I stirred the soup again before finally lifting it off the fire. I had battled with the soup and was glad that it came out nice. At least it wasn't as bad as my imagination has feared and I knew deep within me that father would like it. Mother had gone inside the house after Peter startled her to reality by pushing the gate with so much force out of excitement. His action earned him a thorough ear-twisting which made the boy wonder what crime he committed, the excitement supposedly dying within him. I gave him I-told-you look and continued with what I was doing. Peter is fond pushing the gate that way and I have always warned him but he never listened although mother had never showed any indication that she was uncomfortable with his actions. But today was different. There is always a first time to everything anyway.
Dera had left the kitchen after complaining endlessly about the smoke leaving me to do the dishes. Peter on the other had recoiled into his shell after being shunned by mother and so I left the poor boy to sulk to his taste. I was rinsing the plates when I heard the gate opened. I looked up to see a skinny figure coming towards the house, the face unclear to me until he drew closer. It was father afterall! Instinctively, I dropped the plates and ran towards him. He stopped in his stride slightly taken aback by the figure that was looming closer. I lunged at him and almost had the two of us falling.
"Welcome father" I said breathlessly
Father stepped back to take a good look at me.
"I can't believe my eyes. You are all grown up" he said with a look of awe.
Peter drew the blinds aside to take a look at the drama that was going on and I beckoned on him to come and greet father and he tiptoed out shyly.
"Good evening father" father knelt down and drew him into an embrace.
I turned to see mother standing in the doorway carefully observing us, a smile plastered on her face without uttering a word. Father looked up to see her and their face locked in series of transmission. Father eyes held in it disappointment while mother's was indifferent. I took a hint on their uneasiness and I drew Peter towards the kitchen leaving the two in a world of their own.

I fixed father's bathing water and proceeded to serve his dinner. The house had become awfully silent and I wondered if mother even shared a word of welcome with father as I hadn't heard a word since both of them entered the house. Peter was beginning to doze off on the kitchen stool and I stirred him to wake before he will fall off from the stool.
Dera opened the gate and sauntered into the compound bearing a smug expression on his face.
"Father is back" I whispered to him as he drew closer to the kitchen.
"Like if I care" he said taking a neat portion on the kitchen bench.
"That's rude. At least show some concern, he's still our father."
"Our father indeed! He only fathered us by name and not in deeds". Dera said a hurt expression in his eyes.
I stared at him short of what to say. The hurt in his eyes tugged at my heart and I sat beside him temporarily abandoning my duty of serving the dinner.
"He's a better man now" I said turning my face from him to hide my misty eyes, silently praying that father will live to those words. Dera only shrugged.
"I agree he was...." The words drained out of my mouth when father emerged from the room ready to have his bath.
I quickly pinched Dera to remind him of his manners when he stared instead of greeting father and he muttered a disgruntled 'welcome father".
"Such a big boy now" father said patting his head.
I placed the food on the small table in the sitting room and sniffing sound from the other room drew my attention. I tiptoed closely, drew the blinds enough to see mother's face sobbing. I dropped the blinds in confusion as I wondered what her source of grief was. I hadn't heard the two exchanging words and father appeared too tired to have hit her. Or is there a sobbing syndrome that attacks mother whenever father is around?
The opening of the bathroom door told me that father is done having his bath and as I made to go and get his drinking water, mother hastily wiped her eyes pretending to look normal. And I marvelled at her transition.

The silence that lingered as we ate our dinner thickened and could slice through a wall. The silence and the cold stares was beginning to gnaw at me especially from mother and father. The two had hardly shared a word inspite of our presence in the room. I hadn't expected a grand homecoming and happy family re-union but this is worse than I anticipated. I shared the piece of meat into three portions and had Dera and Peter take a share before I left the remnants of the soup for the both of them. As I washed my hands in the kitchen I felt the urge to leave the house save for the time that was gradually drawing to dusk. The coldness and the distance that thawed between those two was making me very comfortable and I sat on the kitchen stool silently that dawn breaks soonest.
Dera brought out the remnants of the dishes and set it on the kitchen table.
"Having a second thought about father's homecoming big sister?" Dera said wiping his hands on his shorts. I looked sharply at him, my tongue refusing to utter a word.
"It seemed both of them can barely tolerate each other. I just pray they do better than this".
He said and strode off towards the room. I knew that such awkwardness would hardly escape Dera's notice. I sighed and walked towards the room my mind bent on forcing myself to sleep. Peter was already sleeping on the hard cold floor. I spread the mat, made lie on the mat and joined him leaving enough space for Dera when he decides to go to bed. I closed my eyes trying to recollect all that happened that evening and why mother had remained cold towards father. Is it that she had not really forgiven him for the shame he made her go through or that the love she claimed she had for him had slowly dissipated with the years? I shut my eyes tightly trying to fight the pangs of fears that engulfed me should the house become worse than it already is.

It was supposed to be a school day but the town crier has announced earlier in the day that some news got into the kings ear that the people of Ome are staging a war against us because of the land dispute. No one knows what they have up their sleeve and so the king advised that parents should keep their school children at home for safety. We have suspended all plans of attending school for the day while waiting for further instructions from the king.
I folded my dresses neatly into my bag. As usual, the silence from last night has propounded like one in a graveyard. Save for the morning greeting, there has been no discussion of any sort all day as everyone maintained sealed lips like it was an abomination to talk. Mother had left unusually very early for the shop and returned only to give us bread for our breakfast. Father on the other hand had been sleeping for most part of the day after going through his bag and box of clothes. He even surprised me this morning by going on his knees to say some words of prayers and I wondered at this great change.
I glanced at Dera and Peter who were making a new cage for their new bird and shook my head in disbelief at much time they could spend on a wasteful venture. The other bird hadn't lived for another week and he is concentrating so much on such venture again. Its their business anyway. I heard a loud thud and I kept still to ascertain where the voice was coming from. Just then mother pushed the gate with so much force and ran into the compound stopping for as much as to lock the gate securely behind her. Dera and Peter looked up immediately, all our eyes fixed on her as she walked towards the house in unsteady feet.
"Mother...."I ran to support her and we managed to make her sit on the pavement.
"They are finally on us" she said breathlessly.
"They? Who are they?" I asked in fear-laden voice.
"Ome people. They are everywhere with guns and cutlasses. It seemed they have declared war on us".
