China Firm Offers $12bn Financing for Key Power Projects

N’Delta Power Company to transfer $2bn gas, distribution assets to NGC, Discos
By Chineme Okafor in Abuja

State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the largest state-owned electricity utilities company in the world, which transmits and distributes power in China, has offered to fund up to $12 billion, key electricity transmission projects in the second phase of the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP).

SGCC, THISDAY learnt, had offered to invest first $8 billion and then $4 billion later as equity and loan participation in electricity transmission projects that will be built for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) through the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Limited in the phase two of the NIPP.

THISDAY at the weekend in Abuja gleaned from a status report on Nigeria’s power sector, which was presented by the NDPHC to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari that SGCC had made the offer in consortium with its other partners, CET Power and Westron.

The offer, THISDAY also learnt, would see the NDPHC committing about $600 million to the transmission project.
These projects may include Lot 5A Ikot Abasi 330kV transmission substation, Lot 6F, G and H Owerri-Nnewi-Onitsha 330kV line, Lot 7A and B evacuation from Oke Aro, and Lot 18A and B Ikot Abasi-Ikot Ekpene 330kV line.

Others include Lot 19-3C-Turn-in of Benin-Onitsha 330kV line in Ihovbor, Lot 20-1A Ikom 132/33kV substation, Lot 20-2 Obudu 132/33kV substation, Lot 20-3A and B Abakaliki-Ikom-Obudu 132kV line, Lot 25-3C Calabar EPZ 132/33kV substation as well as Lot 25-4C Adiabo-Calabar EPZ 132kV line.
According to the status report, which was reportedly presented to the government by the Managing Director of NDPHC, Mr. James Olotu, and obtained by THISDAY from the Presidency, these transmission projects are 15 of the 114 transmission projects that would not be completed in the first phase of the NIPP due to intractable wayleave issues and high cost escalations.
They have however been transferred to the phase two of the NIPP for consideration and approval by the board. It is these projects and a couple of others that SGCC and its other partners have indicated interest to fund.
The status report equally disclosed that within the prevailing transmission challenges of the power sector, SGCC’s funding portfolio in the sector could rise to $18 billion if the government would smartly resolve inherent challenges in projects’ financing in the transmission network, vis-à-vis the country’s power sector.

As part of the policy thrust of the NIPP phase two, NDPHC is expected to deploy parts of the funds earned from the sale of its 10 thermal power plants in an ongoing shares divestment programme, to help improve the capacity and reliability of the national grid to meet up with expected increase in the sector’s generation capacity.
SGCC reportedly manages electricity transmission and distribution from subsidiaries in Northern China, North-eastern China, Eastern China, Middle China and North-western China.

Also, a number of gas supplies and electricity distribution assets worth about $2 billion will likely be transferred to the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) and electricity distribution companies (Discos) in the country by the NDPHC.
The assets according to the status report, are slated to be disposed to the NGC and the 11 Discos in the country for use to improve on their operations in the power sector. Their value, the report added will be recovered within a 10-year period from the time the transfer is consummated.

There are about 296 distribution network assets as well as gas pipelines and metering stations in four lots that cover gas supplies to NIPP plants at Ihovbor, Egbema, Gbarain and Calabar. A new metering station in Sapele is equally part of the gas supplies and electricity distribution assets that will be transferred by NDPHC.

Fixing the society through my films is my major priority -Ifemechukwu

He joined the Nollywood industry as a location driver, but now, he drives the industry as one of the leading producers of blockbuster movies. Ifemechukwu Ibeh is a resolute person when it comes to quality delivery of home videos. As the Chief Executive Officer of Ifeme Divine Production Limited, he hails from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra state. As a business minded person he is, he tells his industry experiences in this interview with Media Personality, Ugochukwu Favour-Mayor.

Excerpts:
Can you briefly tell us how it all started for you in the Nollywood industry?

It all started in 1996, when I joined the Nollywood industry as a location driver. Though then, I had an opportunity of appearing in my first movie, which was Silent Night, a film produced and directed by Chico Ejiro. That was far back, when the industry was operating with VHS, you can imagine when they hustle all started for me. In that very movie, it was more like an opportunity, because it wasn’t so serious, even as I played the role of an extra alongside other major casts of the movie.

Since my appearance in that very movie, I furthered the journey while working with the then big names like O.J Movies, Infinity Productions, Emmalex, Alex Merchandise, Amaco Investment and many others. These were people who held the industry strong in terms of constant production of films. And it was cool working with them then; and the experience of working with them even helped in shaping my present position as a producer.

Did you later think of furthering your career in acting?

Yes, I did! I really thought of acting further, but then it was so tough that I had to pull out even as a location driver. But later on, I returned. When I returned, I started as an associate producer under Divine Touch Productions Limited. And the film I started with as an associate producer was Men In Love. As time kept rolling, we worked as a team in producing Ada-Mbano, which you know was a blockbuster movie. Today, we have some other well sold movies like, Ofe Owerre, Madam Success, Strippers, Sex Slave, Dirty Secret and many others.

How about your most recent movie, Mother’s Club?

It’s actually a good movie, though we had financial problems, but we were able to overcome it. As you know, it ended successfully, and it will soon be in the market.

What inspired you to go for such movie?
The need to fix a society with the right attitude and mindset to living; it was what inspired me. The movie, Mother’s Club is about two belligerent women who went for another marriage while keeping an existing one. And the question was what could make them go into another marriage? Could it be self-enrichment or what? It’s a suspense-filled one, I must say. It got directed by Reginald Ebere, while starring Mike Ezuruonye, Uche Ogbodo, Clarion Chukwurah and few others.

What is your area of concentration when it comes to story to produce?

I do glamour movies, but I concentrate a lot on family related issues. There are things going wrong in homes, and they need urgent attention for proper correction. Through my films, I help to put those things right.

What is your love for the Nollywood industry all about?

