Kovalenko treble puts Ukraine on top

A superb second-half hat-trick from Viktor Kovalenko saw Ukraine leap-frog opponents USA to top Group A and reach the last 16 of New Zealand 2015 in style. After a tight first 45 minutes the Europeans got into gear, with Kovalenko dominating proceedings and sending himself to the top of the tournament's scorers chart.

Ukraine knew they had to win to find their way into top spot, while their superior goal difference all but guaranteed a top two finish, so there was little to lose for Oleksandr Petrakov's side. They went the closest of either side early on with the first shot of the night, with Vladyslaw Kabaiev's dipping strike forcing Zack Steffen to tip over.

In truth that was the only time either keeper was tested in the first half as both teams were solid and organised, while the reality that a draw suited everybody may have dampened the more adventurous of attacking intentions. Artem Biesiedin's header flashed just wide and later forced Steffen into a routine save, but both teams perhaps lacked the intensity and bodies committed forward to really make things happen.

Because of that, the fact that dead balls were key to the game bursting to life in a two minute period after the break was perhaps little shock, but the quality on show was undeniable. Kovalenko was brought down by Cameron Carter-Vickers 30 yards from goal, and the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder brushed himself down and unleashed an unstoppable curling free-kick into the bottom left corner.

USA looked to have given themselves a pathway back into the game instantly as Pavlo Polehenko was adjudged to have brought down Jordan Allen in the area. But when captain faced captain from the spot it was Bohdan Sarnavskyi who denied Emerson Hyndman an equaliser.

Ukraine raised their game to another level from there on out and Kovalenko really started to shine. Kabaiev was getting plenty of joy down the left flank and it was no surprise when the pressure told there. A great 'under-lap' from full-back Eduard Sobol sliced open the USA defence and his cut-back was slotted into the left corner by their in-form attacking midfielder.

That corner of the net bulged again five minutes later when he made it five goals in the last two games, this time side-footing home after good work from Biesiedin. He left to sound of applause from the crowd and a kiss on the cheek from his coach, securing them a stay in Auckland for the last 16.

EXCLUSIVE: MOSES SIMON REJECTS DORTMUND, LIVERPOOL, FENERBACHE

Nigeria international Moses Simon has told AfricanFootball.com he has turned down several European clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbache and Liverpool in the EPL to stay put at Belgian champions Gent.

Simon, who is currently at the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand with Nigeria, told AfricanFootball.com he wishes to stay at least another season at Gent before he would decide his next destination.

Moses Simon made history with Belgian champions Gent by winning them the Belgian league for the first time in their history.

“Fenerbache, Dortmund and Liverpool were among the clubs who were interested in signing me, but I wish to stay at least another season at Gent before I decide what is next for me,” he revealed.

“I still have three more years left of my contract with Gent, but the league in Germany or England would interest me at some point.”

Simon’s immediate target will be next season’s UEFA Champions League.

“We are all looking forward to featuring in the Champions League after against all odds we won our first Belgian championship in 115 years,” he told AfricanFootball.com

“It’s a big stage for all of us and we wish to make the most of it.”

The left winger scored seven goals after he joined up with Gent in January. It was a performance that saw him as the second best African player in the Belgian top-flight league this past season.

Sokari is a Great Talent - Ikhana

Enyimba's head coach, Kadiri Ikhana has described Flying Eagles midfielder Kingsley Sokari as a 'great talent' after his screamer against Korea DPR in the Fifa U20 World Cup on Thursday morning.

Sokari netted the third goal from near 25 yards out in Nigeria U20's 4-0 win against Korea DPR in their second game in New Plymouth and the veteran coach admits his superb goal was just a tip of the iceberg from the 20-year-old's qualities.

"Sokari has ever been a great talented player. You cannot rule out such touch of goal scoring if we (Nigeria) hope to make a statement at the tournament," Ikhana told Goal.

"He is an experienced and very skilful player. His presence in the team will bring huge boost to the team.

"I'm not surprised he scored such a great goal because he is always hungry to improve on his performance. He is dogged and creative. I expect more goals from him.

Ikhana insists Sokari is an unfolding talent who is capable of powering the Manu Garba's side to glory as well hailed the impressive show of the Flying Eagles and urged Nigerians to support the team.

