Tade pulled up in front of his house by 9am the following morning. He had tossed and turned on the bed the whole night. By 6:30am, he was already at Abere junction, on his way to ibadan. The question that kept bothering him was how Wande got the courage to even talk back at his sister and mother, not to talk of slapping or hitting them. Mama and Titi are troublesome, that he knew. But he never knew Wande could have the nerve to defend herself against them.

By the time he got to Iwo road, he had already made up his mind on how to deal with the situation. Whatever happened, Wande had to apologize.

"Welcome sir." Uche, the day guard greeted him as he drove through the gate. He quickly put off the ignition and stepped out of the car without bringing his suitcase. His blood felt hotter than heated oil as he quickly made his way to the door.

Inside, Ngozi cooked while Maria the saturday maid cleaned. The two women discussed the quarrel between Titi and their madam in hushed tones.

"I really missed o." Maria whispered.

"My sister, you missed." Ngozi replied in like manner.

The timer on the oven went off. Ngozi brought out her pan cake from the oven. The room smelled wonderful. The sound of the door bell startled her, causing her heart to jump in fear. Their gossip had prevented them from hearing Tade's car drive in. She brought her hand to her breasts, then signaled to Maria to check who was at the door.

Looking through the peephole, she was shocked to see Tade looking unkempt and angry. She quickly opened the door and knelt to greet him.

"Good morning, sir."

"Welcome sir." Ngozi joined her

"Where is your madam?" He asked without answering their greetings

"She's still upstairs sir," answered Ngozi, nervously.

Tade took a step towards the stairs, then paused in his stride. "Where is my mum?"

"She's in the guests' room sir"

He decided to go check on his mother and sister first. he knocked on the door and waited to be invited in.

"Tade, how are you?" Mama Johnson greeted somberly.

He looked furtively around the room, no sign of his sister. "Where is titi?" He asked

"She has gone to get bread from the junction." Mama said and continued folding her wrapper.

Tade sighed. "I smelled pancake in the kitchen mama, why bread?"

Mama sat down, a deep sigh escaped from her. She placed a hand on her chin and appeared in deep thought. She looked at her son and shook her head. She was dressed in iro and buba. She appeared ready to leave.

"Your wife has made this place hell for us, we can't eat her food." She finally said.

"Tell me what..." He started saying but was interrupted by Titi's arrival

"Good morning, brother." She greeted, holding her bread behind her.

"How are you, titi?"

She shrugged her shoulders, "fine o"

They narrated what happened. Only forgetting to add that titi slapped Wande twice before she retaliated. Moved to anger, Tade rose and headed straight to the room he shared with his wife. Mama and Titi exchanged glances and laughed as he rushed out in anger.

Wande sat in front of her dressing mirror in the elegantly furnished bedroom. Head bowed down, she reflected upon the events of the previous night. First, the kiss and later the slaps. She dabbed foundation on the dark rings around her eyes. She was dressed in a simple knee length flared gown and a pair of fancy slippers. The twins sat on the king sized bed, surrounded by different toys.


She waited patiently for Ngozi to come and inform her of Mama and Titi's departure so she could go downstairs with the twins.

Suddenly, she heard the creak of the door. Ngozi, she thought with a faint smile around her lips.

"Wande, what kind of craze came over you yesterday?" Tade asked without saying good morning.

Wande was shocked to see her husband stand at the door that early.
"I thought you were coming tomorrow. How was your flight?"

"Wande, why did you beat up my sister?" He asked, this time impatiently. He moved closer to her and stood over her. "Answer me." He barked at her.

Wande rose on her feet and attempted to hug him. He shoved her so hard she fell back on the dresser chair. She stood up. She narrated the story to her but Tade's face showed he didn't believe her.

"You went out with a man, mama and Titi challenged you, you fought them." He said

"I went out with a man, yes. I went out with a friend, Segun. He bro---"

Before she could complete the sentence, he landed her a dirty slap. The impact was so much she fell butt flat on the tiled floor.
"That's for going out with a man" with that, he turned his back and walked out of their room.

