ayabdul:
can a graduate of physics do masters in public health
Etinosajay:

As a graduate of physics, you will have to first undertake pre-masters programme which will satisfy the entry requirement for a full blown masters degree programme in Public Health.

@Etinosajay, I'm not sure your response was correct. My first degree was sociology and anthropology and i didn't have to go for any pre-masters. I went for my MPH the same year i finished NYSC.

Careers in Public Health is really marketable in the developing countries. I read somewhere on this thread that MPH is for medical doctors while MSc in public health is for non-holder of MBBS. I'm happy to let you know that this information is not totally correct. I'm not a medical doctor and i did my MPH successfully.

Thanks @ ayowumie

We appreciate your contributions here. We hope you continue sharing what you know with us.

However, my response to ayabdul is correct, judging from entry requirements to most MPH degrees which requires at least a 2:1 from biomedical or life sciences. Therefore he may need to take remedial programs in public health or show some work experiences affiliated to public health. Nevertheless he may wish to consult an updated admission guide for the past yr. I have added a link to U of Ibadan 2014/2015 admission guide in my previous post.

With respect to yours, could you tell us what MPH stream you were admitted into? And wat school it was.

@Etinosajay.. You are actually correct to some extent so is @ayowunmie but I for example took unilag and Abu Zaria into cognizance to arrive at my response. N u r using UI for urs. So its safe to say the requirement for public health differ in d various institutions that offer it. Now, if you also go through Unilag Prospectus. U ll see Dat Mph is strictly for MBBS/BDS holders with its own course content while there is MSc ph for others. Pls see links below: For MSc ph

I'm aware of Public Health in Unilag, Uniben, and other universities. These universities do not have a full grade public health faculty or school. The public health courses they offer only contains units or specializations designed for medical graduates. Furthermore, Uniben for example does not have a public health faculty. Their public health course is taken @ the college of medicine as an appendage of the medical course.

UI, on the contrary has a Faculty of Public health, and have diverse streams of study.

You can do more research on this, to get more information.

Re: Careers In Public Health by EbunLanre(f): 7:15pm On Apr 09, 2015
@etinosajay.. I don't think because these schools do not have a full grade faculty makes what they teach in them different. And some of these schools also have courses for non medical graduates. Their units might be limited but I do not think its inferior to what can be gotten in epidemiology of UI for example. We all cannot go to Ul. So i think applicants would want to know d schools that offer this course generally and their entry requirements. Using UI alone to give info is not good enough.

You're getting my point wrong. I didn't say one was different and or inferior to the other.

Here is what I said. Unilag has an MPH with streams that is essentially for medical graduates (UI has this in their MPH too). So what they teach here isn't different or inferior to what they teach @ UI. But, Unilag doesn't have a full grown public health faculty that caters for other MPH streams like Global Health, Nutrition, Environmental Health, etcetera. That was to tell you that not only medical graduates can undertake MPH as you claimed before.

I use UI as a reference point because they have closest to what a faculty of public health should be.

Now I hope you understand this point.

An MPH in environmental health equips you to work everywhere actually. Public health as it is, is gaining consequent recognition in even Nigeria as of now.

Ministries and department of health in both FG, State and LG are places to start with. NGO's (very reputable ones both local and international). Specific names like Wateraid, UNFPA, MSF, etc.

If you decide to pursue the occupational part of environmental health, then you can work in every other private owned or government owned company as safety officer or manager in their safety unit/department.

These are a little tips. Your opportunities can only be limited by your abilities and vision.

Hardly had the world over come Ebola before Dengue came up and Measles re emergence in America infectious diseases are beating back antibiotics. I would think Msc medical microbiology involves a lot of lab work. Frankly, I'm not in a position to compare them.

You would already know what Public health entails by reading through our various opinions here.

Ask me to chose? I will chose MPH public Health.

Many schools have set their specific requirements for interested applicants. While there may be a general requirements, specific requirements may also exist. I suggest you get in touch with Unilag PG admission officer or consult the admission brochure to be sure.

As a graduate of Biochemistry, you should be eligible to apply for MPH, except you're applying to a particular stream which requires medical experience.

I asked at the dept n I was told its not compulsory. Although, since its a competitive course, I believe they may use it as a criteria to reduce number of intake if the number of students that passed the entrance exam is much. MSC. PH is open to everyone if you meet the criteria in their prospectus.

This thread is to bring ideas, information, advice, discussion, direction and achieving a common goal for prospective public health professionals.

Firstly, I'm starting out my career in public health. That's 110% decided. I have a bachelor's degree in the sciences and a relatively sound knowledge of research.

Public Health is an enormous discipline which is open to everyone irrespective of their originating academic background, towards achieving a safe and planned public health.

In Nigeria, public health is available only at a higher Cadre of learning, starting from the masters degree setup, so I have found out.

The university of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Lagos are example of schools with Public Health Department which award degrees in Public Health. Entry requirements vary between these schools, so be sure to check the admission requirements of these schools to guide you in your decision making

As I'm starting out my own career, I will not have all the knowledge to pass along, therefore I urge experienced public health professionals operating in Nigeria and elsewhere to post valuable contributions to aid prospective, entry level, mid-career and top-level public health professionals here
Good morning to you,pls I have some questions for you. 1.I am a graduate of industrial chemistry from a state university, can I be accepted for a MSC in public health or MPH in UI considering the fact that I only have a year experience in teaching? 2.If I can be accepted for the MPH,when I am through with it,can I lecture with it or is it only corporate organisation that I can work with? I am asking this questions because I want to obtain the present UI PG form but I am weighing my options among MSC In PH or MPH or going for msc in environment and pollution control. PLEASE NOTE:I have preference for working in a corporate organization or public org than in the academia but I don't wanna limit myself when I am through because of limited jobs.

I will answer emphatic yes to all of your questions.

You can be accepted to either an MPH or an MSc in Public Health. The question will be what stream are you interested in. Some streams in Public Health although require strictly a medical degree, but I can tell that environmental whatever is your thing.

There is an MPH stream called environmental Health, you can well be accepted, if you meet the requirement. Study the available prospectus which you will find on the pgschool website.

As for employability after graduation, I personally believe that has everything to do with how you position yourself or what opportunities you embrace or avail yourself of.

With an MPH, in say environmental health, you can work in a government health department or private NGO or any arm of the WHO or MSF, wateraid, UNAID, USAID, UKDFID, etc. additionally you can take up a position in lecturing, along the line of public health or as a consultant. These are all feasible and possible according to what opportunities you avail yourself of.

These are my little debatable points. Enjoy and be of good health.

You can, but it would be better if you're a few months away from completing your NYSC. Say 3 months away.

I wouldn't embrace the angel tag you're wearing me but I understand what you mean.

I think you can cope, if you're up for it and if you set your mind to achieve that. As much as you know which of both takes top priority amongst your to do list.

I have seen people work and school, even those who don't reside in Ibadan. So, go get the forms and fulfil your destiny, my friend.

Occupational health and environmental health are fantastic areas to study. People who know, will tell you more.
