Do these names sound familiar: Pablo Zabaleta, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Garay, Lucas Bigilia, Fernando Gago.

These are players who won the 2005 FIFA U-20 world

Great answer. I wanted to mention that initially. Does that mean Argentina is the only country getting it right?

Don't worry. Watch out for this same flying eagles. You will get more than 5 top senior players from them

Mali in dire straits

Mali under-20 national team is currently in the French city of Toulouse preparing for the upcoming Under-20 Fifa World Cup in New Zealand.

Working conditions have been very difficult according to the team’s coach Fanyeri Diarra, who says the group is in dire straits, which are affecting their groundwork.

An initial camp schedule to be held in Mali’s capital Bamako was cancelled after the football federation said funds were not available for the project.

Diarra says some of his players including the captain are still stranded in Mali because of passport and visa issues.

Friendly matches lined up as part of preparations have been cancelled, and it is too late to organise other meetings, according to an official.

The Under-20 Fifa World Cup kicks off on May 30 to conclude on June 20.

The junior Eagles finished fourth at the African Youth Championship help in Senegal in March to qualify to the World Cup.

Diarra says he will continue to make do with available resources in the hope that the authorities will intervene before their trip to New Zealand.

Mali will open their campaign against Mexico on May 31 before subsequently facing Uruguay and Serbia in Group D.

I really hope so. This team is very good with the added advantage of being truly young. As for your question, a study(if hasn't been done) needs to be done as to why promising young stars fade away quickly. Argentina is not alone as Portugal once had a golden generation with at least 9 players from their 1989 and 1991 U-20 winning squads starring in Euro 2000.

Kanu Advises Keshi To Use U20 Players

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has called for the immediate integration of members of the current Flying Eagles team to the Super Eagles.

Speaking to SL10.ng, ‘Papilo’, as he’s fondly called, argued against the notion that the players are too young to play for the Super Eagles, and says the players are good enough irrespective of their young ages.

“If you see a player who is 16 years and you know he’s good, he’s good,” Kanu tells SL10.ng.

“Look at Wayne Rooney for example, at what age did he start playing for Manchester United? When I joined the National Team I was also very young, so the age doesn’t matter, but what the person can do,” he further says.

The former African player of the year goes on to counsel Stephen Keshi to give the players the needed exposure in the Super Eagles.

“The coach should use this opportunity to expose these young lads because the more they play with the experienced players, the faster they grow and improve.

“We don’t have to wait until they are 30 or 25 before they’re called to the Super Eagles because if they’re good, they’re good. You have to try them and if they are not good at least you’ve given them the opportunity,” he concludes.

I think Mali want to waste that slot , when they know they are not ready they should have forfeited the slot to country that is ready ....going to the World Cup without preparation is just a waste of time . Africans need to wake up .

How will they play when they are with the German U20 preparing for the World Cup? You're missing his point. If they have as many as 5 players picked from the team, then the team is not that bad. It simply means that our team is better and more compact.

Thank u for shedding more light for him to understand the point I am trying to make . The World Cup will start in less than 10 days , if our boys beat the Brazilian team . This same guy may call it a fluke .

Mali Names 21 Players For World Cup

Mali coach, Fanyéri Diarra, has completed his list of 21 players for the 2015 Fifa U-20 World Cup.

Coach Diarra who has reportedly had a troubled preparation by lack of funds from the Mali Federation has been camping his team ahead of the New Zealand tournament in Toulouse, France.

Top Mali midfielder, Adama Traoré ‘Noss’, who was blocked from participating at the Africa Youth Championship in March by his French club LOSC Lille, joins the list of eleven selected foreign-based players.

Diarra kept faith in all the three goalkeepers who made it to the AYC but chopped off Aspire Senegal defender Bourama Doumbia for Mohamed Diallo in his final list.

