One thing for sure, Willie Obiano insists on quality work. He also wants Anambra to start building standard dual carriage ways instead of the usual archaic single carriage roads everywhere

That's why we have Local Governments. But it's a pity the local governments in Nigeria have been rendered useless.

LGAs were not rendered useless, they are useless as a tier of government in Nigeria simply because they were created by northern dictators purely to facilitate the siphoning of huge federal allocations to the north. 75% of the 774 LGAs in Nigeria funded through the federation account are located in the north. If the states were allowed to create viable LGAs as stated in a federal constitution , I'm sure we will have viable and effective LGA system.

It is important Obiano sets up a special unit to undertake that task in Onitsha. It falls into his domain. Onitsha can expand later, but for now, let us clean up.

Let us demolish unsuitable dwelling, street light, clean the markets, even rebuild them, we are paying and doing this in Lagos, why not Onitsha?

It is only a blind person that cannot see the potential of Onitsha as a gold mine.

It's still a local government function.
Onitsha south generates a lot of revenue to cater for these

This is cool. I guess this is the first water project that is being launched in the state. What I like about this man is he is really concerned about touching the lives of the masses directly unlike the previous administration. The transport scheme, salary increase, the newly launched medium business loan scheme and water project shows this. Second tenure is almost a done deal for obiano

I think this new agency should be an arm of ANSIPPA to cut cost and boost the strenght of the organisation?

Obiano Flags-off ASBA, Disburse Funds to MSMEs

History was made today with the Flag-Off of the Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Fund Scheme by the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano at the Governor’s Lodge Amawbia.

Some beneficiary firms engaged in bakery & beverage production, PVC pipe manufacturing, poultry & fish feed production, production of steel & associated materials, and production of aluminium cooking pots received their cheques at the event.

The Managing Director/CEO of ASBA, Mr. Clement Chukwuka‎ confirmed that these funds are not free but are being provided to beneficiaries at a flat rate of 9% without hidden charges.

U are right but this is Africa and the problem that I have with their local government is that, they will see it as a means to enrich themselves.

A council commissioned by Obiano to perform specific task with deadline will be more efficient and less corrupt.

When dey are done, he commission another for a separate task.

See the way the work in Awka is going, that is the type of seriousness needed in commercial Onitsha and Industrial Nnewi.

Proper town planning.

In that case, LGA funding for Onitsha will be scrapped to finance the new commission,
Because that will be too much recurrent expenditure funding both entities.
Can't state governments task the local governments?

Wat magic will they perform that hasn't worked so far. People in those local government want to make money u know. We have limited funds and a lot of work to do in the whole state. Obi have set the ball rolling, Obiano needs to turn the next page for the next gov in 2023 to continue.

Cities like Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi need more than local government. They require actual state involvement like we saw in Lagos. Wat is the problem with Onitsha? Lack of paved roads, pedestrian side walks, street lights, trees, sanitation, covered gutters, law enforcement agency, maintenance agency, road marking, support for businesses, community/recreational park, housing etc.

In return the government get money from tax, rent, traffic violation penalty, create jobs, interest on loans to small and medium scale borrowers, the gains of a proper regulated city are endless. Just go and ask the Lagos Gov.

Onitsha has all this and more. Similarly Nnewi as an industrial city and Awka which is service/technology based.

Ok

Wat am saying basically is that even though we give attention to every locality, we need to mark out Onitsha in particular for something big. Bigger than Lagos.

Perhaps our generation will commence and handle the Onitsha project and that is why the olders are dealing with the localities. They might not know wat to do with Onitsha and the vision for that city.

Even with that, the localities(every local government area) have to be seen as a producing unit that benefits the state rather than a burden on the state. U have to look at them as contributing something, being industrialised to create a society of stock holding communitarianism. If a village has the right soil to grow rice, then that is the local industry. If they have oil, it is their industry. Some might have car plant settle there, pharmacy or technology.

U need to know all the factors of production that are present and deploy them in a way that maximises profit and create a complex economic unit that see the net value of every village go into billions, just like they have done in China. Every locality will be known for their valuable commodity, industry and contribution. They will be valued based on their Gross Domestic Product that will a later translate into the state internally generated revenue.

Our local government are still at an infant stage and really should be seen as mere coordinating centre for a post war Marshal plan the east never received in 1960s for redeployment of every available factor of production for rural and urban renewal.

The local government should operate as some kind of building society aiding the communities to attain optimal production capacity. While investors are welcomed for the employment benefit they might provide to our people, the local government can become the number one community investor agent. Coordinating land usage and building 4 to 8 story housing estate for maximum capacity and save land. (10 storey tower and more too) Since our people are champions at building ground to 3 storey building in the localities. Provide morgages for those that will need help.

Regulate public services like police, fire brigade and ambulance. E.T.C

That is just it, Onitsha will expand from its present size into maybe half a state of the proposed Adada State from Enugu. Think of it that way. A modern global city with a completely integrated transport network. The City will have its own unique architectural style characterised by high rise skyscrapers(10 storey to infinite) and ultra-modern edifice of 4-8 storey flats and house.

The beauty of Onitsha is that we can build it using satellite image of a map of its exact size and even drive around it or ride on trains using architectural apps. It will be the number 1 Commercial capital of not just the east and south but Nigeria/Africa. Onitsha will be ranked amongst the global cities. The future of alaigbo is to hold the igbo population in their localities with urbanisation in rural setting (small towns) whilst we build global cities, one of two is Onitsha. The other should be in Enugu.(a state carved out of Enugu)

Read my first post directly above. I gave details on that and den come back to the one you are quoting. Onitsha I have in mind is a global city. U might want to research that terminology. Remember I said half of Adada, that means there is another half of the city.

The beauty of our time is that we have technology to do the impossible. Nobody expect the venture to be easy but a journey of a thousand miles starts with a step.

If we go by your thinking, we will be siddon look at global cities. I can show u a picture of wen present Onitsha is better than New York but time, planning and determination, changed the scenario.

those areas - onitsha, obosi, nkpor and co already has the buildings and the pattern in place. we should be looking at how the old looking buildings can be renovated and painted, perhaps a legislature to make certain sections of the city to paint and roof in the same colours thereby making it look like housing estates, the covering of all the drainages and using interlock stones on most of the inner streets for durability and aesthetics.

i have quite a few ideas but alas, undecided undecided

I have typically noticed that it is our people in USA that understand that building basic infrastructure is more important than trying to replicate new York city. This realization often comes with traveling and living abroad especially in a place like USA that has multiple levels of great cities.

I have the same pain when people talk about replicating Lagos in the SE or replicating Onitsha in Nnewi or Awka. it all goes to show they have missed the whole lesson on sustainable cities.

Many average American cities that are not the huge ones such as (Atlanta,New york,Boston,Los Angeles,Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago,Washington DC,Baltimore) have just every amenity, working public utilities and ability to support business than the mega cities. Therefore, there is no need to replicate Miami in Jacksonville because whatever is obtainable in Miami is also obtainable in Jacksonville. Therefore, replicating flawed mega cities is just the worst type of mindset.

As Odenigbo said, putting in the BASIC infrastructure in a planned conducive city is all you need. ofcourse, the idea of building business parks which Obi started in Onitsha then stopped is an excellent tool used by small American cities to provide standard office spaces within designated areas of the city to enable businesses to easily find lettable office space to set up.Some may want to use central business district, it's fine. but it mustn't be a term always associated with skyscrapers and sorts.

We can talk about providing business parks for many SE cities to enable business lettable office spaces within the city to set up easily, but aiming to build empty skyscrapers just to compete with elsewhere betrays one's vain mindset.
