Glad to see that the birds are doing just fine. you need to apply caution increasing the egg size. However. you may consider photo stimulating them for the egg no increase.whatever vitamins u are using for now.don't use more than 80% of the recommended dosages to avoid prolapse.
hi. Please what is photo stimulation? I got some 'foreign' results on Google but would like to know better from a Nigerian. Lol.

omotititi. Have you ever gotten brown DOC pullets from Zartech Benin? If yes, what has been the experience in terms of liveability & production? I called Zartech Ibadan which is my usual source, but they seem fully booked for the next several weeks so I'm thinking of doing biz with Benin. Thanks. jamp. How far with the birds you were planning to buy? I believe they should be with you by now.

At a particular age. pullets react positively to increase in day lenght or Extra artificial Light. for example the average daylight in Nigeria for greater part of the year starts from 6am to 7pm(13hrs) Pullets coming to lay needs extra hrs of additional light to eat more food for consistent laying.
Hence the need to give extra light in the morning or at night.
literature has it that 16-17hrs of light most be achieved by 50% production.
However. so many farms achieved good production % without additional light or photostimulation.
The choice is yours.

@Eggcelent.....I have never used Zartech's birds. I stock only CHI. However, i hv a friend who has been using their products and she said they are top performers and that the only issue with them is CRD and that if one is able to check it early enough in their brooding stage, it will not pose any challenge in their productive stage. I suggest you buy from them since you currently buy from their sister outlet in Ibadan.

Started experiencing daily mortality with our laying birds since last week, lost about 52birds. Carried out lab test including sensitivity analyis. These test showed that all is well.
Our consultant & mentor said its normal to experience some mortlities as the flock come into lay.
Some farmers around suggests its due to excess fat (trying to get a scale to verify that). This batch was bought @ POL and now @ 27wks. Production was slow but recently being improving and now @ 55%.
I'm getting worried and needs to seek urgent help!
It's our first time and we are absentee farmer o!

@Segun1976,
have you started giving them Laxota. You also need to give routine antibiotics at this stage like Nemovit or Neoceryl plus.

@davidzfarm18, thanks for the advice.
We gave lasota @16wks and next dose is due next week. The sensitivity analysis showed lasota immunity still ok. We have also given antibiotics and vitamins. Also treated lice and flused our water system.

omotititi. Thanks. Much appreciated. segun1976. What time of the day do you record the mortality?Have the birds been debeaked? What has been happening to the dead birds? (Is it not possible that your staff intentionally kill them to fill their pots?). Sorry about your loss. Meanwhile, I don't agree that you must lose some birds when they are just coming into lay.

The timing is usually overnite.
We hve a policy of not giving ded birds to Staff, so that should not be. Motivation. We keep praying!

my first batch will be 2yrs by August and they are doing 60%(to God be the glory). they dropped from 70-60 after we changed to animal care. they are the ones feeding our 2nd & 3rd batches. we planned to push them to December before selling them.

sorry for the loss. If the lab result did not reveal anything then I suggest you check the ni.pples. sometimes birds die due to lack of water caused by faulty ni.pples. tell your staff to check the ni.pples at least once in 2days. I once had such issues so I told my staff to always note the cages so I investigate the cause of death.

you can also check for bulling as most birds do not allow some birds to eat in the cages.

check also the beak as suggested by eggcelent.

how do you weigh your birds? individually or in batches? and like how many birds do you have to weigh to give u the average weight for the entire set of birds?
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 7:21am On Jul 07, 2015
segun1976. I just noticed something. You said the last Lasota was given to them at 16 weeks & they are now 27 weeks. That's 11 weeks back. Besides, you weren't the one who administered the vaccine, so you can't vouch for what was done. Leaving the Sensitivity/serological test aside, common sense/experience dictates that your birds are due for another round of Lasota. Please, do the needful.

Good day house members. I will like you to enlighten me on the type of feeds to give day old broilers to get an average of 2kg weight in 6weeks. I mean finished or compounded feeds. If finished what brand. Thanks.

