The South African Parliament has passed the Defence Reveiw Bill. This is a major mile-stone in the SANDF and could be as monumental a moment as when the decision to dis-arm was made in the mid 1990's. If implimented fully, it could (and likely) see defence spending rased from the current 1.1% of GDP to a full 2% - as has been called for by the Reveiw itself and by opposition MP's This will see the defence budget rise to some $7 Billion per annum. The long term (and most important goals) are: The planning milestones are: 1, arrest the decline in critical capabilities through immediate and directed interventions; 2, re-balance and re-organise the SANDF as the foundation for future growth; 3, create a sustainable defence force to meet ordered defence commitments; 4, enhance the SANDF’s capacity to respond to nascent challenges in the strategic environments; and 5, defend South Africa against imminent or dire threat. The short term goals (milestone 1) are: Defence Review policy objectives; development of appropriate force design and structure; right-sizing the personnel component of the SANDF; developing a plan to systemically restructure the SANDF and renew the military education, training and development system. Today is a good day indeed. Picture: Force Deployment/Projection outcomes for milestone 2-4 4 Likes

Henry240: what about us? What does our defence need now and in the future look like? What is our current defence spending? What atio is it with the GDP and is it going to rise, fall or stagnate over the coming decade? |

craziebone:Yes, Nigeria defence spending will rise. MASSIVELY. As your country tries to deal with the punishing BH insurgency. Another reason will be the re-equipping and supporting new systems. |

MikeCZAR: also our politicians may see that vision as a threat to nigerias political standing, and create there own vision. The vision seems like south africa is trying to be an african super power nigeria will most likely check or frustrate this move . i for one vote for the former |

am glad that smaller african countries are upgrading their military to the 21st century ..but wat sub sahara african countries need is to ups their countries economy and indiginous defence and arms project so that those billions going out of the continent can remain in africa....so lets say in the next 10 years we can have countries in africa doing an anual defence budget of 20-30 billion dollars. 4 Likes |

Nigeria27:Nigeria will be tied in west Africa for a while. Her days of intervention are gone. In terms of defence spending Nigeria might surpass SA, as political enthusiasm(SA defence review support) doesn't at all times equate to major changes on the ground. On the military force projection side I don't see both SA and Nigeria having the capacity and capability to deploy forces at a speed and size similar to the French in Mali anytime soon. 1 Like |

craziebone: Our Defence requirements is geared first, towards internal security, then west-africa. Each African region, has a regional power house, sometimes they are 2 or 3 in a region. So no African Country can claim to be a continental power house. Nigeria spent 6( 7 plus loan) billion dollars on defence in 2014, this figure represents 1.6% of GDP. However on average Nigeria spends between 2.5 - 3.6 billion dollars on defence each fisical year, including extra budgetary allocations. Now, this figure is grossly inadequate. Nigeria should ordinarily be spending $10.4 billion on defence, representing 2% of GDP. However this isn't going to happen. The South-African defence review doesn't necessarily mean that there would be an increase in defence spending, rather it is an acknowledgement that the defence force is sick, and the adequate treatment needed to help the defence force recover has been approved by the doctor (parliament), it is now left for the executive to implement the directives. This is a proper step taken. I expect Nigeria's Defence spending to rise under President Buhari, first as a former military man and second by the sweeping procurements he made as the COAS under President shagari. However their are other factors which might mitigate against the rise of defence spending, competing demands, the price of Oil and infrastructure investments. In all, I expect defence spending to rise under buhari, but I won't raise my hopes to high. |
