She has the key to save him and change their situation. Regardless of how they
got in this predicament , she STILL holds the key. Now she could give him the
key and "set him free" but she doesn't trust him. She thinks if he could get
away by any means he would and leave her . . . . to die! But he wants to save
her regardless of their situation. He will stretch himself far and thin in order to
save her to have her to hold her. However he's powerless to change anything
his circumstance only but allows so much and unfortunately it will never be
enough. Not enough to make her trust him and not enough to reach her. He'd
break his own chains if he could but he simply can't. And even though she's
the one dying, she has the most power. She could save them both but she
would die before she trust him. And he'll eventually die without the key.

From the girl's point of view,this is a lose-lose situation anyway. If she doesn't give him the key, they'll both die and if she does, he'll save himself,leave her and she'll die. She's gonna die anyways. So, she should just give him the key to at least prevent a death.
She's got nothing to lose.

Two ways out I see. First one is she gives him the key he unlocks himself then he dives in to save her. Second is she unlocks herself and swims out to unlock him.

Second is way better in my opinion.

Same thought here. But from the narrative, I think the key can only open the guy's lock.

Don't you all see that the moment she gives him the key,he will have to let go of her hand in order to unlock himself?She will drown.

What she needs to do is to be fast,it will take her less than a minute to unlock herself while trying to hold her breath then ascends to unlock him.

her efforts cannot save them but his ; however his efforts are made potent by her.he us willing to save them if she empowers his effort but she is reluctant because of insecurity afterall she has nothing to loose as they will both go down if she refuses plus she fears he may not consider her after she empowers him.he desperately needs that empowerment for them both.
2 issues are here: her reluctance at empowering him and the uncertainity of his ultimate action when empowered.

hmmmmm. this one no be small thing o. In the first place if she trust her man then why delay in giving him the key so they can both be save. on another thought I think the man is wicked and selfish, he is not trustworthy. why wait for her to pass him the key when he can swing her/lift her up to safety and she unlocks him immediately she is up or pass him the key.
what's the assurance that he will get the key if she throws the key up while still hanging there, the key wunt fall back into the ocean where none of then can reach it. To me it's a simple logic. They can both reach a mutual agreement and get out of that ish or stay there forever.
