THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS PEICE! I CANT AGREE LESS. WE HAVE AN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM THAT IS OUT OF TUNE WITH MODERN TREND IN ALL AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS ARCHAIC! THOSE WHO DEVELOP CURRICULA ARE MOSTLY LIVING IN THE PAST. YOU HAVE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. THERE IS NEED FOR TOTAL OVERHAUL OF THE SYSTEM.

NO INNOVATION. NO CREATIVITY. THE MANAGERS JUST DONT WANT CHANGE! DECISIONS ARE TAKEN BASED ON SENTIMENTS AND PERSONAL GAINS IN POLICY AND PROGRAMMING. SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE TOO MANY SUBJECTS TO HANDLE. WE REFUSE SUGGESTIONS TO EVEN LEARN FROM OTHER COUNTRIES PARTICULARLY IN AFRICA. ....

The sad part is spending 4years+ learning nothing. An apotheosis would be as in the case of some of our engineering graduates. After spending 5 years, majority still won't be able to apply knowledge acquired during undergraduate study to real life situations. What's the point then if you ask me? Majority even end up not practising. Afterall "passion" won't pay the bills so I really do not blame them.

Until we get it right, Until the government does something substantial & enduring about the educational sector, Until our leaders stop sending their kids abroad to school & see for themselves what it is like to school here in Nigeria, the
re won't be any progressive change.

Nice write-up L. ero15.

Thanks, bro.

Some of your points are valid others not so much.
Each country tailor their curriculum to their own needs. We shouldn't compare the years spend in school between countries. The british spend 3 yrs in universities because it suits them while Americans spend 4. Each country have their own reason for doing so.

Your number 3 point, not so valid. Its not called 'jack of all trade' I think the right term is flexibility. The world we live in is very vast and we can't be rigid living in it. That's why the curriculum infuses so many aspect into the university program, students need to know what going on in other areas outside their major courses. Most times these are areas students wouldn't normally look into. Like for example in my year one in school, I did a GST course in science and technology where some engineering principle where explained. I'm an art major with no business in engineering, but my studying of that course broadened my mind.
did you study in uniben?

This is true... Either you school or not, all you need is God's blessing in whatever you do. I know of First class physics student since 2008, no job till now, I am a living witness, no certificate yet (due to many set backs, thank God all is cleared now), but I am going places n getting paid enough with the self-acquired skill I honed. In a nutshell, going to school isn't the main thing but knowing what you are doing and be more prayerful about it.

It is man's place to pray but God's place to answer! cool

Instead of the OP worrying about duration, he/she should worry about QUALITY!

Even with the duration, the quality is still nothing to write home and abroad about. Countries like Germany has quality education even with 3yrs in a university.

I'm in 200 level studying Philosophy. I learnt Pascal, Fortran, BASIC and the very useless UCB Logo 3 years ago. I also learnt PHP, ASP.NET, JScript, AJAX, Action Script and a little bit of photoshop and graphics design. I am currently learning Java but i plan to learn Python, C++, C#, Assembly language, Machine language and maybe one day create my own programming language (though i have structured, restructured, written and re-written what it will look like a thousand times, i still think i am no where near accomplishing that dream yet).
I see no reason why we shouldn't learn whatever we want to learn but i also see no reason why we should be forced to learn the things that are almost irrelevant to us. Something has to be done about it by the incoming administration.
I do well on my own prerogative learning graphic utility softwares such as CorelDraw to the extent that I designed the first certificate in use at Police Training School, Oyin-Akoko in Ondo State, but when I tried learning C++, Objective-C and the likes, I regretted doing so. Some of those compulsory courses are vampires that prey on your CGPA.

Pure waste of time. I studied engineering. 5yrs after school I never use calculus to solve any real life problem. One of my prof doesn't know where an alternator can be found in his vehicle. Sooo bad.
If you've not used calculus to solve any problem, the problem is with you not the educational system.

As an engineering student/graduate, if you don't know the importance of calculus then you should burn your certificate.