"I expect him to improve more in the subsequent games. He is a kind of player that learns to do better than he is being doing in his previous games," he continued.

"I believe his best is yet to come and hope to see him helping the team go far in the tournament.

"I think the Flying Eagles had a good game. They corrected most of their mistakes in the first game and already beginning to get their rhythm as a team.

"We just need to be patience with the team, pray and support them. I believe they will make us proud in New Zealand," he concluded.

Nigeria will face Hungary on Sunday in their final group game.

depends on when he turned them down, was it a certainty they wouldn't be in the CL then? And Dortmund has had more CL appearances than newbies Gent, one season off is barely a dent

Just read comments here and I.... SMH.. ..

For your info... The eagles will play for a win against Hungary...
Play for a draw to avoid Germany Isn't that match fixing grin
The rhythm must be sustained... A CONVINCING win against Hungary capped with a clean sheet is the best thing the eagles need right now.

It is foolish to start thinking of Germany now...
Everything should be done to get a win against Hungary.... Anything short of a convincing win?.. . I will be disappointed.

Food for thought...
How about if the Hungarian team bench all their key players and play to lose just so they avoid Germany too..

Again, I ask: what is special about Germany? Are they better than Argentina? Would they have qualified in Ghana's group? Cmon, give me the best and let's see how it pans out.
if you think Germany would have crashed out of that group then you are a joker. This is the weakest Argentina team i've seen in years

Just to douse some tension maybe ironically... grin

This German team is very good... One of the best in the competition so far. The got a frightening efficiency of which the eagles are found wanting.

Their pass completion rate so far is impeccable (My assumption on their games so far NOT opta stats)

An impressive defense line

But something HUGE is missing in the German team.... .

Talk about it after Hungary is in the bag

Quotes of the Day

Quotes: Myanmar-New Zealand

Darren Bazeley, New Zealand coach
I’m incredibly proud of my team. There was enormous pressure on those young lads today and they dealt with it superbly. We put in a strong and very dominant performance in the second half. I’ve got an incredibly great bunch of guys in this side who all work extremely hard. Hopefully we can make history and get out of the group. At the very least, we should have done enough for our goal difference today to give ourselves a good chance of reaching the last 16. We’ll definitely be sitting nervously in front of the television tomorrow.

Gerd Zeise, Myanmar coach
I’m both very disappointed and disheartened, but you can’t expect to win any matches by playing the way we did. Our defence was a disaster – I saw so many mistakes. We simply weren’t ready for a big stage like the World Cup. The only way we could have survived was if every single member of the team played to the absolute best of their abilities, and unfortunately that wasn’t the case today.

Quotes: Ukraine-USA

Oleksandr Petrakov, Ukraine coach
It was a good game, the players completed their task well, that's the reason why we have earned this result. Viktor Kovalenko is an excellent player, who scored three goals today. He had a stress injury and there was a doubt to whether he could play at the World Cup. If he continues like this, he should end as top scorer here. It is a pleasure to be here and it's an honour to play against such great competitors. We wanted to finish first in the group because we have received great hospitality in Auckland and we didn’t want to leave!

Tab Ramos, USA coach
We played a type of game that we normally are not used to playing. It was an open game. We tried hard and did a good job considering that we kept a couple of players off today, like [Rubio] Ruben. We had to go and search for [the result] but I had to take the central midfielder [captain Emerson Hyndman] off, so we weren't playing at full strength at the end. You obviously want to come in first place, but any team we play now is gonna be a good team.

Quotes: Austria-Argentina

Humberto Grondona, Argentina coach
We don’t deserve to be out of the World Cup at this stage. We expected a lot of ourselves and came to New Zealand with high hopes. We were definitely aiming to achieve more than we delivered in the end. We gave it our all today but the ball just didn’t want to go into the back to the net. Now we’ve got to hope for a miracle.

Andreas Heraf, Austria coach
We’ve achieved something unbelievable. We played incredibly good opponents today and fought and worked hard for this point. On the one hand everything that happens now is a bonus for us, but on the other hand there are only knockout rounds left now. Anything is possible at that point so we’ll wait to find out who we’ll be playing and then see what happens. But when you can hold your own in a group with Argentina, Ghana and Panama, there’s no need to hide from anyone and you have every right to be hopeful about the last 16.