Right from my childhood, I have always loved entertainment. And I believe, it was exactly what attracted me to the industry. And here in Nollywood, we have this accommodating industry. Everyone here is accepted, and you have the opportunity to showcase your talent without anyone being a hindrance to it. So, I will say that the love I have for this very industry is numerous.

Outside being in the entertainment industry, where else would you have seen yourself?

From where I come from, we are business minded people. I would have gone into the business of buying and selling, but it’s all good that the industry took over me first, and I couldn’t help it. Maybe in the nearest future, I will try my hands in other trades, even as I can’t put my eggs in one basket. But for now, film production is my area of concentration.

How challenging is the industry?
It gets tough day after day. Though it all falls on marketing, and which involves the piracy aspect. You will work so hard to get fund, you go to location to produce, and finally when the movie is out, you then see your films being added to a DVD compilation without due permission. It’s a problem for us who are independent producers. We are using our hard-earned money to produce, and we are not getting support from anybody.

Another issue bothering us is the one on power. Today, you can’t find light in homes for our movies to be watched. Not every house could afford the excesses of a generator set. And you know that people at homes are our film consumers. If they don’t enjoy good light, they can’t enjoy our films.

Outside all these challenges, what motivates you?

There is this popular say: A quitter doesn’t win, and winner doesn’t quit. It’s a popular say, and it keeps me going whenever I feel like quitting. A lot of people stopped on the way as a result of the challenges faced. But remembering that assertion, it encourages me to do more.

While working with Divine Touch Productions, what level of support did you receive?

I got a lot of support and experience. I will not be fair without appreciating this wonderful man in the person of Mr. Kingsley Okereke. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Divine Touch Productions Limited. He is one man who likes to encourage people in business. He is my friend, but then, I owe him a lot for his show of love and support. I also want to thank his amiable wife, Chisom Juliet Okereke who brings out her quality time in developing good stories for all my films. That we have good stories that are making our films to be blockbuster ones, it is all because of her support. She writes and screenplays for us. Also don’t forget that behind a successful man, there is a woman. I won’t forget to mention the name of my beautiful wife, Vivian Chinwe Ibeh. She is a very supportive wife.

With all the experiences you’ve gathered for yourself in this industry, what advice would you give to people aspiring to be here?

I would want to advise the younger people. Before investing into any business, try as much as possible to study it. Take a good survey of what you want to do. We have a lot of fake people in the industry, who are claiming to be what they are not. They are out there to reap people off their money. One has to be careful. Be mindful of those who call you into business for investment. Be careful with your kind of association, it’s very important. Then pray for the right people.

Ekwusigo Lga News=>>Why I run charity home – Catholic priest, Fr. Ananwa 0

It is not child’s play joining missionary work with taking care of the physically challenged and abandoned children. Indeed, it takes the grace of God to successfully combine the two areas of human life.

One of those who dedicated their lives to do such charitable work is Rev Fr Anthony Ananwa of the Nnewi Catholic Diocese.

As he came back from Australia some years back where he went for further studies, after his ordination, the priest decided to set up Jesus Abandoned Charity Organization where he is currently feeding and taking care of a good number of the physically challenged and those abandoned by their parents or relations.

At the home in Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ananwa disclosed that the little savings he made while studying in Australia had been sunk into the home for feeding and housing the inmates which were over 100 in number, as well as running a primary school.

He said despite that it gladdened his heart anytime he was in the midst of the inmates, just like it gladdens a father or mother staying in the midst of his or her own children, adding that with celibacy forbidding Catholic priests from marrying wives and bearing children, he now saw the home as having afforded him the opportunity to beget children.

He said he had been battling relentlessly to keep the home going, adding that urgent help was needed from groups and individuals to keep it running, “otherwise, the home stands the risk of being closed as the cost of maintenance keeps escalating.”

He, therefore, made a passionate appeal to good-spirited individuals and corporate bodies to respond to their needs.

Ananwa said he started some charity organizations as a Seminarian and after ordination, he went to Australia to further his education and while in Australia, he had the opportunity of starting the Jesus Abandoned Charity Home and to the glory of God, he raised a duplex, a bungalow, school and borehole and still struggling to survive.

The priest said the name Jesus Abandoned Home was derived from a home where all children abandoned by their parents and the physically challenged were assembled for rehabilitation and caring, adding that some people were being abandoned by their parents due to one problem or the other:

“Some parents do abandon their children due to one physical challenge or the other. Because they are abandoned, we need some people that can take care of them. And remember Jesus cried on the cross of Calvary; ‘My God, my God why has thou forsaken me.’ So, Jesus Christ was also abandoned on the cross.”

He said that when someone abandoned a child of God, he had abandoned Jesus. According to him, Jesus said: “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting my children?” Quoting Matthew 25:32 he said: “I was hungry you gave me food, I was thirsty, you gave me water,” so, when you feed these children you feed Jesus, when you abandon them, you abandon Jesus. That is why we say: Jesus Abandoned.

“It is to see how we can rectify the way physically challenged people are being treated in Nigeria, because people don’t regard them as human beings. People regard them as outcasts. But they are human beings like us. God after creation said everything He created was good. I believe they are human beings and we need people that can show them that God is love. We are trying to help with the little we have.”

On the major challenges confronting his home, he stated: “Just to mention but a few. We have sunk a borehole and erected structures. We feed these brothers and sisters of ours three times every day. Apart from the feeding, we have medical challenges. The other day, we went to Hon. Emeka Anohu, member representing this constituency in the state House of Assembly for medical treatment. Also, we are giving them free treatment through Cameroonian doctors.

“We equally give them education that is why it is a rehabilitation home. We also give them accommodation and all these take money. We give them a lot of things like: wheel chairs, walking frame, crutches, and clothings free. All the things in that container recently brought from Australia are distributed free of charge to them. The other day, I went to Abuja and distributed 20 wheel chairs. The other day, at Kings Palace Hotel, Nnewi, I distributed 30 wheel chairs together with Rotary Club of Nnewi.”

