Inverter users pls help me decide.

I have order a 1.2kva 12V Mercury inverter with LCD display at a very affordable price using a voucher. Including shipping, it is N18,315. I already have a single 200mah 12V NNPC used battery US made. My friend actually bought 2 batteries and a Luminous ecovolt 900va 12V inverter but uses only one battery because of the charging capacity so he let he have the other one.

I cant afford the same Luminous inverter now which is a pure sine wave inverter and cost atleast 31k with shipping. So i pounced on the mercury which is cheap but Modified sine wave. Thats the expected downside which i read that equipments running on it may tend to over heat while inductive loads like fans florescent lights will have problems in form of humming noise and heat up from prolong use. other problems may be humming noise from inverter itself and electrical interference with radio and TV signals. I am worried that i may be disappointed with the fact that is a modified sine wave and could irritate me once i start using it. So i might end up wasting money on this buy. I will be using a standing fan, 32" LED TV, 2 decoders, Home theater and 1 energy saving bulb from sitting room pendant light.

Of course its pay on delivery so i can call them up and cancel if i change my mind. Who has used a mercury inverter that is modified sine wave? I need a user review and encouragement.

Don't stress yourself.I have been usibg metcyry 2.4kva modified wave inverter for over 2years now with my 40inch Samsung LED TV series and there is no issue and no noticeable difference compared to when I had Mopower pure sinevwave inverter.

Thanks omotoda.

I just recieved my inverter but felt heart broken when i held it and it was less than half as heavy as the Luminous 900va i got for my friend. Though its just above half of the price of the Luminous.

I cross my fingers and hope it functions and charges my 200ah battery well.

Preliminary review

This is against Luminous ecovolt 900va 12 and Mercury 1.2kva 12v.

Weight: Luminous weighs like more than half bag of cement (25kg atleast) while Mercury is like a Plastic chair that has no arm rest.

Wave form: for the non tech savvy, it wont make sense. However, because Luminous is pure sine wave, it is absolutely quiet in operation while modified sine wave of Mercury sounds like walking under a 330kv transmission line popularly called high tension (the biggest kind). Its a bit irritating especially for sleep but TV sound will suppress it. I didnt notice the expected humming noise on the standing fan.

Cooling fan: both have cooling fans. While that of Luminous comes on/off automatically depending on the temperature Mercury stays on so it is another irritating sound when you wish to sleep with the inverter on.

Display: from afar you can deduce the status of Luminous but can only know Mercury is on/off. Luminous has bright green, red and orange lights. Green will tell you if inverter is ON or working on UPS mode, power supply and charging from afar. Red shows battery low and overload while the orange is standby. However, from afar, Mercury's blue LCD backlight says it is on but no other information can be seen. Closer, Mercury shows more info like battery level, load level, input and output voltages and others. Thats cool.

Output: Luminous has one 15 amp round type while Mercury has three 3 flat type sockets. I prefer the Mercury on this.

input: on inverter mode which is basic for my usage Luminous operates within 100-280v while Mercury is even better at 90-280v. We do get low voltage supply from PHCN in my area so this will help in charging even with lower voltage. This means when there is low voltage Luminous will cut out before Mercury. Good one though i have not tested this.

I am yet to test charging time and status alert sounds.

Guy, most inverters are light weight now because they have integrated circuits as against the like of luminous that have transformers.I have been using the same mercury inverter for close to 2 years now with no issues.Go ahead and enjoy your inverter mate!

Buying an inverter does not have to cost and arm and a leg, it is sad that many Nigerian are put off investing in Inverters because of the presumed cost. The truth is that one can install a quality inverter (with in-built battery charger) that can power a 3-bedroom flat for as little as N25,000 (1.2 KVA) or N26,000 (2.4 KVA) You can also buy a Power Inverter (without in-built battery charger) for under N10,000 (1 KVA)
In my house we have installed a Mercury 2.4 KVA Inverter and it works like a charm, I consider it to be one of the best investment I have ever made. Gone are the days when I had to put up with the horrible sound of a Generator and running around looking for fuel during scarcity episodes.