Three other players - Moussa Bagayoko (Black Stars), Moussa Sissoko (AS Police) and Mohamed Guilavogui (Montpellier/FRA) who participated at the AYC lost their places in the Mali U-20 World Cup party.

Mali are housed in Group D with Mexico, Uruguay, and Serbia. They play their opening game against the Mexicans at the Otago Stadium in Dunedin on May 31.

Panama dream Argentine upset

Panama are fancying an upset against favourites Argentina to lighten up their campaign when the 2015 Fifa U-20 World Cup starts.

The May 30-June 20 tournament brings together yet another group of the world’s best future stars has the Concacaf representatives housed in Group B with the Argentines, Austria (June 2) and Ghana (June 5).

The 2015 Fifa U-20 World Cup in New Zealand has been projected to reach 170 million television viewers across 100 countries.

After touching down in Hamilton with their final squad on May 7, Panama became the first participating country to touch down in New Zealand for the World Cup. They were involved in the recently ended Five Nations pre-World Cup Series and are warming up with other arranged friendlies.

Coach of the side, Derek Cannavaggio is already dreaming of a win against giants Argentina on May 30 which he believes would light up the entire Panama.

"If Panama could beat Argentina in the opening game I can't even begin to tell you how the press would react," Cannavaggio says.

"It would be historic, front page news. We would win our first match ever at U20 level and it would be a dream come true.

"Panama eats and breathes football. Everyone back home is following everything these boys do.

"The build-up has been phenomenal; the qualification through CONCACAF was brilliant. These are the future stars."

With their squad mainly from the country’s professional league, Panama are hoping to make the knockout phase for the first time.

The Panama U-20’s moved to Taupo for a week’s training and are back in Hamilton where they are scheduled to play a friendly against Uruguay on May 20.

Diarra banking on previous experience

“New Zealand is a wonderful country, even if it is a very long way from home,” said Fanyeri Diarra, the coach of Mali’s U-20 national team, in conversation with FIFA.com. “We don’t get the chance to go there every day, so we need to make the most of it.”

Diarra should know what he is talking about, having made the 17,000-kilometre journey from Bamako to Auckland once before in his career, when he took charge of the Mali side that contested the FIFA U-17 World Cup New Zealand 1999.

Now 57, he is hoping the experience he has accrued in the 16 years since then will serve his charges in good stead when they take on the rest of the world at New Zealand 2015.

“We didn’t manage to make the second round on that occasion,” he said, casting his mind back to his first trip to the Land of the Long White Cloud. “The draw wasn’t kind to us, though. We found ourselves in a very tough group with Germany and the two eventual finalists: Brazil and Australia.

“Even so, we managed to hold our own, drawing two games and losing to Australia, which cost us a place in the next round. I think we gave a good account of ourselves and we hope to do the same thing this year, while trying to go as far as we can.”

The signs are that Diarra’s wishes could well be fulfilled. Much has changed in the last 16 years in Malian football, which has made great strides, with the likes of Frederic Kanoute, Mahamadou Diarra and Seydou Keita helping to take Les Aigles into the continental elite, thanks to back-to-back third places at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2013.

As well as the senior team’s burgeoning reputation, Les Aiglons also have no little talent and an experienced coach to guide them.

“I’m not the same person I was in 1999,” explained Diarra, a former Mali defender and team captain. “I’ve grown a lot in the job, thanks to everything I’ve been through, both at club level and in international football, and at youth and senior level. At the time, I’d only been coaching for eight years, but I’m a different coach these days.”

Discussing the task of improving on Mali’s performance at the U-17 world finals 16 years ago, he said: “It’s not so much New Zealand 1999 that rankles with me as the CAF African U-20 Championships, where we failed to reach the final. We achieved our objective of reaching the World Cup but we want to go even further and win matches and titles.”

Quiet optimism
Like their coach, his U-20 charges have also gained in experience, albeit in a shorter timeframe. Held in Senegal, the African finals provided them with lots of valuable lessons, as did the pre-tournament training camp in Toulouse.