Ananwa identified their major needs as accommodation, saying that the compound currently housing the home was too small even as the numbers of people being taken care of was increasing.

“We have somebody like Kosara that is deaf and dumb and some others that are abandoned. We need more accommodation to accommodate more. We need to raise buildings and mobility like a bus. The other day I was taking them to Hon. Emeka Anohu for medical treatment and I was carrying them on the back of a pickup van under the sun and somebody was querying as he saw how the sun was beating them while so many people were going on Hummer bus and luxury cars.

“We are still expecting a bus from Anambra State government to assist in our transport needs. We are equally appealing to corporate bodies and individuals to help us financially, materially and otherwise, and God will surely bless all our donors because we pray for them on daily basis.”

He also identified poor power supply as one of their problems, adding that “the electricity we have here is very low. I use fuel and generator to pump water, because you can’t run this type of home without water. The electricity is poor and the fund is not there. To feed them on a daily basis is a problem, but God is actually assisting us. So, I appeal to all to support what we are doing.”

Dunukofia Lga News=>>>•In Anambra, philanthropist brings smiles to pupils’ faces, donates N1m worth of band instruments

Staff and pupils of Central School, Umunachi, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State are singing the praises of a philanthropist and lawyer, Hon. Pat. Anyadubalu. He won their hearts, by donating to them, a full set of band instruments, worth of a million naira, which according to him, was designed to assist and give the pupils sense of belonging and motivation.

Anyadubalu, who also runs a non-governmental organization, Back-To-School Foundation, explained the reasons behind the gesture. “This primary school is where I had my first formal education, which was in the year 1975-1981,” he said. “So, it is part of my philanthropic gesture to support our alma-mater. I find out regrettably that in most cases when we clamour that the alumni should support their alma-mater, the emphasis is usually on the universities or secondary schools, not the primary schools. But you find out that primary school should be given that basic support because that is the origin and the foundation of good education for a child.

“You know when a foundation of a house is faulty you can hardly rectify a faulty foundation, what you do is to pull down the entire building, but if the foundation is solid and there is an error subsequently you can always rectify that error. Therefore if the foundation was not properly laid, probably it would have been very difficult for that person to rise up to secondary school or university level, but where the foundation is properly laid you will appreciate that the sky would be the limit of that child. So that was why I say that, let me support my alma-mater starting from the primary school.”

According to Anyadubalu, the gesture was also to assist the pupils in their march-past, during and after our nation’s celebration of October 1, May Day. “I think that absence or lack of band will affect the march-past and some other functions. I think this will motivate and enable them (pupils) to practise and compete with other schools during our nation’s celebrations.”

At the event, Anyadubalu further unveiled an essay writing/quiz competition for the school, to be named Pat Anyadubalu Annual Essay Competition. He said the essence was to encourage the pupils to cultivate reading culture and to master English language. “If these children are very good in English language, the sky would be their limit. English language is the basic language which is used to teach, so if they are good in English language, they will be good in many other subjects because the ability to understand a subject is the primary point. If they cannot understand the language, it will be very difficult for them to understand the subject. So I want to promote English language, I want to see a situation where in the future, we have journalists, members of the media, good lawyers, saying I attended this school, and the foundation was laid here. So I want to promote English language through the essay/quiz competition”.

He advised the pupils to read hard and to build a better future for themselves. “We were here probably 40 years ago and look at me now, I can tell you that I remember vividly the activities we passed through here as kids. Let people not think that the future is very far. Forty years ago, now look at me here and I can still recall particular places I used to sit. So let people not think that the future is very far; but start now to prepare, study hard because to lay a very good foundation is hard. As pupils, you have to start now to prepare for it. If you don’t start now to prepare for it, you won’t be able to go far because by the time you fail to do well at the primary level, you will not be able to make way at the secondary level.”

In her vote of thanks, the Headmistress, Mrs. Evelyn Uwaezuoke expressed joy for the donation, describing it as ‘a dream come true’ She maintained that the band and essay/quiz competition will go a long way in lifting the school which, according to her, has over 500 pupils.

She assured friends and well-wishers of the school of the unrelenting drive of her administration to instill discipline and quality education in the students and thanked the Anambra State government for its support. She, however, decried the poor state of the school library and appealed to the governor to provide a befitting library.

The pupils who wore smiling faces, prayed for the benefactor and asked God to bless him in his endeavours, for deeming it fit to contribute to the progress of their education.

Ogbaru Lga News=>>>>Electricity workers threaten industrial action over detention of EEDC staff

The National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, South-East zone has threatened to direct workers of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, to embark on industrial action if the alleged “dehumanizing and slave treatment” being meted out to the workers by the management was not stopped forthwith.

The union said no fewer than 15 senior managers and storekeepers in Onitsha Business unit of the EEDC had been arrested and now cooling their heels at Onitsha Police Area Command over allegation of “sharp practices in electricity billing and metering in Anambra State.”

Senior Assistant General Secretary of the union, Comrade Cyprian Ndubuisi Akoh, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting convened in Enugu by NUEE leadership to review the problems confronting its members in the zone.

“We, therefore, call upon the relevant authorities including the EEDC Management to halt this management recklessness and effect the release of all those detained. Failure to do so, the union should not be blamed if our members withdraw their services,” Akoh said.

According to him, the arrests and long detention of the electricity workers was at the instance of the Chairman of the EEDC Board of Directors, Sir Emeka Offor “on the ground that he has been complaining of revenue droppings while he was pumping money into the electricity business.’

He said that the issue of Sir Emeka Offor’s claim of pumping money in the business should be left for Nigerian consumers in the East to assess and confirm “because we are yet to see the positive dividends of the sector privatization.”

Akoh said: “We are yet to see where new transformers are brought into the network, instead old transformers that go out of service or vandalized remain unattended to for months except the host communities task themselves or their wealthy sons come to their rescue.

