darocha1:Thank you. moreover, that place does not look like a bulk room to me, it looks like an office of one of the nbank officials. They mostly do that for security measures so as to prevent people from tagging the owner of the money. If you know what I mean. |

This is one of the cogent reasons why some people were against the FOI bill. Nigerians would use it to ridiculous levels for lack of maturity. Some threads on this forum also fall into this category. But then it should send unscrupulous media/individuals out of circulation/to jail if those libelled take appropriate action. cc: Seun lalasticlala, etc Please be more circumspect in vetting threads on this forum. Some threads have no business appearing at all. Mischievious people and biggots may deliberately use such threads to run this forum down inspite of disclaimers. Some of us have become addictive to Nairaland and can't afford to lose it. Stricter damage control should be evolved. |

In addition to what musiwax pointed out earlier, the analysis by Decryptor is mis-truth, don't want to say false. First of, the news was all over the net on Wednesday check http://dailytrust.com.ng/daily/index.php/news-menu/news/59390-ndlea-intercepts-2-2m-cash-from-passenger-at-lagos-airport and http://thenationonlineng.net/new/ndlea-intercepts-2-1m-at-lagos-airport/. Having pointed that out, NDLEA is allowed to intercept huge sums of cash of this nature as it could be proceeds from illicit drug trade. This much was confirmed by the NDLEA spokesperson, Mitchel Ofoyeju, who said "Investigation conducted by the Agency did not link the money to proceeds of narcotics. However, a country having insurgency challenge cannot afford to ignore suspicious movement of such large amount of money". As per the counting machine, if they counted the sum manually, we would still accuse them of being 'backward' & not 'sophisticated'; they used a machine to save time & it's a problem because an anti-narcotics agency has nothing doing with counting machine? FYI, the machine could've been borrowed from any of the airlines or business offices that operate within the airport. As per the 'NK' in the background, why're you so sure its full meaning is 'BANK'? It could be 'INTERBANK', 'PRANK', 'RANK' or any other word/phrase. As per the man's demeanour, whose name is John Bamidele Ibiteye by the way, if you've nothing to fear & not guilty of what you're being accused, why should you be ruffled? Or perhaps even, he is a 'hardened' criminal, wouldn't that explain his calm expression? There're a million & one reasons why the man could've been calm, don't narrow it down to one. Finally, what gives you the confidence to conclude that "The story is absolutely false and should be disregarded!" SR could spew thrash at times & that's not subject to debate but to rush them to the gallows on this one, you, sir, are the one who's "false" and should be totally "disregarded". |

@ decrypor, read dis. A 32-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Obiefuna Ndulue, has died after some capsules used to pack substance that tested positive for cocaine burst in his stomach. The deceased was said to have slumped at the departure hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and was rushed to a hospital within the facility. It was learnt that Ndulue, who hailed from Anambra State, had wanted to travel via the Ethiopian airline to China. PUNCH Metrogathered that 55 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.2 kilogrammes were evacuated from the suspect’s stomach after he was stabilised at the hospital. The Lagos-based trader was said to have confessed to an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency that he had wanted to smuggle the drug. He reportedly died while receiving treatment. Our correspondent learnt that the agency also arrested a 46-year-old businessman, Bamidele Ibiteye, for allegedly laundering $2,198,900 (about N440m). It was learnt that the money was impounded from Ibiteye at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, as he wanted to board a flight en route to Abuja. Ibiteye, who runs a company, ND&C Global Investment Limited, told investigators that the money belonged to a medical practitioner in the state, identified as Thomas Martins. The suspect, however, declined to reveal the identity of the person who was to receive the money. The NDLEA Commander at the NAIA, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, confirmed Ndulue’s death. He said, “The deceased collapsed at the departure hall. He collapsed after he notified the airline officials of his intention to cancel his trip. About 55 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine with a total weight of 1.20kg was evacuated from his stomach. “The suspect confessed to cocaine ingestion. He later died while receiving treatment.” The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed Ibiteye’s arrest, adding that the money had been recovered. He said, “The $2,198,900 was seized from Ibiteye by anti-narcotic officials on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the MMA2, Lagos. The suspect was apprehended on his way to Abuja and he is being investigated in connection with the case.” It was gathered that the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, had directed that the suspect and the exhibit be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation. |

Decryptor: the story is false and should be disregarded simply because the accompanying pic was likely taken in a bank, or that the suspect was smiling? balderdash. shall we begin? 1. the initial report said he was caught ferrying the cash to abuja. it was never said where or when he was caught. most likely he was caught taking the cash FROM the bank TO abuja. or maybe the NDLEA officials took him to the bank after apprehension to confirm authenticity of the cash. wherever the picture was taken does not invalidate the story. 2. NDLEA CAN apprehend a criminal, being a policing agency. anyone can make arrests, ever heard of Citizen's Arrest? so if NDLEA catches a criminal, they should let him go simply because they've no jurisdiction in money laundering? everyone is obligated to stop crime. 3. the man's composure means nothing, especially if he's certain the actual owner of the hoard (most likely a rich and powerful govt official) will pull strings to get him off the hook. your alternative theory is the one making the least sense: a random guy would just smile for the camera so the NDLEA would implicate him in a staged crime. |

This news was featured in the Nation newspaper yesterday with the details. NDLEA intercepts $2.1m at Lagos airport The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted the sum of $2,198,900 from a man in Lagos. The money was seized by anti-narcotic officials on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos. One 46-year-old Ibiteye John Bamidele is being investigated in connection with the case. The suspect was apprehended on his way to Abuja. Preliminary investigation conducted by the Assets and Financial Investigation Directorate of the NDLEA revealed that Bamidele’s action contravenes the money laundering prohibition act 2011 as amended. He told the NDLEA officials that the money belongs to one Martins Olufemi Thomas, a medical practitioner in Lagos. Investigation conducted by the agency did not link the money to proceeds of narcotics. However, a country having a challenge of insurgency cannot afford to ignore suspicious movement of large amount of money. Consequently, the Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, has directed that the suspect and the exhibit be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further action. Giade said, “The outcome of preliminary investigation did not link the money to proceeds of narcotics. I have therefore directed that the suspect be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/ndlea-intercepts-2-1m-at-lagos-airport/ |
