sometimes i wonder if these them judges have sense or atleast conscience!!! how can you sentence someone who carry drugs to these kind of punishment especially these youth with destiny and dreams?
what happens tthen to murderers and corrupt officers who not only do drug, they embezzle the countrys money and subject the poor youth to abject poverty? All these polithiefians are still very much around and are giving fine of less than a million for stealing billions... mtcheeew! We seriously need an over haul of our judiciary system. All these corupt jugdes should be flushed out... period!!!!

In this case....the evidence, witnesses, etc...all were available freely...and thus a successful prosecution.

As for big man stealing....when the big man has the money to buy lawyers, and to dispose of evidence, and to bribe witnesses, plus there are a large mass of people who are ready to create violence...including up to the level of threatening national security....should their man be convicted....i can understand why the govt decides that pardon is the least horrible alternative.

We will never fight corruption in Nigeria until people realize that when your family member or tribal champion steals...it does not just affect the other guy. It affects you too....even if you are benefiting from the stolen money. But sadly, Nigerians, because of poverty ....cannot see beyond their daily bread....even to the means of permanently securing their daily bread via zero corruption.

To the emboldened, I think otherwise.
Why
Majority of the people benefitting from these "big men" are not poor; they are fellow big men.

In essence, the problem is not poverty; it is, GREED!!!!

While their crime deserves some punishment, 55 years for smuggling small quantities of drug is excessive. How many years would a murderer get? Three to five years would have been sufficient punishment to make them have a rethink. And if they continue, then the courts can scale up the punishment to 10 - 15 years.

Why waste a young person's life for smuggling a few kilos of hard drugs? They need to be rehabilitated, not put away for life. Our laws are so out of date. The judges metting out this punishments lack basic common sense. Where are they going to house these people? Is it in that colonial era Enugu prison that is a death trap? What about our politicians that steal billions everyday? Has any of them gone to jail?

the truth is that the black man is never serious......why do we create prisons? For rehabilitation and to deter......that's why in america u have correctional facilities.....there is no difference between an arab and a black......55 years for that? Some times what we do defies logic......am sure we are still using clifford's constitution