“The above notwithstanding, this union will never support acts of wrongdoings or illegalities in the field. What we frown at is the unscrupulous nature of the arrest and detention for upwards of two weeks and neither family members nor co-staff allowed to see them and know the reason for the arrest and detention. This is inhuman and slavish. This act of victimization and intimidation should stop forthwith.”

The NUEE Senior Assistant General Secretary, however, advised the EEDC management to establish an internal administrative machinery to investigate and establish fact of any given allegation and take adequate disciplinary action where the staff involved was found guilty.

“A situation where staff is arrested, detained and treated like a common criminal or armed bandit is nothing but a display of wickedness, highhandedness, despotism, tyranny and dictatorsh8ip in a country we are now celebrating democracy.

“The Inspector General of Police has made it known to Nigerians that nobody should be detained beyond 48 hours except on cases of armed robbery or murder, yet these staff members arrested have been detained for upwards of two weeks. Perhaps the Police is waiting for the orders of Sir Emeka Offor to release them,” Akoh further lamented.

He pointed out that production would nosedive while initiative would be killed whenever staff of an organization was intimidated and cowed to work under fear of the unknown.

“EEDC is an organization which (allegedly) neglects labour union in the company, treat staff with reckless impunity and government that should serve as a regulator through the instrumentality of Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity turns a blind eye there is bound to be industrial disharmony”, the NUEE official said.

He further listed the scenarios of arrest and detention of the electricity workers in the zone to include, the detention and handcuffing for two weeks of a staff of Ogbaru Business unit, the two weeks detention of another staff for giving out PVC cable to a customer who paid his bills and requested for the PVC cable for him to be reconnected and the arrest of a staff at Oraifite for no offence of his “because an electrician was seen in his network on a weekend when he was away.

“A responsible company operatives with conditions of service which spell out administrative procedures in handling staff wrongdoings with appropriate sanctions, while proven cases of fraud or criminal tendencies are reported to the law enforcement agencies for prosecution. As a union, we call for civilized and institutionalized administrative method of handling wrongdoings in an organization. The law enforcement agencies should be the last resort”.

The union, however, warned that it would not continue to sit back and watch EEDC “treat our members like common criminals or slaves serving in a strange land.”

Onitsha City News==>>>Anambra revenue agents, tipper owners in free-for-all

No fewer than five persons were injured yesterday in Onitsha as revenue agents in Anambra State engaged tipper truck owners and their drivers in a brawl over increase in tolls and environmental remedial fees.
No fewer than 10 vehicles were damaged in the fracas that followed a protest by the tipper owners and drivers, who operate on the platform of Tipper Owners and Drivers Association of Anambra State, TODAS.
The association had withdrawn its services since Monday to express grievances of its members against the increase allegedly effected by the state government’s revenue consultant.
They took to the streets of Onitsha, following alleged attack of five of their members and destruction of over 10 vehicles by the agents of the consultant.
The withdrawal of their service and subsequent protest had grounded building and construction activities in the state and they threatened that the situation would not change until government and their agents reverted to the N200 per trip of sandstone and other minerals they evacuate, instead of N1,400 and N1,000, respectively, they were being forced to pay.

Demands
The protesters wielded placards with inscriptions such as “We say no to N600, N1000, and N1,400 per trip,” “We stand on N200 per trip,” “Governor Obiano save us from the hands of greedy consultants and agents,” “tipper drivers will not render service in Anambra until government reverts to N200 per trip,” among others.
Addressing newsmen at Ogbe Ijaw Sand Beach, near Ose Okwodu Market, Onitsha, spokesman of the protesting members, Mr. Hycenth Okafor, said they were paying N100 to the past government, but that after much pressure from the new government, they agreed on August 14, 2014, to pay N200 per trip.
He said: “We were surprised when they asked us through one Mr. Emeka Igwe, consultants to the government, to pay N600 per trip and we were still contemplating meeting with the government to agree on an amount lower than N600 when a letter from Anambra State Ministry of Science, Technology and Mineral Resources, Revenue Consultant/Monitoring Unit, stated that we will be paying N1,000 per trip for single-axel truck and N1,400 per trip for double-axel truck, for all types of sand, laterite and clay with effect from last Monday.
“We were not consulted before these increments were made. They did not consider what we make and the cost of filling the sand and stones into our vehicles. So we decided to withdraw our services.
“We reconvened at our sites to have a meeting and met people who claimed to be agents to the consultants with dangerous weapons like machetes, bottles, and shovels.
“They started attacking our members and even destroyed our vehicles without asking why we were meeting.”

I’m not aware of protest,
attack—COMMISSIONER
Contacted, Commissioner for Science, Technology and Mineral Resources Prince Chinedu Emeka, said he was not in Anambra State and did not know anything about the protest and attack.
However, Supervisory Head of Revenue Consultant/ Monitoring Unit of Ministry of Science, Technology and Mineral Resources, Mr. Emeka Igwe, who signed the letter for the new toll regime, refused to pick calls put through his phone and also failed to respond to text messages sent to the phone.
However, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Willie Obiano, Mr. James Eze, said people had always come up with all kinds of allegations when it concerned revenue collection.
He wondered why people could not accommodate increment in revenue that came to the state, more so when they were seeing the developments going on.

