It boils down to what you want. It is not a Nigerian thing, there are also many Nigerian sites developed from scratch. 1 Like |

From my experience, most Nigerian clients can't afford to pay for a custom made cms...they prefer cheap ND also the time frame dey give sometimes is unrealistic |

maximunimpact: this is what i do: Learn the language 90% then use CMS 1. PHP i know php to a alrge extent so i use Yii Framework/Processwire even you can't use this without knowing PHP 2. JavaScript i know this lanuage more than my ex-gf so i use Dojotoolkit/AngularJS you can't use Dojo if you don't know Javacript Angular is easy but when it comes to complex use like Monkey Patching an existing service/factory that's when you need to know your JavaScript 3. Java I know Java 50% which is why i am jumping to Spring Framework Its about time saving, no company and i repeat no company is going to pay you to build soemthing from scratch when it exists already because: 1. They don't trust your code because who's using it 2. There's no community or an amount of people using your code.\ No company wants to code a project half way and discover its trash when other CMS/FW have proven records. Stop thinking this way bro i work in a IT Company there's no Framework/CMS and Enterprise Solutions we haven't touched. Time is money. work for an Enterprise environment and you will see the difference in how tech are selected. 1 Like |

I use to be a lover cms until I met this website developer who I contracted to build me a market place website. Against my wish he insisted that he would build it from scratch. Believe me he has been on it for five months now but the functionalities are good. I didn't regret because 1. The whole architecture is mine. 2. it's not subject to any change occasioned by forces beyond you like the owners of the cms. I am loving the feel even though it is in the test running stage. You will need plenty of patience and money to accomplish this. But I think it's better. 1 Like |

I guess time and the ease of doing things is responsible. Moreover, it's cheaper and businesses are looking for ways to minimize operation costs. So, CMS comes in handy. .............................................. Want to learn how to setup premium bulk sms websites on your own and make money doing the same for others? CMS( Content management systems) is a framework developed by some group of "fellow developers using the normal programming languages any web developer will use to create a site any time which are php, html, css, jquery and others". Plugins extend the fucntionalities of your website. plugins do not restrict to cms only, when you want to add functions to your website, "the code you write to put that function on the website is actually a plugin". In wordpress, the package of these snippet codes is called plugins. if you want to use a jquery plugin for example, you will need to add the "code" to your website. Whether you use a CMS or you code from scratch using the web programming languages, html, css, php, mysql, jquery and the rest depending on what you want to achieve, its all the same "CODES" and ''WEB PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES" you will use and apply. Most foreign websites, yes very secured ones are on cms, so whether foreign or local, there is no difference. All that matter is knowing the languages very well to even tweak the CMS to your own taste to achieve your clients needs. The point is DON'T EVER RE-INVENT THE WHEEL! Unless there is something outrighly different you want to offer. CMS or Framework is not a bad idea. If you have ever used Microsoft Word to type a letter, then you have used a CMS. If you have ever used Photoshop to crop your picture, then you have used a CMS. Just imagine developing your own Word Editor like MS Word just to type a letter. The problem we should be looking at is: Our inability to make CMS, Framework or plugins better. We should not just use wordpress and joomla basically. We should learn how to unleash the powers of wordpress and joomla by forking them and turning them around to achieve amazing things. Mashable.com was using woprdpress. Mashable is one of the biggest blogs in the world. It was later that they developed a custom cms for their blog. New York Times blog is running on A CMS (woprdpress). The official website of the government of USA is running on a CMS (drupal). Even facebook (http://newsroom.fb.com/), google (http://www.gv.com/), mozilla (https://blog.mozilla.org/), and blackberry (http://blogs.blackberry.com/) are using a CMS (wordpress) in their blogs. Why didn't they develop a blog cms for their blogs? That will not important since there is a good one on ground. Here are 22 GREAT WEBSITES running on a CMS (wordpress): http://techcrunch.com/ http://www.newyorker.com/ http://www.bbcamerica.com/ http://variety.com/ http://www.sonymusic.com/ http://www.beyonce.com/ http://blog.ebay.com/ http://blog.us.playstation.com/ http://www.blogs.xerox.com/ http://www.bata.com/ http://stores.bestbuy.com/577/ http://qz.com/ http://product.espn.com/ http://lumiaconversations.microsoft.com/ https://social.ford.com/content/fordsocial/en/home-page.html http://fortune.com/ http://newsroom.fb.com/ http://marksandspencerforbusiness.com/ http://www.gv.com/ https://hbr.org/ http://larrykinglive.blogs.cnn.com/ http://blogs.blackberry.com/ NOW THE BIG ONE!!! 30 Insanely Awesome Websites using WordPress as a CMS SEE AWESOME WEBSITES HERE: http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/awesome-websites-wordpress-as-a-cms/ |

I believe you have summarized it concisely. "Why reinvent the wheel?" Personally I felt the post didn't warrant a response but since you bothered to make one I will simply like, and endorse it. I'd also like to add that these racial comments often sound like they came from a place without knowledge or information. 90% of websites EVEN some united states government sites use CMSes. But because we are black we should just suffer and "do our own"... Don't drive cars ride donkeys instead, dont uses cellphones train pidgeons or trek like "the buhari traveler" to deliver 30 second d messages, because the tech is western? Come to think if it, why do u even use their computers "do your own na!". If there is a need to write custom code we are more than capable of writing our own code but optimizing the efforts of thousands and millions of programmers in the Open Source community is the prudent way to go! pcguru1: 1 Like |

I started off by coding; sometimes I use Firework to create my own conceptualized template then I embed the code to make it interactive but then came these one minute CMS (Content Management System) based only sets of web developers; the ripple effect is that clients who don't know much now want more for less I had to re-strategize & join in the use of wordpress & Joomla. Though I find it a bit limiting to my creativity but the clients are happy. |

directonpc: Nairaland was built on the SMF framework. I guess alot of tweaks got it to where it is today. Why reinvent the wheel when you can build on exisiting ones? BBC and whitehouse.gov both run on a stripped down version of drupal with alot of tweaks and modifications. It also has alot to do with convenience, end-user proficiency, agreements and ultimately budget. You don't drive a passenger from lagos to abuja just because you know how to drive whereas he is only willing to pay #3000 for the journey. 2 Likes |
