That said, I think naija's case is somewhat similar to a guy with body odour, or someone who lives in a stuffy room. You wouldn't know how repulsive it is till someone tells you. That is the story of naija. You can't really understand what is wrong with naija until you look at it from the outside - and that is perspective I always bring to the table.

Also, this generation is lost and I doubt anyone will be able to find them (us). The focus should be on the next one, and how to build the future of naij with them. However, it has to start with the system and institutions in that country...but none are functioning right now.

Furthermore, the scam thing isnt about just the minority, it is as Nigerian as the naija Churches I see everyday out here on every street corner and afrobeats. The so-called resilience is overrated since folks from all third world countries and the minorities in every country are like that. You can't be more resilient than Mexicans, Ghanaians, Eastern Europeans etc.. These folks do slave labour with pride just to get by - true story.

Regardless, I was just countering ya assertion about "impeccable record" cos I definitely can't see any. Nigeria is just like any other Black Country out there albeit with population explosion.

Our sense of supremacy over Africa and Africans stems from our drive and passion for excellence ,which the average African derive no pleasure from provided they have a few goats and cows or monkeys or etc (the list goes on).If Nigeria and indeed Nigerians compare themselves to other African states,then we would undeniably be on a path of retrogression .

The problem with most Nigerians, especially, the ones who live in western world is that they have become wiser and better informed than the rest of Nigerians living in Nigeria.

They come with the negative, doomed and pessimistic views with an attitude of false sense of enlightenment.

When I was a kid, India used to be officially the poorest country on earth.

China was so wretched she literally feeds on only locally produced rice.

Today these two countries are giants, technologically, and economically. And all the forecast for them are bright from all reports.


From 1994 Nigeria has been making strides positively.

DO YOU KNOW THAT BETWEEN 1999 TO THE PRESENT OUR MIDDLE CLASS HAS GROWN 600%?

Several years ago we don't have individuals like dangote or strong firms like zenith, oceanic, glo and other brands that have scattered all over Africa.


Innoson has started automobile production in Nigeria and other major brands like Nissan, GM have set up plants as well.

The freedom of information bill has been passed and Nigerians now have access to vital and sensitive information accross all strata of government institutions and agencies. That is what I call an institutional/legal framework for fighting corruption.


There's still work to be done no doubt but the future looks brighter than stormy. We have become the first African country with a .5 trillion economy with a booming movie and entertainment industry.


Koffi Annan, the formal Ghanaian UN Secretary general was in Abuja a month ago. When he left, he told the world that THE DESTINY OF AFRICA IS IN THE HANDS OF NIGERIA.

It's just sad that some "smart" Nigerians don't even have a clue and defiance to see everything NIGERIA IS AND CAN BECOME.

I respect that. I also know about the growing middle-class in naija, and I'll always laud that cos the middle-class is the back-bone of every society. And I hope it isn't just a bubble, since you can't really measure growth indexes properly, when it comes to Nigeria. So, work has to be done regarding the base of the economy, with industrialisation drive, agriculture, and production sector.

Also, the 80s and 90s were dark periods for black folks all over the world, not just Nigerians. I'd even say Nigerians had it better when you start listening to refugee children from countries like: Congo DR, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Angola, Uganda, Liberia, Somalia et al who came out here as kids. Stories that will touch the heart. I had a female friend from Congo DR back during my Uni, who came here as a minor (age 6/7) - when you hear story, you'll shed tears. When the war started, she and her family were part of the refugees taken to Nigeria. And from there, they moved to North Africa, and later to France - before arriving in the UK - horrific story. Then I knew a few child soldiers from Sierra Leone back then, who came here as refugees. African Americans and the crack era, with crack head mothers, crack babies, and mass imprisonment. It wasn't pretty out here as well - I grew with friends (naija mandem as well) who started robbing folks at the cash-point with shanks, just to get by and help with bills at home. Everyone has a story to tell, hence the whole superiority facade with a lot of Nigerians always crack me up. No pun intended cos I was cut from the same cloth as well.

Hopefully, things will get better, and the country will start living up to the potentials, it had on paper at independence. However, the mentality and system have to change for that to happen. Also, there has to be a new re-awakening - with proper institutions.

You're right but if you live in thé West you'll hate the ruling class , the elites and even the masses of this country and this is one reason why I have said that it is good to experience both to help you make a better judgement and not the usual skewed judgement that comes from some of our brothers and sisters in diaspora.Though I have this feeling that their anger towards Nigeria was borne out of pure love for the motherland considering her resources and what is obtainable here and compare it to the standard of living.
Nigeria is a goldmine and those with an eagle eye are beginning to see those potentials and all the Government needs to do is to strengthen on our little achievements ,build more sustainable projects and make education compulsory for every child.
What we need right now is to industrialize this country on a massive scale and grab the African markets by the balls by shipping cheap finished goods.Then our economic woes would be over and it would be a win-win for neighbouring African countries.

Truely, our brother's in diaspora should be constructive in the criticism and not to kill whatever is left of the moral of those that are optimistic and ready to weather the storm for Nigeria.

Chinese in diaspora stole a lot of technology from the US and brought it home.

Our kunta kinte brothers in the West often rot away there and never make any positive impact back home except return in yuletide and other festive period with convertible cars, fake accent and jewelry.


I have a deep seated hatred for our rulers but it is the resilience of the Nigerian people that has been laudable.

Nigerian firms and companies now dominate virtually the west African region providing goods and services. I don't want to be too specific about countries so as not to encourage ego post from foreigners on this thread.

Nigerian banks have virtually taken over west Africa and are expanding to east-central Africa. Our government is still lagging behind though as our political awareness has been to accommodating and low our political class get away with a lot of corrupt acts.

But the future remains very bright, our political awareness is increasing and the value of opposition is becoming clearer. Soon our political leaders would become more accountable for their actions while in office.


Foreign investors are beginning to flow in, if the government would follow through with infrastructural development we will become the Japan and China of Africa.

If you mean Gollywood here is a post from chocolatecandy that explains this very well: about ghanaians using only mixedraced actors .....The truth is (from my observation) is that most of the movies u see with these talentless mixed raced ghanaians are produced by nigerians such as frank rajah and pascal amanfo( frank rajah actually discovered about 90% of these mixed actors ). the old ghanaian movies before nadia buari,van vicker, majid, juliet ibrahim etc were not like that. they had little or no mixed raced casts. But its funny how our movies only started recieving much attention in Nigeria and Africa when we started using these mixed guys and we both know why and its not bcause they are fantastic actors.

when u watch movies made by Shirley frimpong-Manso (adams apples, perfect picture), leila djansi (ties that bind), kwaw ansah ( love brewed in the african pot)etc u'll notice their casts depect the average ghanaian who is either darkskinned or light not mixed . my point is that only a few movie producers use them and unfortunately its only those movies u see.
