N’Delta youths threaten NLNG over plan to build shipyard outside Rivers

NIGER Delta youths have threatened to stage a massive protest and possibly shut down facilities of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG), if the company fails to reverse its decision to build dry-dock shipyard outside its operational base in Rivers State. Over 30 youth leaders handed in the threat yesterday in Port Harcourt while briefing journalists on the developments.

Some of the youth organizations include, the National Youths Council of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, Ijaw Youths Council, Bonny Youths Federation, Niger Delta People Volunteer and Salvation Front, Rivers Ethnic Youth Leaders Coalition among others. Speaking under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Organizations, the spokesman of the group, Simeon Wilcox said, “the youths would shutdown NLNG facilities if all peaceful modalities failed to convince the company to reverse the decision to build its shipyard outside the region.”

Wilcox disclosed that the youths were particularly grieved on the fact that NLNG decided against all odds to construct a dry-dock shipyard worth $1.5 billion dollars in an area outside its operational base in Niger Delta. “The NLNG did a kangaroo feasibility study without the knowledge of the stakeholders from Rivers State and Niger Delta at large,” the spokesman said.

He said such decision taken by NLNG was seen as a clear case of insensitive and provocative corporate plan, adding that the company has failed to consider the high unemployment rate in the Niger Delta region, especially in Bonny Kingdom. Wilcox said, “We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, Chief Nyesom Wike and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to intervene on this all important matter in order to avert a serious anarchy.

“We are going to shutdown the NLNG facilities if the company fails to do the needful, the youths of Rivers State and that of Niger Delta would be mobilize to protest across every NLNG operational community until the company consider the interest of the region.”

Its funny though that many of the oil agencies are
headquartered outside the Niger Delta. We even
have a refinery in Kaduna. If the NLNG has been a private ish, I won't complain. But a government
agency taking its shipyard away from its base of
operations is weird to me.

For a company like NLNG which has maintain a very good relationship with their host communities unlike others like shell, this was a stupid decision. Which I can only attribute to Babs omotowa attempt to steer vital NLNG buisness back to his region after ibeneche's outright and sudden relocation to the south.

this is not about tribalism, it's about opportunity and common sense, what is the sense in building a seaport in the city with the most seaports in the nation...taking jobs away from those who need it and are the bane if your buisness to somewhere else, it is just ridiculous and an insult to host communities.

actually, NLNG is a private company but with the Nigerian govt. As a majority shareholder but you are right in your accession, this plan makes absolutely no sense and the company is grasping fir straws attempting to defend it.

That is Lagos for you always taken whatever that should not belong to them and tomorrow they will claim state with highest IGR and employement. In the same vain that Kano and Kaduna warehousing imported goods when the real businessman/importers are men from the South check the distance/routes and our map. Reaping where you did not sow Nigeria biggest problem economical. Infact, if those plunder tribes can they would have naturely relocated all oil wells to Lagos and Kaduna. This is unhealthy capital flight to our national development. And which year will the thieves and the owners be at peace?

Hmmm I knew a Yoruba must have a hand in this new development. They have since been trying to bring NLNG back ever since they moved their headquarters from Lagos back to rivers. Hmm.

I hope the youths in that meeting think twice in what they are doing. NLNG have been one of the good guys. They understand the plight of SS individuals therefore, I'm sure if they went and spoke to am in a calm voice rather that threaten like they doing now NLNG will very likely listen to them. Right now, their threats would present the opposite result.

Whatever resources they need to build that dockyard, they can get in Niger Delta. Question is what are that running from?

personally, I think common sense will prevail after all these, if youths are threatening is because NLNG refused to listen when chiefs and elders wanted to negotiate, LNG will not want any noise, however small to disturb their already fledgling buisness.

This is how they have been creating their IGR, parasiting on other regions projects and attributing it to a phantom sophistication.
Violence is not the solution though.

ChimaObi Ibeneche an Igbo man from Imo state forced the relocation of NLNG headquarters from Lagos to Rivers state. Guess who were those behind the location of such in Lagos to start with? Yea you guessed right, the Yorubas. Guess who tried to use every blackmail tactics possible to armtwist Chimaobi and delay/ possibly prevent the relocation of the company to Rivers state? The Yorubas. http://saharareporters.com/2011/10/27/nlng-managing-director-70-million-headquarters-relocation-controversy

Now we know why some people are holding tight to the Mirage of One Nigeria and are having heart attack at the mention of Biafra.

Okpara over saw the relocation of Shell from Owerri to PH, cos he knew that was the right thing to do. But after the war, Awo ensured all the oil companies Headquarters were located to Lagos.

Hope the usual " Igbo want our Oil people" are listening.

Yes, the whole Lagos-Ibadan Press tagged GEJ as clueless, but Yorubas now want something that rightfully belongs to GEJ's people.

As an Igboman, I am so elated that ndi MBAMMILI have recovered from the hypnosis they were placed under by the combined forces of the Nigerian govt and certain elements in the Delta that cooperated with feds to hoodwink the people.

It is decisions of this nature that has made RADIO BIAFRA the number one radio station in the Niger Delta. People are waking up to their rights

They should use civil means to drive their point. Why are youths from that region (apart from cross river an akwaibom) always violent? Maybe that's why NNLG is scared of them in the first place. undecided

@post, I think it's the right thing to do sha, development should spread across. There's no sense in siting such project in Lagos.

The faster they close down NLNG, the better for Biafra

It is criminal pillage of biafran resources to site a ship yard in badagry and come to shout one nigeria

After building it in badagry, they should use the ship to carry coconut water

"With the war ended, and as a
Commissioner in Rivers State, I soon
found that the Rivers State for which I
had
fought did not end my nightmare. In the
first place, oil money from Ogoni country
(as well as Ijaw country) was being carted
away to Lagos, leaving the Ogoni illiterate
and backward. This is anti-federalism".

Above is what Saro Wiwa, the then commander in chief of the "Igbos want our Oyel" Army, had to say after the war.

Know, your enemies, that's the first rule of engagement. Some people don't know their enemies.

Ndiigbo always stand for justice and equity, only envy and jealousy of our progress as a people blinded some people from seeing that.

Good move by the youths....
Tomorrow they will give scholarships to hausa and yoruba kids while the children in the Niger delta cant boast of a good school anywhere in the region. Otedola and wale tinubu can use money stolen from illegal deals to support and build whatever in their region.

Wailers can only wail.

Business people will always be business people. You can't tell them where and how to do their business. If they find lagos viable for their corporate affairs, who are you illiterate elders and youths to say otherwise?

Wail on.