Sir, are you saying the birds are dying because they have not been given Lasota?

IMO, @segun1976, can you take ur time to spend few extra hours on the farm esp the pen house.

Also, can you upload a pic of the mortalities seen?

Check the nipples and ensure water goes round. Are your birds on lighting program?

Thanks!

I want to start my own poultry farm, but before starting I will like to go for training for the course.
Please have anyone on this forum attended the International course on Poultry production and Feed Manufacturing at North Carolina University. This course is for one week.
If yes what is your experience and is it a good course to attend.

We weigh them individually, and we weigh a whole bunch, and you can see from the ones you weighed that most of the other birds looks like the same size.
of course, some are about 900g some 800g and some 1.1kg etc.

In the past, at 4 weeks, most of them weighs 700g, some 600g

my broda na God ooo. i don't know how we did it. we try to do our best in terms of maintaining good hygiene. we also minimize the use of antibiotics, in fact we hardly use it. we use good feed in raising them(top feed). I think putting them in cage helped us also. above all prayers worked too cos we pray for the birds and our customers.

Just planning:
1) Move back to villa from Abuja, that is the best option I have now.
2) Raise some loan (money matters!!!)
3) Start small

Have always thought of starting big and it has remained a dream but with what I have read here, am gonna start from my uncle's uncompleted building. I will be back to villa by end of this week.

Of course I will major in broilers because I know that it is the money spinner or doubler if you like. I have these concepts I call INTEGRATED FARMING AND MARKETING or INTEGRATED FM. I will be discussing them on this thread and see reactions to help me or anyone who buys into it to fine tune the ideas.

Hello guys, my INTEGRATED FM are not written down anywhere but they are ideas I have thought through and developed with my naija local intelligence since the first time I developed interest in poultry farming(broiler) and as well observed others who have ventured into it.

Having experienced failure twice in other areas of life and being penniless at this stage in life, I shall rise from the dust and journey along this line to stability and prosperity. Goodnight guys.

Thanks to all who hv kept this thread alive, it has been two yrs since I posted this but am still in prep stage. That is vicissitudes of life for me. For my brothers in the east, always cross check and investigate properly before paying for land. Below is my would be poultry farm experience at Mgbakwu near Awka, last year.

True talk ooo, I think digital would be better but na the analog one we de use ooo, I made a mistake I bought a scale from the U.S without paying attention to the lbs thing, I don carry am reach Nigeria before I realize that it would be better to get something that reads in Kg. And the machine no cheap. So, na analog we de use for now. Yes, random weighing and just by sight you can pretty much guess that based on the ones that you have weighed what the majority of the rest will weigh.

Hope all is well with you guys.

My two cents, don't wait until it is all well to get started, because it is never all well. Start little, show yourself that it can be done. I ran what I called a research with 25 broilers and 10 layers at the back of my house, running this project recording everyday what I did, changing the water, replenishing the feed, changing the litter, and my kids naming some of the birds and watching the birds grow from 150g to eventually 3.5kg and more gave me the motivation. Of course I didn't have the money to go full scale them, I wrote business plan and went to some financing houses, they asked me where my farm was, and when I told them what I have done and that I just want to now get started, they told me to go get started and that if I then need money for expansion, then they can help. That was in 2011, I didn't let that stop me, I knew the potential of the industry and wanted to get in and be part of it.
So, don't procrastinate, start small and build from them. And when you start, know this that it is not going to be easy, and no matter what you have learned here, you will still have your owning learning by experience to do. Some things you have read here, it has been explained by someone here, and you will still do it wrong and your birds will die like fly. But don't worry, it means that you are becoming a farmer. I am speaking from experience, about 2 to 3 months ago, I lost about 6000 birds from my farm, and later I found out what I did wrong, and it is something that I have read here, something you shouldn't do.

So, don't wait, start now, and keep moving forward, there is so much room in this industry for everyone.
