Why Do Nigerians Love Cms, Plugins And Frameworks A Lot? by directonpc(m): 7:32am On May 01, 2015
Just wondering why our 99% percent of our websites and applications are based on some wysiwyg cms or framework. The sites with high traffic in Nigeria are mostly e-commerce sites and blogs running on one platform that was developed by some white guy somewhere.
Even simple non-dynamic html sites are built from templates in Nigeria. We are the Giants of Africa and this practice is won't up our game in the web development industry if u ask me.
Is it that we are scared of coding or we are dull?

*NL isn't perfect but am happy it's not just another WordPress blog. I pray the owner can get a good team to make NL more social.

I dont use CMS much but sure i do when necessary.

trust me this is not just a Nigerian thing, its every where and it all boils down to "business" and "client".

A client approaches you, he wants an ecommerce website, you charge him 1.6Million to build a secure cool ecommerce. same client approaches another developer who will use magento (a very recommendable CMS) and the guy charges 200k with evidence of his works which are all doing good. what do you expect?

BTW check online...even many US, Canada, Australia etc sites are mostly Wordpress. the big once who are not CMS are maybe once owned by BIG companies who can pay millions to get a site.

Talking about frameworks....i dont think there is anything wrong in using a framework.

@OP The first question you should ask yourself was what was the idea behind Framework and CMS.

tongue its not just web development, it runs through in everything we do in Nigeria. clients don't wanna pay so much for a service "they feel" should be cheap.

It is wrong....

Bootstrapping is the actually good for start-ups, you don't wait till you have all the money or coding prowess to start up on your idea.

The problem lies in remaining where you are for a long while.

In the case of NL, ever heard of Simple Machines Forum?

Some people are just too lazy to get their hands dirty with the nitty-gritties of coding. You'd be surprised to know that many so-called programmers still employ the procedural approach to programming, when OOP has made everything easier. People just want to make money fast without paying their dues...it's for this same reason that corruption's rife here in Nigeria. Well, if you wanna roll with the big boys in anything you do, you have to pay your dues.

As a programmer, I ignored cms and focused on coding, that's cos I want to learn from the scratch, but in reality, clients wants it fast..........and cms is d answer!

For me, I don't have that time to start learning some code writing.

I read Geography and Planning first degree... the job didn't come as expected, I decided to learn Web design while doing a Pgd...

When I discovered that the web design market is saturated and jobs aren't forth coming as envisaged, I decided to acquire Architectural design skill while the job hunting continues.

And right now, I'm thinking of quitting my present job (cos of the pay) to afford me enough time to learn the GIS software thing to boost my chances as well.

You see, no time.

I love the CMS, Extensions and Plugins... They make it simple.

It all depends on the client.

Nigerians don't know the worth of web development. Labour is cheap here in Naija. They price peanuts.

That's an unfair statement to make, you use something to get the job done, also by white guys what does this mean ? you do know that White people use our tech too, Check Precurio, I contribute to a CMS platform called ImpressPages and I get mails from people outside Nigeria to help fix some of the plugins i created. that mindset doesn't belong in the Technology space. Why rebuild the wheel when it's been done already.

I use Frameworks and CMS and also extend and create plugins for CMS/Frameworks, so what's the big deal ? use frameworks and CMS if u must they were built to be used. so i should Session Plugin/Authentication Plugins from scratch/Flash manager,Asset Bundler, Dispatcher just because I want to prove myself. please it's not realistic. This is modern development only thing i would say is even using this frameworks pple still should learn the underlying tech.
