Congrats Mr. May God perfect his good works in your life.
Its encouraging to know that despite the hardship and recession, people are still getting their own jobs.
To those still searching for their greener pastures, don't give up yet. Difficult times are just a phase, it will come but it will also just pass by.

Our fears and comfort zones only limits us. Been in this contract job since 5yrs ago after graduating from the university. 3yrs into the work, I felt enslaved, underpaid and I saw no career growth. I desire change. I kept reluctantly searching for better opportunities. I also overlooked some job vacancies on the notion the companies are not big players like my erstwhile employer.

Within me, I needed change but I never knew such change must come with a price not on a platter of gold. The global oil fall saw us out of the oil job; surely contract staffs are always the first to get hit in time of recession. We stayed at home with no pay nor notice of our retrenchment.

I dusted my CV, pimped the living daylight into it. Prayed upon it. I decided to leave Nigeria labor market and lunch into deep (international). I joined (applied to) 23 oil and gas recruiting sites across the globe. I also subscribed to 15 recruiting/outsourcing firms. I pimped my LinkedIn profile, updated carefully; paid for 2nd level connection and made new connections in the industry. I connected with recruiters. Had friends recommend me on my linkedin profile. I optimized my profile on google such that if you are searching for people with my expetience especially in Nigeria, my will profile will be in first 5 result. There was results. There was no day I didn't drop an application. I ransacked the Internet. I learnt a lot about job search in this period of my joblessness. I discovered things I will share latter. Have you ever seen a job post you know 100% you are fit for it, yet they throw away your application. You receive a regret mail, without even getting to interview? I Will tell u why.

So after a week, I started getting calls from recruiters oversea saying they saw my CV on so so website and cares to know if I am Interested in a job in so so company and country. We will talk and negotiate terms. Calls came after the other till I got one that is with full expatriate package. I jumped at it.

Now I am back to my feet. To God be the glory. This period has not been easy I came to wonder how people with mouths to feed have stayed longer. Teachers especially. Chai!!! I say to you Never give up my friend in same situation. Help is on the way.

Packing things.....Relocation tinz....Oluwa lifting me up even in recession and redundancy. Father do same for people in this pitiable situation, if not for their sakes,, do it for the sake of those young innocent mouths and elderly mouths they will help. Amen!!!
Tenacity! Please is there possibilities for those without previous work experience? I mean fresh grads? Could you help document the processes how you did it, the sites you used etc?

Thanks

Thanks for sharing your powerful testimony.

However you need to understand and emphasise the role of systematic, dedicated job search played in your success. God cannot bless NO effort. He has NEVER done so and He is not about to start.

Can you imagine a world where absolutely NO ONE does nothing, everyone simply WAITING for God to bless them shocked

I pray your testimony opens the minds of others to the sure & certain heavenly reward for smart hard work- Amen!

I think I can see the processes you took and I can do that with a bit of research on my part.

But do you think this your style is possible with someone, a fresh graduate , with no work experience except a few minor jobs here and there? Were you recruited based on your previous experience and will you undergo any training before you that the job? Please help me clear this questions.

The problem with Nigerians and black people as a whole is that they are damn too secretive and never willing to help or share beneficial information.

The average black man feels by sharing his success details, he will go hungry.

OP, BE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND STOP GIVING HALF BAKED DETAILS. Bear in mind I don't need your details as I am employer of labour and not the other way. But for the benefit of those in your shoes.

Tell them facts and how they can help themselves instead of flipflap stories they can't make use of.
I really don't see anything secretive here. He has given a summary of his journey and he promised to share some helpful hints later.

Even if he doesn't share more, I'm satisfied with all these information. OP has made us realize:

1. At times, you need a big fall to know where you stand:

People that say every cloud as a silver lining do know what they mean. There are times one just needs to fail as failure at times equips one for the ultimate success. Never see a challenge as a stumbling block but a stepping stone

2. Adequate Strategic Planning can change your story:

It's conspicuous that the OP knew what he wanted. 90% of fresh job seekers in Nigeria don't know what they want. But is it totally our fault? Obviously NO! Most of us just apply anywhere, anytime & anyhow simply because the whole system itself is anyhow.

We are not creative with our job search. We don't plan and strategize, we just see openings and dump our CVs. Some of us don't even bother checking out requirements these days. We just throw our CVs everywhere *lol*

OP indirectly said: Proper planning & Right strategies can help

3. If you really want it, Give it your all

Truth be told, most of us are too lazy to do all the OP has done. Connected with about 25 foreign Oil&Gas companies, Updated his Linkedin profile and even paid for a higher package, registered with about 19 outsourcing firms etc. (He has just taught us that we might need to go the extra mile to get our dreams achieved).

4. Don't get a Job, Get a Career

This is another problem Nigerian job seekers have. Most of us (especially fresh graduates) don't mind the job role, all we want is the pay. But how can you blame us when the jobs are so scarce like water in the desert. This has made it very difficult to get choosy ( shebi na when you see 3-4 jobs you go say you wan choose; wen some people no dey even get one offer in 2 years).

Don't work as a marketer for one company for one year and work in Cash & Teller unit of a Bank for another 2 years and later, you work as an analyst in a Laboratory for another 18 months.

If we can build a career, get a kind of job role we will be happy to do for another 20 years. Then getting a bigger & better offer along the line won't be an issue.

I'm sure the OP built a career in a particular
Oil&Gas function, reason why he could get a better job in that line. So, OP taught us another thing

5. “Relevant” Experience matters

Read my lips and pronounce RE LE VANT!

I was discussing with some job applicants for a Contract Cash & Teller position in a Bank. The bank said some successful applicants will work in Cash&Teller while others will work in Customer Service Unit. I argued that the Customer Service Unit is way better than Cash & Teller as I don't see any gain of experience in Cash & Teller. They were against my view, they argued that at least they will have 2 years work experience after working two years in the Teller unit.

I asked them, do you want to apply for another Teller job after the two years? They said NO but they will use the experience to apply for another job. I told them outright that I can never employ you as an experienced hire for any role other than Cash & Teller. (Btw, Cash & Teller should even be for OND holders; I think Nigeria is in a mess)

Companies that ask for relevant work experience know what they need. Most experienced hire vacancies I see always read:

2-3 years experience in Sales
Minimum of 5 years experience in Quality Assurance etc

OP has indirectly taught us that Experience is vitally important in getting bigger & better offers. BUT when you are garnering your experience, make sure it's the RELEVANT one.

You took the words right out of my mouth! A lot of youths are very lazy to read and assimilate the reason most of the points the guy highlighted were left out! How can someone be asking for more details when they were succinctly spelt out here?
This method was also what played out in my situation with the grace of God and I moved from 6 figure to 7 figure! Job searching these days requires a lot of creativity and hardwork. Take the extra mile to polish your cv and if you do not know how then pay a good recruitment consulting firm to do it for you...this is specifically for those with job experience.
Use your money to develop yourself by acquiring skills, trainings both foreign and local as they go a long way! Do not always wait on your employer to send you on one! I went as far as acquiring a training from LBS and was about to pay out of pocket before my previous employer then decided to pay for it, alas that was the exact attraction my current employer saw. Some of my colleagues then went as far as going to Havard Business School to acquire trainings in their field and I can say it is paying off for most of them. With determination, self confidence, hunger to learn and acquire more knowledge trust me there is no how an employer can "shakara for u"