Dunukofia Lga News=>>>Arthur Eze: His Fortune, Fame and Freedom

His unending praise names refer to his unequalled generosity as a free giver, especially for developmental projects that dot every Igbo landscape and beyond. “Ozo Igbo Ndu” (saver of the Igbos), “Arthur One Thousand,” “Ala Nazu Nwa” (The breast that feeds babies), “Orimili Atata” (River that never dries), “okpatalu zua ora” (generous man that feeds the masses), “ogalanya bu oku ora” (the wealthy/rich man is a provider for all), among others, in addition to the family’s royal sobriquet of “Eze Na Ukpo” (The King of Ukpo) attest to his long practice of genuine charity. His empathic display of kindness and concern for fellow beings has become his pattern of life amongst particularly the Igbo-speaking clines in the Eastern flank of the River Niger and Nigerians as a whole irrespective of tribe, religion or class. His humanitarian largesse has brought positive impacts in most developed rural Igbo communities especially in Anambra state in terms of infrastructural advancements, job creation and youth’s empowerment. It is common place for enterprising communities to organise fund-raising activities to generate revenue for the execution of communal projects like civic centres, academic institutions, hospitals, churches, roads, water and rural electrification among others. But one outstanding philanthropist whose name is a recurring decimal point in most of such fund-raising ceremonies and kind dispositions is Engineer Prince Arthur Eze, the Chief Executive Officer of Triax Group of Companies. In this report, Kasie Abone writes that in the midst of Eze’s overflowing opulence and generosity, his simplicity, accessibility, and good nature know no bounds

Background
He was born over 60 years ago to the family of His Royal Highness, Michael Eze, Okofia I and Eze n’Ukpo, the traditional ruler of Ukpo Kingdom, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra. Two of his elder brothers, late Dr. Walter Eze, a medical doctor and proprietor of the renowned Toronto Hospital, Onitsha and Dr. Robert Eze, Okofia VI (the current traditional ruler of the town) reigned over the town after the death of his father. An engineer by training, Eze is married to a teacher and his marriage is blessed with five children: three sons and two daughters. Despite his immense means, his children were brought up in the strictest, disciplined tradition with strong aversion for vulgar display of wealth. In spite of running a closely knit family, his children were not known to have indulged in elaborate birthday parties. In addition to his siblings, Eze has many half-brothers and half-sisters with his father, as is customary in royal homes, married many wives, all of them bonded in love and oneness; thanks to Arthur’s generous disposition towards all.

Born to give
That he has an aversion to suffering is merely stating the obvious. His belief is that God cannot make everybody rich at the same time – that God blessed him with stupendous wealth to bless the less privileged irrespective of class, tribe or religion. As an untiring giver Eze has a single-minded commitment to eradicate poverty by empowering individuals to create wealth for a better society. The magnitude of his hospitality, overwhelming limitless easy access, freedom to interact, dine and wine with all people amidst banters set him apart from other men of means. The Obi of Abagana, Igwe Mbamalu Okeke, one of his closest associates, says of his generosity: “I doubt if there is any Nigerian who is as generous as Arthur in the number of houses he builds for the indigent, cars he gives out or churches and individuals or communities he supports. Arthur falls sick whenever he has no money to give out for good causes.”

His philosophy of philanthropy
Arthur Eze makes massive financial contributions to various communal and governmental projects not only in Anambra but across the country. The list of beneficiaries of his philantrophy is endless. Numerous towns, religious bodies and charitable organisations sing praises whenever Prince Eze stretches his hands of kindness to them. Some examples will suffice. As chief launcher at a fund raiser by Benue State government in 1992, during the administration of Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu (now deceased) Eze shocked the audience with a whopping cash donation of N20 million (equivalent of about N2 billion today) delivered on the spot which elicited deafening ovation, to the admiration of the then military President Ibrahim Babangida who was present the event.

In 2013, Prince Eze stunned his audience when he doled out a whopping $12 million (an equivalent of N1.8 billion) to St. Stephen’s Anglican Deaconry and Youth Development Centre in Otuoke, Bayelsa; ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s home church. His response to critics was simple: “God gave me the money to contribute to the church. We are thanking God for what he has done for Otuoke. It was abandoned for many years. They had no water, no electricity until when God brought Jonathan to change that place. Let the people have a place to worship God.”

An ageing Enugu-based journalist had a date with fortune some years ago when he was offered a parting gift of a brand new car by the Ukpo Prince when he joined other pressmen for an interactive session with the Triax boss in his sprawling residence at GRA, Enugu. Little did he expect such a surprise package when Prince Eze gave him a parting gift, again, to the admiration and loud applause of the journalists present, who individually received a dose of generosity of this multibillionaire. During the 2014 Christmas and 2015 New Year’s festive period, Eze attended a wedding silver jubilee thanksgiving church service of his friend at a neighbouring Abagana community. He stirred the congregation with a N20 million donation and a financial windfall for the choir, officiating priests and different adult and youth groups to the tune of several millions of Naira. Three days later, he donated N5 million to the same community through an emissary, on the occasion of the 2014 Abagana General Return and launch of appeal fund for an ultra-modern civic centre.

Prince Eze’s residences at GRA Enugu and Abuja are distinguished by the huge presence of less privileged people whose only hope of existence and survival hinge on the shoulders of the generous business mogul who personally attends to them. To them, the prince is the only messiah they know and the last bastion of hope to be alive. He is also known to have contributed $6.3 million to flood relief efforts in the country in 2012, as well as to ongoing educational causes which include donations to universities.

To expand and sustain empowerment and poverty reduction, Arthur Eze Foundation was established. Last year alone, at Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State capital, thousands of Anambrarians were empowered with sewing machines, dryers, generators among many others to set up their small-scale businesses. Eze has hugely intervened in the areas of providing medical care to the sick in different hospitals across Nigeria including sponsoring medical missions to overseas hospitals on serious cases that need expert attention that is not available in Nigeria.

Ukpo’s illustrious son
Prince Eze’s milk of kindness also offers succour to his kinsmen. In his Ukpo community, the natives are always counting their blessings whenever the oil magnate comes home. Apart from single-handedly attracting a medical research unit of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prince Eze’s goodwill and influence has attracted numerous other infrastructures and developmental projects to his town. The creation of Dunukofia LGA from the old Njikoka local government; modernisation of the local market near the Ukpo palace as well as the network of asphalted roads linking the Dunukofia clan with neighbouring towns, like Abba, Awkuzu, Ifite-Dunu and Abagana, are a few of his numerous projects he single-handedly attracted to his town. Though an Anglican, Arthur also independently built both the Catholic and Anglican churches in his home town while students and pupils are placed on scholarships from primary up to secondary school level with employments given to numerous graduates from the town. Numerous widows and poor people receive regular financial grants from him and houses were built for the less privileged by the outstanding philanthropist, who often urges his lucky beneficiaries to always pray to God to keep him alive to continue the charity works for the benefit of the needy and the society at large.