Quotes: Panama-Ghana

Leonardo Pipino, Panama coach
We came here with the objective of winning our first match, but didn’t succeed. We are very sad about that. For us, the most important thing is that these players evolve physically and gain more international experience. All of our guys play for local clubs. They are good enough to play in the CONCACAF region, but internationally we lack the necessary experience.

Sellas Tetteh, Ghana coach
Our opponents surprised me today. I was in shock simply because at the World Cup you see such different standards of performance, and today Panama played very well. It was a hard-fought game and the slightly better side won in the end. Now we have to prepare for the Round of 16. Its going to be very tough now and our level of performance will need to rise. We have to try to work on our weaknesses.

There is the principle of '' peak'' in football.. It either work for your advantage or against you.

IFEANYI MATTHEW AGAIN STAYS OUT OF FLYING EAGLES TRAINING

Midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew has again stayed out of the Flying Eagles training ahead of a crunch U20 World Cup Group E match against Hungary on Sunday.

El Kanemi Warriors star Matthew suffered a foot injury during an opening group game against Brazil and he may again miss his second match against the Hungarians.

He missed Thursday’s win over North Korea on account of the injury.

Both Nigeria and Hungary are battling for second place in the first round group after Brazil won their second game on Thursday.

On Friday, the Flying Eagles trained at Inglewood Stadium at 5pm local time, which is 6am in Nigeria.

The training was lively after the 4-0 win over North Korea the previous day and it was for an hour. All players except for Matthew trained under chilly conditions.

we overcame CIV in 2013 too despite the odds against us.
I personally don't think we'll get to meet Germany just like we never got to meet the dreaded Brazilian U17 team that were ripping others apart. Admitted, Germany is easily in one of the weakest groups (in favt, the weakest group) in this tournament with Fiji(debutants) Honduras and the Uzbeks who have little or no pedigree at this stage, so what we could be seeing now are just the perks of being placed in an easy group. If it was Nigeria, Korea,Qatar and Fiji in one group, we'd be 11 goals up too grin
safari now u re talking. these europeans find it difficult to play african oppositions unlike south american teams, honestly germany were handed a very easy group. fiji, honduras and uzbekistan, very cheap teams. we willknow how good they are when they meet stronger oppositions in the later stages of this competition cool cool

worn out as in tired after facing a few tough teams.I am not faithless, just being realistic.I believe in this team but wishing to face one of the tournament favourites as early as the R16 is pure madness. The same thing happened against Brazil when most fans were predicting outrageous scorelines like 5-0 in favour of the Flying eagles.Who knows? Maybe we would have beaten (or possibly beat) them if we meet them at the latter stages of the tournament.By then, the players would have understood each other better and would be too hot to handle for any team.
brazil that i watched was not that strong, agreed they won, but the fault of our defeat lies squarely on the shoulders of the coach and enaholo our keeper. enaholo had no justification to conceed those 2 cheap 2nd half goals whereas manu's change of formation by playing 4 strikers at once therebyexposing our midfield for the brazilians spoilt everything. given the chance again the best result the brazilians would get is a draw. i believe 100% in this team

Wow! A lot of 'thermometer fans' here... Hahaha... Anyway, We don't need ur 'unshakeable' belief in this team... The most important thing is that the boys believe in themselves and know what they can do. It really doesn't matter who in life believes in u coz if u dont believe in urself, u cant win. It's far better to have no one believe in u but u believe in urself than to have every1 believe in u but u do not have the slightest iota of belief in urself.
IF ONLY A LOT OF FANS AND ANALYSTS HERE 'KNOW' THIS TEAM THE WAY I KNOW THEM, THEN THEY WUD JUST RELAX AND STAY CALM COZ THIS TEAM WILL SURELY DELIVER... Mark my words. The Hungarians beta get ready coz we go use them do practice ahead of the Germany game... And trust me when I say this... The germans dont wanna meet us... *big smiles*

What you have done here is called selective argument. Are Argentine players not young professionals? Whereas, most of Ghanaian's players are from academies. Yet, the Academy boys dusted the young professionals and sent them packing. Football is not mathematics. We could avoid Germany and meet Ukraine and still be beaten. There are no guarantees in football.

I say we face the best and see what happens.
