This is in response to this thread https://www.nairaland.com/2480780/reasons-why-first-class-students#36314109

Please graduate with a first class if you can. First class graduates are respected all over the world but hated on Nairaland. Most nairalanders believe that all first class graduates crammed their way through school, which is not always the case. The truth is that a first class or second-class upper graduate stands a better chance to get a good job in Nigeria. Most companies hire only first class and 2-1 graduates. I respect first class graduates a lot because they must have put in a lot of discipline and dedication to come out with such grade. One thing i have noticed is that first class graduates generally perform better in the work place. They put in the same passion and dedication and they tend to be focused.

I always get angry when I hear people mention the likes of Dangote and Bill Gates as reasons to graduate with a poor grade. The question is this: how many "third-class" or "pass" graduates have made it in life compared to the proportion that are wallowing in poverty? How many school drop-outs have achieved something in life? Very few, I must say.

Who said first class graduates do not own businesses? Many have built empires for themselves.

Many first class graduates also remain the the academics and end up as professors. They contribute to the existing body of knowledge and offer practical solutions to problems bedeviling our society today. The assertion that they do not contribute any thing to humanity is not necessarily true.

This post should not be misconstrued as saying having is a first class is a ticket to success in life. Like they always say, life is what you make out of it. Most importantly, first class certificate could be a stepping stone to achieve great things.

so you ran here to come and say this?

Id expect that part of graduating with good grades would include being able to hold your grounds logically to justify your opinions.

This is an act of cowardice.

I read your post and you honestly want to tell me in your small world of graduating with first class, which by the way is one your kinds biggest problems every first class graduate has a great job?

You see coming here to start a new thread wont change facts.

However let me come into your small world (something we who didnt graduate with first class are fvcking good at doing) and shatter it

Graduate first class get a ggod job recession comes, company (started obviously by someone who didnt graduate first class) downsizes. You think if your deliverables are not good they will say because you graduated first class lets sack the guy with good deliverables after all he didnt graduate first class?

Yes lets leave Aliko and Bill Gates

Please name one First class graduate who has been able to birth a company, see it come to bloom and then provide a means of livelihood for other members of the society.

One.

Just One.

I dare you.

Now that company youre going to work with as a first class graduate you think theory will provide revenue to keep the balance sheets to pay your salary?

Look carefully its the guys without the first class who pull out all the stops to make things happen.

After your first two to four years experience on the job and deliverables become what matter to any right thinking employer.

your case is like a year 4 student in the university screaming i scored 320 in Jamb, seriously of what relevance is that in your fourth year i beg you?

I made 2:1 in schl bt let me tell those who graduated wit 3rd class r nw entrepreneurs. They av made cool money. I tank God for my position nw o. Although still climbing my ladder of success. Bt those guys r already ontop of there game. Although they still envy my academic achievement. 1st class grade does nt in anyway determine success. My Mum is perfct example. She did nt even attend Uni or Poly nt to talk of her grades yet her achievement in Business is to me worth tankin God.

First of all, the thread didn't encourage graduating with a bad grade. It only emphasized the need of working on your personality while also studying.

Also, a friend in my school once told me that most lecturers in her department all graduated with a 2nd class lower honours. So i don't know where you got your assertions that most first class graduates become lecturers.

Most first class graduates get retained by their schools. Some choose not stay probably because they already got a mouth-watering offer elsewhere.

Who is he to determine who becomes "somebody in life"? Even Bill Gates said “Although I dropped out of college and got lucky pursuing a career in software, getting a degree is a much surer path to success. College graduates are more likely to find a rewarding job, earn higher income, and even, evidence shows, live healthier lives than if they didn’t have degrees,”

You need to change your approach to life. I did not even want to respond to you at first. Stop envying others. Be happy when people around you succeed. Hate will not get you anywhere.

You dared me to mention any first class graduate that owns a company or has impacted positively on the society. One of such people is Jarus. He is an active nairalander. He graduated with a first class in OAU and he has impacted so many lives and I am quite sure he is leading a good life.

I know the advice you will give to your children is to make sure they graduate with poor grades, or you might not even deem it fit to send them to school in the first place.