Diarra is also looking forward to the return of two or three key players who missed the African finals, among them highly promising Lille midfielder Adama Traore, who already has a handful of full international caps to his name.

“We’re banking on him a lot,” said the coach of his star asset. “His club promised to release him for the World Cup.”

Diarra is also delighted to have first-choice goalkeeper Djigui Diarra back to full fitness following his injury in the lead-up to the African Championships, where Sorry Ibrahima Traore deputised for him. Even so, the wily coach refused to say if the returning Diarra will be reinstated in the starting line-up: “I haven’t decided who will be in goal for our opening match against Mexico.”

It is little wonder that Diarra should be giving careful consideration as to who dons the gloves in New Zealand. Having picked up valuable experience with Stade Malien in the CAF Champions League, Djigui Diarra has long been regarded as one of Malian football’s most exciting prospects. That said, his replacement barely put a foot wrong in Senegal, keeping three clean sheets in the group phase to give coach Diarra a problem to ponder.

“My team doesn’t have any strong points or weaknesses and it’s pretty well balanced in every department, with a lot of technical and mental attributes,” he said. “We did pretty well in defence in the African Championships and not quite so well up front, which was mainly due to some of the players lacking match fitness and form at that time of the year.”

Coach Diarra knows his players will need to be at their best in New Zealand: “The U-20 World Cup is an elite tournament. All the teams taking part in it have a lot of quality,” he said, pondering the challenge awaiting his side in Group D, where they will face Mexico, Serbia and Uruguay.

Signing off, he added: “We’ll be up against another opponent in the shape of the time difference. It unsettled the team back in 1999, and it’s another thing that I’m wary of. We’re competitors, though, and it’s up to us to adapt to the situation.”

I think the issue of players not graduating to senior team to become pillars is not as straight forward as we think. with Nigeria apart from the age issue delay in finding good clubs willing to invest in their football education is a major drawback.

how many countries produce world beaters at youth level? few and far between the argentine example given was part of the solid foundation laid by jose pekerman remember he was u20 coach of argentina for years so the system not only won trophies but produced more players like cambiasso, di maria to mention just a few. xavi and casilas that won Nigeria 99 how many years did it take them before they won the world cup?. so it takes a while

the reason why I think south americans do so well is that like I mentioned above the system ensures the right talented players are used plus they have historical relationship with a lot of these European club who are willing to take a chance on their youngsters unlike Africans eg Ghana, Nigeria who have allowed cheating through false age declaration to limit such opportunities

I think Nigeria is on the right track now...good youth coaches identifying technically gifted youngsters (emphasis mine) training them in good academy setups ensuring such players get transferred to top European clubs with bias for young players eg ajax barca porto arsenal etc

if I had my way manu would stay youth coach for many years

Bros, your point of view is subjective.

1) How many players from club academies if top clubs have become a hit like Messi since he graduated? What happened to them?

2) How many players from a country's U-20 are up to 5 playing top flight football today?

3) Iheanacho was the second highest goal scorer behind one guy from sweden. Pls where is the guy now?

4) How many stars from previous under-17 competitions are still top today?

5) Chelsea has the best U18 academy in Europe as we speak. How many of the players there will player first team football in the next 4 years? Will they be up to 5?

I can ask so many other questions.

Before you think of foreign coach,

How many standard youth set ups do you have. Or you think oyinbo man will come with his kits and simulation materials?

What is your local league doing about the development of these youngsters or will they be with oyinbo always?

How many of the youngsters play for development. Take it or leave it, they go for the money! No time

Please let's commend Manu Garba and hope for the best.

I rest my case
Am an advocate of quality coaching and I stand by my insistence on QUALITY coaches.
Most replying have not read my reply in full detail.
My suggestion is IF and ONLY IF MANU experiment does not work out should we sit and re-strategies and stop wasting our youths talent that would voluntry learn to be better just like many of you are in school learning to be professionals.
