If you don't have business savvy, I'd say stay in your job and get to know the kind of business you like to do and study it well over the next 1-2 years. Your severance package could be worth over 10 M by then.

hello house,

A colleague of mine resigned from the company I work and he was paid around N8.4m. This is really tempting. We resumed the same year and I even resumed 5 months before him. My annual take home is N3.6m before taxes. I don't know how much mine will be, but I'm tempted to resign and collect one lump sum to start my own business. I'm confused now. Please advise.

Your annual SALARY/WAGES.

It cannot be "take home" if you don't take it home.

"Take home" is what you get after taxes and all other deductions.

My dear,Pls don't contemplate that, you can be in the job and start a small business with your small savings and possibly build on that, there is nothing like a steady job..Mind you as your promoted that pay-off keep increasing so keep on keeping on

Are you just tempted at the sight of 8m naira or that you have a TESTED and VIABLE business/investment you want to pursue. I put those two words in capital letters because I've seen so many people sink funds into their hobbies without business plan and it all went down the drain.
Once you are out of job with no steady monthly income, you will be amazed at how fast that 'massive' 8m will deplete with time.

So, as the common sense goes, look before you leap

give youself 3 or two years .....

think of a business you want to do.....

for the next two or three years start the busines with side saving from your salary

from personal experience, when one starts business, he will make mistakes in financial decisions etc, make those mistakes while u still can afford it and grow experienced in such business, then when the business grows or requires growth based on potential, u can resign and put in a lump sum to invest in your business.

also its dangerous having a lump sum at the initial stage of business....speaking from experience

but when capital is not readily available....initiates and ideas worth thousands and millions kicks in.

but after 2 or so years your 8 million will be sensilby invested in what ever business you do.

PS: no guts no glory ooo, nice idea ur thinking of business. i believe every one looses their job some where along the line some where

if you are sure of getting the money and you have a business plan, go ahead and resign nothing as good as being your own boss. good luck.

"A bird in hand is worth a thousand in the bush". If I were you,I would quickly take the money, put it in a fixed deposit and begin to consult on the right business to do. My opinion!

Op, resign and see yourself cooling off to nothing.
You get a lump sum only when you retire or you're made redundant not when you willingly resign.

Do you due research before greed gets the better of you!

The reason why I said you should take the chance is because there's no job security, you never know if such an opportunity would come again even if you decide to keep the job..

Pls don't try it all, what is 8m. Your annual salary, leave all, Xmas bonus & other in a year is more than half of it. Pls pray. Keep ur job & still invest.

Honestly! If you have a good business idea & you are prepared to face the risk. Now that you are young is the best time to start your own business, because young age is the best time you can absorb any risk & still get back on your feet.

LEt some one in HR secretly calculate your terminal benefit.

BAsed on the amount, ask your self what you can use the lump sum for.

Are you unhappy about your job ?

Why not look for another job instead and run ur business alongside.
