the main opposition parties and negotiate for the VP slot so that they'll have a chance immediately after GMB's presidency but their naivety beclouded their judgment.

It is even possible that the Igbos will not produce a president in another 50 years if they play their politics of bitterness forgetting that you need alliance and sacrifices to win elections. This is what Okorocha understands and it is what the many other Igbo leaders fail to understand.