Ofala festival in Ukpo Kingdom has taken a different coloration. The annual festival which traditionally marks the end of a year and beginning of a new one now serves as the last hope of the poor, the weak, the old, orphans, the less-privileged, widows and widowers. Eze has successfully changed the day to a fun-filled occasion; he dines and wines with the downtrodden, distributes clothes, money, food items and also uses the event to pay school fees of children from indigent homes.

Eze’s business
Prince Arthur Eze is a major player in both local and international oil market. His company, Atlas Oranto Petroleum International Limited, a wholly Nigerian oil exploration and production company, operates oil blocks in Nigeria and West African sub-region. AOPL also maintains vast interests in upstream sector cutting across Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Togo, Chad, Ivory Coast and Liberia. Its technical partners include Roc Oil, Pioneer Natural Resources of the USA, Canoxy, Transworld of the USA, LukOil of Russia, Tetra, Noble, Kosmos Energy of the USA, Petronas of Malaysia, DNO of Norway, TransAtlantic Petroleum of the USA and Canada’s Nexen. His airline Triax Airline, which operated locally, went off airspace in 2000. He also has substantial investments in Premier Breweries which has been re-engineered to commence production in Onitsha. Orient Nigeria Limited, the Onitsha based first privately-owned refinery, belongs to him.

A power broker, an inclusive politician
Arthur’s style of inclusive politics has seen him supporting every party for the common good and sustainable development of Igbos in particular and Nigeria as a whole. “I belong to all political parties. APGA was formed in my house,” he was quoted as saying. Chief Victor Umeh, erstwhile APGA National Chairman, affirmed this claim when he told his audience at the last general elections campaign at Ukpo that the Prince funded APGA registration to give Igbos a voice in Nigerian politics. Over the past two decades Arthur has played very key behind-the-scene roles in shaping the political fortunes and future of his native Anambra and the entire South-East geo-political zone. Some of the candidates who have hugely benefitted from his benevolence include Mrs. Joy Emordi whom he nurtured from a neophyte to political prominence; former CBN governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Chief Chris Ubah; the self-confessed political godfather, Tony Nwoye; 2013 Anambra PDP governorship aspirant, Mr. Agagbo Cosmas; former Anambra PDP chairman among many others. Unconfirmed reports also say that he was instrumental to the emergence of Mr. Ugwuanyi as Enugu State governor. Besides supporting individual candidacy, Arthur also throws his weight behind state governors. The peace enjoyed in Anambra today could be traceable to his generous support of security fund in former Peter Obi and Chief Willie Obiano’s governments. As chief launcher at Obi’s Security Trust Fund (ASSTF) launch, Eze made a donation of N2 billion. He replicated such gesture with a donation of $1 million in support of Obiano’s security trust fund, the singular most generous donor which has seen a tremendous reduction in crime rate in the state.

At Obiano’s one year anniversary, Eze was the only opposition member that stood stoically behind him. A staunch supporter of PDP and former President Goodluck Jonathan’s government, Eze reportedly visited President Muhammadu Buhari and promised to support his government. His argument was that God gives power and authority and whoever God elects to lead should be given maximum support.

Eze and his orchestra
At a corner of Arthur Eze’s palatial living rooms at Ukpo, Enugu and Abuja, standby orchestras fill the courts with heavenly hymns in praise of God for his goodness and abundant blessings upon his life. The choir dishes out soulful, melodious Christian songs and hymns to the listening pleasure of his guests and they are handsomely rewarded for their efforts. This aligns with his belief that God created man with the ability to sing and to make music with musical instruments to complement the voice in praise of Him, and a constant reminder of man’s immortality and a higher purpose on earth. He also enjoys karaoke in choice hotels. Eze is also a great fan of the late highlife music maestro, Oliver De Coque and Emeka Morocco Maduka, the creator of Ekpili brand of music both of who waxed albums to eulogise his opulence and generosity.

Living life to the full
Eze does not just enable people to enjoy good life through his generosity, he enjoys good life himself. From the glittering Rolls Royce (Phantom) and he has about five of them, to other choice wonders on wheels that adorn his garage to his Bombardier private jet estimated to cost about $25 million, Eze lives life to the full. He made history when he became the first Nigerian to land a private jet at Enugu International Airport. His mantra was that man will not live forever but touching humanity positively was an enduring legacy worth leaving after his life’s earthly journey. Yet in all of it, he is a classic example of simplicity and humility. His traditional casual attires, track suits and T-shirts belie his boundless opulence. But for activities that herald his entrance, Arthur could be missed in a crowd.

Ultimate dream
Arthur Eze’s desire is to leave a Nigeria where there is less pain; where the gap between the poor and rich is closed; where the less privileged will have access to hospitals and decent accommodation. When this is done, Eze would be happy when his creator beckons, that he has fulfilled his mission on earth. Until then, Eze’s unquenchable desire to keep giving continues unabated.

Nnewi City News=>>>Anambra: Taking Democracy Dividends to the Grassroots

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on assumption of office on March 17 last year announced his priorities to include security, agriculture, commerce and industry, and crude oil exploration. But soon after, the governor’s wife, Ebelechukwu, added more impetus to the Obiano testament by springing down the realm of governance to the grassroots in identifying and working with the less-privileged. Emeka Osondu writes

For the Willie Obiano family, March 17 last year was a decision date. Indeed, they were faced with the choice of improving or degrading the lives of the over five million people living in Anambra State. On that day, Obiano was sworn in as next governor of the state. As expected, Obiano was accompanied to the crowded ceremony by his wife, Ebelechukwu, and their daughter and grandchild to the applause and administration of the people who actually voted at the preceding governorship election for the continuity of progress.

