I was chatting playfully with a hausa man just two days ago and he called me Okokporo in igbo. At first, i was shocked and inquired to know if he knew the meaning of the word he used. Then he told me to go and get married so as to start fending for my kids.
The man's brother later told me that the man sells onions in Onitsha and has been in the trade for years.
I have seen several hausa and yoruba men who can communicate fluently in igbo even more than some igbo people. Their only difference with igbos who can speak other nigerian languages is that they hardly speak it amongst themselves.

I noticed that people from other tribes who did business in Onitsha learn Igbo language quickly. I met a Yoruba man in Lagos who was once a tailor in Onitsha and was surprised that he was more fluent in Igbo more than me. In Benue, I met a Tiv lab scientist who use to sell yam at Ose. His own was extreme. He can't make more than three sentence in Igbo without including any of our adage. So I begin to wonder why it is easier for those staying in Onitsha to achieve fluency in our language easily.

The Hausa guy where did you meet him? The guy must have spent most of his life living in Onitsha! Of course I know good number of Alhajis resident in the city.

Chukwu gozie gi nwanne.
A lotta folks here are just being unnecessarily very emotional about their love for alaigbo. They tell white lies and when you try to correct them, they label you an enemy. All this hostility directed towards me is simply because i refused to join the bandwagon of those ignorantly placing Awka above its level. Anyway, nothing anybody says here will stop me from chipping in my opinion whenever need be. I don't believe anybody loves Anambra state more than i do, but i won't celebrate lies. Never!

Pls don't take this too personal, no reasonam...
Lets make Anambra an envy place to others and pride to alaigbo... Other things "away"

Yea. I was told he's been trading in Osha for long.

LOL that word deep for an average Hausa man living here, but for core ones I think they can know more of that...
Anyways we shouldn't allow lies to be celebrated here no matter how sweet...
Hausas learn Igbo to thrive here likewise us up the hill... Simple

That word is Not too deep for someone that has had regular interaction with Igbos. I have seen someone use ofeke and ofo ogori when referring to another person. Don't think that our language is so difficult for someone else from another tribe.

It's probably because Igbo is the main language used in communication especially in the markets.

Shut up, most of them do hear and can speak Igbo very well, go to Awka, Abagana, Nnewi, osha and other parts in the state..
I strongly believe that you're educated and thus civilized. If you can't talk to me in a civilized manner, please don't quote me. I'm not really against anybody speaking hausa as they are entitled to the freedom of expression. What i'm strongly against is a scenerio whereby two nwafors will be communicating in hausa.......this scenerio is regretable and unfortunate. You can never see two hausa peeps communicating in igbo be it in onitsha, nnewi, awka, abagana etc.

Thanks for the compliment and advise but what do you think should be the way forward? 'Cos it is one thing to condem and critisize and another to strategize and build up!
The solution is simple my brother..... Let's be proud of who we are, what we have and where we come from. We must be proud ambassadors of igboland wherever we are found. K'anyi na atapia igbo ebe obuna anyi no. If you see two hausa or yoruba guys on the street of awka, nnewi, onitsha or nkpor, you don't hear them speaking igbo to themselves even if they were born and bred in igboland. So let's go and do likewise.

So
Take it easy bro. Even if an hausa man knows how to speak igbo, he doesn't go about speaking it to his brethren. In case you misundestood me, my grouse is not with nwafors speaking hausa but communicating among themselves in hausa for any reason is what i'm totally against. Peace.

i am not here to ostracize anyone nor beg them to "spy" anyone for me. I am not an intelligence officer that know how such things happen. I am an ordinary citizen that observe what has been going on in Nigeria and the gang up against the Igbo interest in this country. That is simply the reason it hurts me when the Igbo turn against themselves(Abagworo Vs. Chino war) rather than their oppressors. If you have read my posts as you claim, you will see i encourage a wide dissent of opinions because in hearing all shades of opinions, you are better informed about any issue.

Now, when in the middle of discussing issues or how to progress, someone with an apparent Igbo sounding name begins to speak in Hausa because someone disagrees with them, is an unbecoming behavior. The same man with the temerity to curse his brother in hausa cannot dare greet a hausa man in Igbo, talk less of cursing him in Igbo.

Since he likes speaking hausa, i know the hausa revere Arabic so much. Thus, i advised him to upgrade to Arabic which i'm sure will gain more respect than merely speaking hausa.
Talking about Igbo language preservation.Me thinks the Ohaneze folks are getting their priorities wrong ultimately. Our language embodies our civilization and losing the language means losing our civilization and losing our civilization is losing our very eSsence. An umbrella body like Ohaneze ought to make cultural rennaissance and language preservation an integral focus and not the scare time and resources they waste on politicking, back biting and betrayal of group interests.

Buddah,
As usual you come up with excellent ideas.
Anambra does have a huge sand beach on River Niger, but that Anam bridge over Anambra river at Nsugbe or a more suitable site must be built soon. It is also the same area slated for Anam ultra modern city. One hopes the Anam ultra modern city project takes off soon with private sector heavy participation as the Eko Atlantic. Also that bridge to link Onitsha to the new city is built ASAP.

Good news:
APGA wins house of Assembly re run election in Brass constituency II held yesterday in Bayelsa state.
With this victory, APGA now has 2 house of Assembly members in Bayelsa state.
However the most cheering news is that the APGA candidate beat former gov Timipreye Sylva in his own polling unit and ward. The APC candidate who came second is the candidate of the former gov.
Plan by APC to rig out APGA failed when the Returning Officer who declared the election inconclusive by 2am, turned around to declare the APGA Candidate winner by 4am. The same thing they tried doing in Abia state against APGA.
Deacon Belemote the APGA candidate is now a house of Assembly member elect.
Congratulations sir

Not really sha. I would rather say anything from bauchi upwards may be regarded as ugwu awusa. Those in plateau state use hausa as a quasi lingua franca not because they are in any way hausas but because of the monolithic north of the yesteryears, besides do you stay in jos cos u seem coversant with the area.

A point most people here just failed to realise, I was just about to unfollow the thread, this thread and the Enugu thread are the reason I still log into Nairaland, and if I can become a topic sentence for 3 pages, it just goes to show who is needed and isnt needed on the thread.

Because you bear Nnewi1stSon but you have never contributed on this thread since inception, you only look for opportunity to jump into fight with Chino thats why we are not feeling your absence here (I doubt if your from Nnewi actually)

Everybody here had one misunderstanding with someone else because of divergent views but you will always remember your one time opponent used to have something meaningful to contribute here so the enmity will die down .

You only come here to insult us for not traveling to North, if you had made any contribution here dig it out let's analyze, but your always on Enugu thread contributing.

For the time being we don't see you as one of us because you always isolate yourself from us, this is a generic sentiment share by most of us here until you start showing that home is where your heart should really be.

Thank sis, I know those places like the back of my palm, its been long I visited there but from Holy Trinity is a marvelous view of sideside Onitsha begging for a tourist resort to berth there. Onitsha has all it take to host a five star seaside resort where people will be riding the river on speedboats

That stretch of River Niger Bank is not erosion prone, its level with great white sands and undeveloped beaches.

I love tourism that is why I always like to explore tourist potentials of our state.

If you go to Obeagwe in Ogbaru LG they have great stretch of another sandy beach covering large expanse of rive bank.

Imagine a 5 star resort in Onitsha by the Niger River Bank with skiing facilities like these below,