Wande rushed after him. She caught up with him at the foot of the stairs.

"I have had enough of your BS, Tade Johnson. I can no longer tolerate it." She cried. Tade shrugged and walked to the set table.

"Then what?" He asked as he sat down to eat. "Then what, I ask you?"

Ngozi ran upstairs to get the twins when she heard them cry. The twins, Josephine and Joseph, looked frightened. Wande walked up to them and picked them up one after the other. She rocked them gently in both arms and placed them back gently. She wiped her tears and walked back upstairs. She picked her handbag and got her babies bag packed.

"Ngozi, get dressed. We are going out." She announced. Mama and Titi were already holding their bags and waiting for Tade. Without saying a word to mama or Titi, she walked out of the house holding Josephine while Ngozi held Joseph. She needed to clear her head.

AT this juncture, I'm shut of word, or let me say I don't wanna ulter any bad and ungodly ulterance to this family of Tade




Anyways, I entrust you with wande's misery, as I know you wont let her sufferness, be in vain

Chapter 17

The evening sky clouded, heavy downpour threatened, as Tade made his way to his G-wagon and climbed inside. He started the car and within minutes, he had left his house behind. Wande and the kids have not returned to the house since morning, despite his calls and warning. He had called Mrs Williams and all her friends who insisted she was not with them. He was furious at her new attitude of daring him.

He slot in a CD in his player and selected 'African queen', one of his favorite oldies that always lifted his mood. As he hit ring road, his cell phone rang.

"Charles," he said, flipping on his headlights.

"We are waiting for you," charles said into the receiver.

"Almost there." He ended the call and headed to the new outer ring road, cutting it at Mobil junction to avoid the challenge hold up. Within a few minutes, he was with the guys. The whole place was packed full despite the threat of heavy rain.

Tade, Josh and Charles sat at thE pumps bar and pepper soup joint, along the express. They each had a bowl of pepper soup and half empty bottle of big stout in front of them. They spoke at the top of their lungs, but the music blaring from the loud speakers drowned their voice.

"I think it was wrong of you to slap your wife." Charles, the cool headed among the trio spoke.

"That's true," josh cut in. "you know Titi can be funny, and Wande couldn't have hit her first."

Tade's stomach clenched, he sipped his beer in silence, wiped his mouth and spoke without any remorse. "I can't stick that woman again. I know Titi must have slapped her first, but why hit her sister in law?" He asked.

"What if she files for divorce?" Charles asked

"Divorce? Better! I have cars, houses, a company, sixty percent of her father's property, the twins as collateral..." He ranted on while his friends looked at him.

"In your name?" Charles cut in

"Well, some in mine, some in my name and Bola's..."

"Don't be too sure with these rich folks, bro. They have the best lawyers and you may end up losing out." Josh advised. He waved him off and smiled. He had perfected his game, Wande was going to be outsmarted, he assured them.

"Bola and I have plan B"

"Do you really trust Bola?" Charles suddenly asked

"Yes, do you trust her?" Josh added

Tade thought for a brief moment, then nodded, "I trust her one hundred percent." He assured them.

"You have no reason to suspect she may be playing you?" Charles asked calmly again, as he tried unsuccessfully to bite from the big chunk of meat in his hand, spilling pepper soup on his friends in the process.

He wiped his mouth and sipped stout. "Sorry, guys! This feels more like horse meat sha." He complained

Tade wiped his shirt with tissue and washed his hands. He was trying hard to enjoy himself.

"Look, I'm not telling you how to live your life. But in my book, you don't trust a woman like bola. You don't leave certainty for uncertainty." Josh told him

Charles said nothing. He only shook his head and smiled.

Josh knew he was wasting his breath. Tade wasn't listening. Josh didn't want to be there. He didn't want to be part of Tade's game. But he knew he couldn't do anything. He was the driver. Unless he resigned his position, he was a part of it all, and that worried him. Sometimes, he wished he could unload the secret that weighed in on his heart.