Much as it is often said that behind every successful man, there is a woman, not many had thought that Obiano’s wife was dreaming out a focus on the lives of the common man in the grassroots, especially the less-privileged. Today, one year after the event, that imagination and what she might have thought at the swearing-in ceremony have been made manifest for all to behold.

Pet Project
Many rewarding fruits have accrued to the state through Mrs. Obiano’s pet project, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), a non-governmental, non-partisan organisation with a vision to be the beacon of sustainable empowerment for women and the less-privileged in the society.

The organisation has a mandate to care for the less-privileged and reduce woman-child vulnerability, while maintaining the dignity of the physically challenged persons in the society. CAFÉ also galvanises resources for the uplifting of orphans, vulnerable children and the physically challenged. The organisation attends to both skilled and non-skilled persons among the indigent rural women at the 177 communities of Anambra State.

Available records show that barely eight months after CAFE came into being, Mrs. Obiano has traversed every nook and cranny of the state in keeping with her avowed promise to be beside her husband and provide succour for the downtrodden in the society.

Free Corrective Surgery
Instructively, Mrs. Obiano does not operate with the state government’s funds, as it were. Instead, she partners with donor agencies and well-meaning people of the state and beyond to actualise her goal.
For instance, in furtherance of the CAFE agenda, Mrs. Obiano, in collaboration with Smile Train Nigeria, sponsored free cleft lip surgeries on some children and adults born with the congenial abnormality of cleft palate and cleft lips. This disorder leaves a child deformed on the lips and mouth, resulting in a child not feeding well or not speaking properly.

The free surgeries were undertaken at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. When delegates from the Smile Train Nigeria, led by Miss Victoria Awazie, and accompanied by the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Professor Anthony Igwegbe, paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Awka, recently, Mrs. Obiano assured them of continued partnership on the project.

The governor’s wife expressed gratitude to the Teaching Hospital and Smile Train Nigeria for the venture. She said it was the partnership with CAFE that made possible the successful corrective surgeries performed on the patients, which according to her, has shown love and bought back smiles on their faces.
In her words, “We will work to ensure that more children take advantage of the corrective surgery. It is a fact children of the less-privileged parents are mostly affected by the problem and we have to do everything possible to provide assistance to them. I am very much touched by the work of your hand.”

Free Limb Fittings
Beyond the free surgery, the joy of the physically changed knew no bounds, when before the last Christmas Mrs. Obiano sponsored the presentation of prosthetic limbs to over 270 beneficiaries through CAFÉ.
The limb fittings gesture was another partnership with Talaram Foundation, a consumable goods distribution giant from India, and the Rotary Foundation of Victoria Garden City, Lagos.

The opening of the presentation was performed by Governor Obiano himself, who announced that the ceremony was part of the first phase of the 1,000 prosthetic limb fittings planned for the physically challenged persons in the society. The governor expressed delight with the tripartite partnership, which according to him, “was essentially made to reach out in special ways to our brothers and sisters who need to be empowered.”

Returning Hope to the Less Privileged
Obiano expressed gratitude to the donor agencies for their support to his wife’s pet project, CAFÉ, saying, “It has actually added value to the lives of special members of the human community.” He added that the CAFÉ initiative by the First Lady “underscores her passion, commitment and bold effort at giving meaning to the lives of the disposed and disadvantaged.” He described the artificial limbs presentation ceremony to the physically challenged and amputated in the state as part of the programmes carried out by CAFÉ “to give back self-esteem and hope of being a better and productive person within the realm.”

Obiano outlined the activities his wife had carried out within the short time CAFÉ was inaugurated to include the renovation of the Basden Memorial School, Isulo, targeted at giving the children quality education, and boosting the attendance to antenatal clinics through enlightenment programmes. He said that Mrs. Obiano had led advocacy visits to rural and hard-to-reach communities in the state in order to promote maternal and child health, thereby helping to reduce child and maternal mortality in those areas.

The governor, who was visibly elated by the First Lady’s level of performance and support to his government through the CAFÉ initiative, further stated that the programme had actually empowered indigent persons at the grassroots in the 21 council areas. The organisation, he said, had provided “seed money” as take-off grants for enhanced business activities as well as sustained agricultural empowerment initiatives through the provision of improved seedlings to rural farmers in partnership with women cooperative societies.

Orumba South Lga=>>>
Godwin Maduka: A quintessential philanthropist

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

The above dictum by the erstwhile African nationalist and President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, best describes the pristine virtue of human existence, which is founded on kindness, gregariousness, amiability, generosity and love.

For the people of Umuchukwu Community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Dr. Godwin Maduka is an embodiment of impactful living. Like a meteor, he was destined by providence to burn so that their world may be lighted. He was described in the programme of event for Umuchukwu Day of Thanksgiving to God in 2007 as “one whose magnanimity has touched every sphere of human endeavour within and outside his immediate environment” all in succinct recognition of his numerous strides in improving the lots of his people.

Born to the family of Maduka in the then Nkerehi (now Umuchukwu) community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the young Maduka had his early childhood education in the country before proceeding to the United States of America where he studied Chemistry, Pharmacy and Medicine excelling in all these academic disciplines in flying colours.

Dr. Godwin Maduka bagged a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Rut College Holy Spring Mississippi in 1984 and a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Mercer University of Pharmacy Atlanta Georgia in 1988. He equally completed his Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree before proceeding to the prestigious Harvard University School of Medicine where he completed his Graduate Medical Training, specializing in Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management in 1997. He is the founder of Las Vegas Pain Institute which focuses on the unique needs of each individual pain patient and development of new levels of relief for all types of pain. He is a recipient of the prestigious “Heart Beat of Africa Award”.

Particularly striking about the personality of this great Nigerian is the fact that unlike his compeers in diaspora, Dr. Maduka never allowed the allure of western life and the concomitant prevailing culture of individualism becloud his sense of communitarian living that is the hallmark of traditional African societies. Hence, he has consistently kept in touch with his local communities through his numerous laudable developmental projects, which span education, economy, transportation, religion, water resources, leisure and recreation, peace-building, hospitality, employment and human capital development, youth empowerment, charities, security, health and philanthropy to mention a few.