Below is an excerpt from a site about calculus. After reading, take a deep breathe and see if calculus is really important.

Calculus is the language of engineers, scientists, and economists. The work of these professionals has a huge impact on our daily life - from your microwaves, cell phones, TV, and car to medicine, economy, and national defense.

Credit card companies use calculus to set the minimum payments due on credit card statements at the exact time the statement is processed by considering multiple variables such as changing interest rates and a fluctuating available balance.

Biologists use differential calculus to determine the exact rate of growth in a bacterial culture when different variables such as temperature and food source are changed. This research can help increase the rate of growth of necessary bacteria, or decrease the rate of growth for harmful and potentially threatening bacteria.

An electrical engineer uses integration to determine the exact length of power cable needed to connect two substations that are miles apart. Because the cable is hung from poles, it is constantly curving. Calculus allows a precise figure to be determined.

Mr OP, I beg to disagree,
4 years is not too much and it isn't a waste of time.

The Nigerian standard may be poor, but it has nothing to do with the curriculum. In science and engineering, the foundation has not really changed much in the last 70+ years. The laws of physics, Chemistry, and maths have changed so what are you changing the curriculum to?

2) You complained about irrelevant courses but I tell you, there's no profession in isolation. Because you never have to use some courses didn't mean it isn't necessary. Also there's the small matter that at undergraduate level, most people don't know what they're going to do with their lives, that's why the undergraduate degree is more breath oriented.

I was once like you wondering why I had to go to school when I should have just going straight to NIIT but now, I wish I had studied computer science.

PS: if there's any computer science undergraduate reading this, take your courses seriously ( algorithms and data structure, compiler construction, operating systems, discrete maths). They may look boring and uninspiring now but if you ever get into practising, you'd be glad.

I insist that all the grammar and theories which we waste time on won't take us anywhere.let's come over to real, practical and relevant learning which are more effective and time saving.

Let me start with a practical example; if you have an O level certificate from Nigeria and move over to the US to study for a bachelor degree in Nursing, below is the minimum number of years it would take. I also make an illustration with someone who finishes high school (secondary school) in the US.

First, for someone with o level SSC;

1st year first semester........... Biology 1 with other 2 courses
1st year second semester..........Biology 2 with other 2 courses (Biology is prerequisite for biology 2)

2nd year first semester........Anatomy & phys 1 (bio 2 is prerequisite)
2nd year first semester.........Anatomy & phys 2 (Anatomy 1 is prerequisite)

TWO YEARS GONE ALREADY. THEN YOU ARE ACCEPTED INTO THE NURSING PROPER FOR ANOTHER 3 - 4 YEARS

Case #2
This second case is for someone who finished high school in the US;

This is how it works, while in high school he gradually starts taking Advanced level courses- Biology 1 & 2 and also Anatomy & phys 1 and 2 that way, he/she won't waste additional two years after high school (secondary sch) taking these courses. Only highly motivated individuals are able to take this route. The rest would just have to wait till after high school (secondary sch ) to take those required prerequisite courses, and that would mean another two years after high school (secondary school).
Thereafter, they could be accepted into a bachelors of nursing program to complete another 3-4 years, now add that to the previous two years and you have roughly 5years of post secondary education.

Now, when I hear people saying it take less than the usual 4 -5 years of post secondary school education to get a bachelors degree I wonder where they got that information from.

As per reform, I'd like a situation where our secondary school system is upgraded to issue A level certificates, instead of the current O level, thereby leaving the time spent in universities to be just three years. This way, those who wish to focus on their crafts after secondary school, without sweating through the stress of the uni, will have a brief idea of what most other fields entail. Besides, they'll also get the basic idea of what theories underpin their chosen field.

BTW I must add that I'm all for free primary and secondary education in all parts of the country.

for employers, duration... Cos u must be below certain age to get their jobs. For employees, or potential employees, quality. Though they too wouldn't want to stay that long in school.