If cash is not an issue I would advise you go for 200AH instead.I know blue gate is very reliable and should be like 46,000 or thereabout.

Review continued...

Charging: it seem to be charging fine but i am worried. We usually have good hours of electricity, i am worried the battery will over charge due to the long hrs of charge it may get and whether the inverter has the capacity to drop its charging current when full.

Display: After 4hrs of charging, i came home to find battery bars full from 2bars at time i left and 3 bars of load level flashing. I wonder what caused the load to start flashing when the load i connected is not enough to bring on 1 bar of 4. When i tested in my friends house with his 42" plasma and industrial fan, i had 1bar. Mine is a 32"LED and a small stand fan. When i left home threre was no bar on the load level but now 3 of 4 are flashing for reasons i cant phatom.

Cooling: the fan remains on as long as there is mains supply and when inverter is on. Therefore its possible the fan will be overworked since its now obvious that it will work permanently with or without power supply. The fan needs rest but why didnt mercury design it to rest when not needed?

Changeover: The change over on inverter mode of supply from mains to battery when mains from NEPA is lost isnt very perfect. While mains was on gen and fuel got finished, change was perfect. When i turn off input supply from socket, change is ok too. But once when we lost PHCN supply TV and DSTV decoder tripped of leaving Home theatre on. On another occasion, TV only tripped off and on again but DSTV and Home theatre remained on.

Low voltage cutout: this one is impressive just like the manual says. Our PHCN voltage dropped to 92V but supply remained/charging and didnt cut out to battery. The real down side here is that unlike Luminous the mains cuts out too. The luminous only stops charging at its 100v cut out but continue send out mains no matter how small. I expect mecury to supplying what ever it recieves on inverter off mode and on inverter on mode transfer to battery when voltage drops below 90v.

I have charged up to 12hrs now but charging last bar still flashes.

Re: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by adanny01(m): 1:54am On Aug 05, 2015
I am experiencing serious problems with the inverter. The inverter is deriorating everyday of use.

On my display review i mentioned 3 of 4 bars of load level flashing when its not supposed to. Other problems have shown up one after the other.
1. 2-3 load level bars flashing
2. 1st bar of the load level is constant now even with no load
3. Battery mode display icon has disappeared even when inverter is on baterry mode
4. A/C mode display icon has disappeared even when the inverter is in A/C mode
5. When inverter is turned on while main supply is available it switches to battery mode and refuse to reenter A/C mode until i turn it off. It also stops charging as it is on battery mode even when there is PHCN/GEN supply.

The Mercury 2.4 Inverter is excellent value for money. I have been using it for 6 months and I have had no issues with it. It cost me only N27,000 (2.4 KVA), I use it with two 100 A/H batteries which cost me N 28,000 each and it gives my family light for 12 hours a day. Since I have been using this Inverter we have not turned on our generator for even a second or spent a single kobo on fuel.

The only regret I have is not buying two 200 A/H batteries which would have enabled us to run the Inverter (with fully charged batteries) for 24 hours. You cannot use 100 /AH with 200 /AH batteries, so if I wish to add more batteries to my bank, my only option is to keep buying 100 /AH, which will take up more space.

Inverter gurus in the house please I need advice. I just bought and installed a 5kva/96v Mopower inverter along with 8 synergy batteries about a week now and it's charging current is 15Amps. But if u know Mopower inverter , when it is fully charged the battery bars is normally 10 bars at 100% fully charged. When NEPA light is ON and after a long while (hours) it display on the screen "Battery charged". But when NEPA takes their light the battery bars on display would either be 6 or 5 bars.
I complained to the installer/technician that something is wrong and he keeps telling me that nothing is wrong. Instead he said Mopower has adjusted the their new inverters. That the 5 or 6 bars I see is the same as the normal 10 bars when the inverter is fully charged. I don't want to believe that. And I use it for now for only lighting and two TV and yet the 5 bars will reduce to 3 bars in less than 6 hours when their is no NEPA light
Please I need urgent reply