Prior to Dr. Maduka’s interventions, Umuchukwu Community which shares common boundary with Abia State virtually had no government presence. The community could only boast of a dilapidated Community Primary School with no secondary school nor hospital, police station and motorable road. He commenced and single-handedly completed the construction of St. Jude Catholic Pro-Cathedral Umuchukwu including a huge mansion for resident priests and in addition sponsored the church to become an independent parish. He also built Umuchukwu Civic Centre, Umuchukwu magistrate Court complex, Umuchukwu Nigeria Police Station made up of four one-storey buildings, and one five-storey and a two-storey block for Trinity Hospital and Maternity with fully equipped ambulance services. Others include the construction of the ultra-modern Immaculate Concept International College together with teachers’ quarters, a magnificent edifice for the traditional ruler of the community reminiscence of the kind of abode inhabited by traditional rulers in other parts of the country and donated exotic cars to ordained priests from the community as well as to other well-meaning indigenes of the community.

Dualization of Owerre-Ezukala-Umuchukwu as well as Umuchukwu-Ogbunka roads were all possible thanks to the kind generosity of Dr. Godwin Maduka who also has, at different occasions, defrayed the cost of accumulated electricity bills of his people amounting to millions of naira all in an effort to ensure that his people never stayed in darkness.

Other areas of interventions by this illustrious African include renovations of St. Paul’s Anglican Church Umuchukwu the residence of the Parish Priest of the said church as well as the comatose Community Primary School; provision of free medical services to indigent indigenes of the community, and award of scholarship to more than thirty persons studying in various institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Maduka has equally built houses for the less privileged both in Umuchukwu and Owerre-Ezukala, a neighbouring community. His youth empowerment programmes span also the provision of soft loans, cars motorbikes and buses to youths and youth groups in the community. He has, through his contacts, secured employment to many graduates even as he has provided succor to the aged, bereaved and infirm.

As a way of boosting the moral and spiritual rejuvenation of his people, Dr. Maduka spearheaded the siting of monastry at Umuchukwu and actually doled out millions of naira in materials and logistics to make that dream a reality. He embarked on gigantic rural water scheme and by so doing successfully delivered clean potable water to his people and the inhabitants of neighbouring communities. This singular initiative has enhanced the health conditions of his people as it has effectively curtailed outbreak of water borne diseases and other communicable diseases that hitherto ravaged the community. He also constructed two bridges linking Umuchukwu and Ogbunka and by so doing strengthened inter-communal relationship between the two communities.

Even in the face of needless provocations and bile by a few disgruntled individuals in the community who at a point elected to disparage, impugn this great icon of generosity for standing for the general good of his people, Dr. Maduka has remained undeterred, firm, unfazed and fearless according to his own conscience in the service of his people. Little wonder he has resolved to set up a state-of-the art pharmaceutical plant at Umunze. Work is also ongoing at the fourteen storey Community Building Complex which upon completion would serve many purposes including recreation, shopping malls, conference venues and so on for various government and non-governmental organizations.

We’ll welcome Obi back to APGA -Obiano

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State at the weekend said the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will welcome former Governor Peter Obi if he decides to come back to the party.

Obiano, who attributed his emergence as governor to the efforts of the former governor and immediate past National Chairman of the party, Sir Victor Umeh, said the party was reaching out to old friends in an effort to make it stronger.

The governor spoke at a thanksgiving service held to mark the successful end of Umeh’s tenure as national chairman of APGA at St. Patrick’s Catholic, Aguluezeigbo, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“We are on the right course; APGA is a moving train and no stopping us until we get to our destination. That destination is that as a people we have a platform; we must unite under APGA and build our party from the South East and position ourselves properly in the politics of Nigeria.

“As a party we are working hard to bring back our old friends to the party. Even former governor, Peter Obi, if he comes back, we’ll accept him.”

“Obi and Umeh brought me into politics and it was through their efforts that I became governor. And we are saying it must be forward ever; we had a very successful convention and we will continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.

In his speech, Umeh said he was grateful to God for granting him the wisdom to successively complete his tenure as national chairman of APGA, recalling the several litigation he had to pass through over the years and praised his legal team led by Pat Ikweto (SAN) for its efforts in winning all the cases.

Umeh regreted that the party lost some prominent members like former Governor Peter Obi and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, but noted that APGA made some inroads into other states outside the South East where it won some seats in the National and state assemblies.

Peter Obi Celebrates Birthday With Primary And Secondary School Students, Donates One Million Naira Each To Their Schools(Photos)

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has felicitated with students and pupils of different primary and secondary schools in Anambra State as a way of celebrating his 54th birthday.

Speaking at one of the schools, Holy Spirit secondary school, Ebenebe, the former Governor said that he was fulfilled celebrating among young pupils/students, who were the future of the society and needed as much inspiration as possible to make them aim towards greatness in lives.

Obi who also visited St. Anthony secondary school, Ikenga and Holy Child Nursery and Primary school, and donated 1 Million Naira each to them, said that as part of the birthday, that he pleaded with those who wanted to support him in any way to donated the money to him to enable him visit schools in remote parts of the State and donate the money to them for continued improvement of their infrastructure. He said that his target was to cover 50 schools and expressed happiness that he has already got the money to cover 20 schools.

On why he did not celebrate like others by throwing lavish feast, Obi said he had no problem with those that chose to celebrate that way, saying “Everybody has what makes him happy. To some, it is lavish celebrations, where champagne would flow freely. For me, what gives me joy is the realisation that at any point, my actions contributes in the building of the society. I have targeted to give 1 Million each to 50 schools in the State and elsewhere. I have got money for 20. The more I get money to assist these schools the happier I am.”

While visiting the schools, Obi admonished the students to be of good behaviour and to take their studies seriously since, according to him, “education remains the most portent currency for competition in the world.”
