My opinion is that textile businesses would have evolved without the ban in the first place. Textile importers are best positioned to set up cottage textile industries. This is what happened with motor cycles and other vehicles. There won't be Innosson today if there was a ban on motor cycle importation.

EVERY country bans or at least has high tariffs to discourage imports and encourage local growth.

That includes USA, European countries, China, South Korea etc. and they are usually having trade WARS against each other on these matter of PROTECTIVE measures!

Please get your facts right before MISLEADING others.
Thanks.

You guys keep trying to justify every idiotic move by the daullardiho... Who told you that the ban was never enforced and had no impact? Even if a banned product is smuggled inside a country, the price will always be higher than the local made ones, therefore the competition effect won't be much BUT now foreign and local products will be selling at the same price... Now tell me who is going to buy the locally produced ones?

Fool, shut ur trap. Instead of allowing massive smuggling because of the old policy which we give the govt zero income the importers can now come forward cleanly and these goods can be heavily taxed by the govt. These goods invariably will become much more expensive at the local market when compared to the locally manufacturers ones as a result of these tax. Many Nigerias won't be able to afford it which will lead to local options. Local producers will also continue to improve their capabilities to meet up with the imported ones. It's a win win for all.

Buhari is no doubt Block headed and the dullest since independence. Shagari was the only Nigerian president who was a secondary school teacher with standard six, an equivalent of the today OND. Buhari having gone through all the military trainings both overseas and locally is still clearly the dumbest. Can this administration tell us why the ban is lifted other than to say they are dutiable. If you compare the duties and the benefits that will derived form the locally made ones, which is be better?

Well, quote did have a valid point ....don't you think the government should have focused on tackling that sort of corruption instead of sending us more steps backward than forward?

The truth is that the ban was never enforced. The ban did not stop or even reduce the importation of textiles all. It was just an avenue for the ever corrupt customs officials to make so much money in the form of bribes; moneys which should have accrued to the government as duties. With the lifting of the ban, at least a chunk of those moneys received by the customs guys would get to the government.... and this govt is in desperate need of revenue.

What proof do you have that it was never enforced?
Are we now going to play oblivious to the fact that this could impede and discourage local manufacturers?

If the picture you paint is truly so, don't you think local textile manufacturers would have cried out?
The ban discouraged importation to a large extent as evidenced by the boom we now see in that industry.

Ask Oshodi Textile Dealers.

Gbemudu said these items were banned because the government wanted to protect the local industries involved in the manufacturing of these goods.

So, this government sees no need to protect the local industries, because they want to create revenue?
My question goes thus..."at what cost?"

Finally, a government that decides before it thinks has arrived.

We are in for some terrible times ahead, it is clear Buhari has no idea how to run an economy. He is sabotaging our local industries with this move, it is idiotic.

Companies like bedmate, lifemate where thriving on imported furnitures, which they sell freely, there is a street in DLine port harcourt where tgey sell both home n office furnitures, all imported mostly from china. So bro there was no enforcing of that policy.

I was even about coming to that. These chaps continue to open showrooms upon showrooms.

The colored is what we should be focused on. How high are these tariffs? It should be so high that by the time it enters the Nigerian market, it will be be excessively expensive. If u can't afford it, go for local alternatives.

There is no misleading others here as you surmised. That move by Buhari is a smart one because government will earn some revenue from it. In the long run the importers will earn enough capital to invest in either textile or other cottage industries. Aba was booming at a time based on private enterprise. Looks like some government policies are having a knock on effect hence the desperate need to revert.

Trash it's clearly shows that u lack common basis economic analysis. If your government is desperately in need of revenue, lifting ban on importation is it the best solution to income generator ? If importation is higher than exportation what do u think it will result to ? Don't you think it's will definitely befall government revenue or income generation. We are talking of how government will boost our economy through diversification . If government encourage small scale industry and we start exporting to other country who will benefit most? Is'nt not Nigeria government....... Must we rely on importation ? Another setback forward change indeed Nigeria has enter one chance

The dude was right.

This is indeed a sad day for us in this country. It should indeed be declared a day of mourning. How can a government who claim to be responsible be toying with the future of her citizens. It appears that we have finally entered one chance bus. Nigeria from this has become a dumping ground.
JEJ rejected this when he was asked to embrace it. Now the change agents whom themselves are not changed brought it back.
May God save us from this confused changers.

My dear, it has started. I said it. Instead of fulfilling the promises he made to Nigerians he has started fulfilling the promises he made to the G7 and other western countries. May God indeed save us.

The United States has one of the best securities and border patrols in the world, yet contrabands like hard drugs still find their way into the country.
Indonesia and Malasia have the strictest form of purnishment for hard drugs peddlers. But as we speak, drug peddlers are swinddling large kilos of cocain into these countries despite the hash laws.
Truth is, no system is perfect. People will still find ways to smuggle contrabands into a country. This is the evil part of human nature mankind have to deal with.

UK at one point placed restriction on what could and could not be imported from china in terms of textiles when they noticed that the country was swamped with Chinese made wears at the chagrin of the local industry...

Now i am afraid for this country. instead of assisting the local industry to become world standard, the new government is lifting ban on furniture and textile, the plan to send the ones trying to find their feet back to the grave. who is advising PMB as he has no minister?