Hatred will only choke and stunt your growth.

Re: Reasons Why You Should Graduate With Good Grades by Nobody: 9:49am On Jul 28, 2015
There is a general misconception to what success is.

From a general perspective, success is measured y how much money, power and fun you can gather in life.

But, if that is the definition of success, you will be wrong to expect most first class graduates to pursue that dream. You will therefore be right to say First Class graduates are not that successful in the real life.

Now, switch to the perspective of a first class grad.

The first ingredient to securing a first class is to agree that Life is beyond catching fun, lavishing wealth and wielding power. Most first class students hardly push for those things, both in school and outside.

What drives the motivation of any first class student and gives him/her pleasure is the wonder of being able to handle what colleagues see as problem and trash it out completely. What makes them smile is being able to understand complex realities that colleagues consider as "over syllabus".

The same way the rich, social, famous and truancy students chase them in class to help with solving that crazy assingment is the same way the rich, famous, business owners will chase them as consultants in their firms.

The pride of first class grads is not primarily in making money....cos that in itself...is the meaning of "first class"

Seriously, it's not possible to take advice from someone like you. Truth is you have nothing to offer beyond figments of your imagination & acts of distance psychophancy.

Completely agree with you on this.

Then again that depends on the environment the first class is coming from.

You get me a first class student from a school like the UK. I'll photocopy this your assertion on him (or her). Have you met with a first class student from Nigeria? as in really interacted with them? Now please don't get me wrong I'm not saying all of them but the average one of them. Outside the theories they read how many can actually profer solutions to problems like you rightly highlighted?

The schools here are not designed to make them think. Cram the text come to the exam pour it in the script doesn't I repeat doesn't in anyway fit into the blueprint you wrote above.

I had one who claimed he graduated first class & couldn't even string his comprehension of English properly.

Cram well pour in the exam get first class gets a job...fades into obscurity cos life after school goes beyond theory.

You underestimate the value & importance of relationships in the process of finding solutions to issues...think this particular bit through again.

Your assumptions about me flatter me. Unfortunately never even got any higher education stopped at kindergarten so even third class is a super advancement for my present level.

There does that assist with your erectile dysfunction? Is it standing well now?

Now let me help your egotiscally pervesely sorry excuse of what you assume is a life.

Get a copy of Forbes.Read 100 richest then come back to justify your claim.

That's one.

Secondly ... why am I even talking to this waste of space. So you had to get Bill gates to justify your claim? No first class graduate? Dude if you ever find yourself if court don't try to defend yourself, you'll just be working for the lawyer for free.
This is part of the type of thing we're talking about here.

Uhm ok I'm looking at too 100 companies and your dudes companies name is not making the list so what's your basis? Never even heard of it before now, please what do they do?

Furthermore only one example?

I know how your emotions are taking control of you right now & intellect is sent to the aft, but you need to calm down, read, understand before you rush to press keypad because you have data running on your device.

Now go back to my post & read it again.

This time S-L-O-W-L-Y I don't care how smart you've been deceived to be. You clearly have issues with understanding

I think you are officially the silliest person on Nairaland. I was wondering why you were reasoning like a toddler. It is very clear to me now. Your parents didnt afford you the opportunity to go to school. School is not just about western education. Morals are taught there too.

Success means different things to different people. So many people find satisfaction and fulfillment in their work. Talk about engineers, doctors, lecturers etc. They lead happy lives. People that finish with good grades work with the best companies in the world, proffer solutions to problems in the society and move up the ladder to become CEOs and MDs and they live a fulfilled life, not forgetting to mention that they become affluent too. Some also set up their own businesses in the process.

On the other hand, all the "third-class" and "pass" graduates i know are presently wishing they came out with better grades. They are finding life very difficult at the moment.

If I may ask, what company have you set up? Tell me how you have impacted the society. Tell me the name of your company, what you do and the number of people you have employed, since you believe that people that illiterates like you/people that graduate with poor grades birth companies and impact positively on the society. AND PLEASE TELL ME YOUR COMPANY IS ONE OF THE FIRST 100 BIGGEST COMPANIES IN THE WORLD
