How Entertainment Contributes To Nigeria’s GDP By Anthony Ada Abraham — Apr 9, 2014 1:27 am | 0 Comments The entertainment industry has worked towards improving the lives of people while unemployment rate has averaged almost five per cent for the period between 1976 and 1998. But the statistics must be interpreted with caution as the entertainment industry has moved from grass to grace. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM writes. In the 1980s, Nigeria’s economy was hardly as buoyant as it is today. According to the ongoing economic reform programme, plans are in place to put the economy on a recovery path, with an accompanying level of inflation that is totally minimal. Today, the Nigerian entertainment industry is ranked third, globally, in terms of quality of production and gross earnings. In 2013, Robert Orya, managing director, Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), said Nollywood ranked third globally in gross earnings. According to him, the revenue the film industry has generated in the last three years was between $300m and $800m. “The global film and entertainment industry generated about $90.6bn revenue in 2010,” Orya explained, saying, “The revenue increased to $102.7 bn in 2012. Most of these revenue streams are from theatrical distribution. North America contributed the largest market share of about 40 per cent. Europe, Middle East and Africa accounted for 24 per cent, Latin America 20 per cent, and Asia Pacific made only three per cent contribution.” In addition, a report released in London in 2012, by Euromonitor International and Reed Exhibitions Limited, organisers of the World Travel Market (WTM), predicated a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in Africa, as a result of the boom in the local film industry dubbed ‘Nollywood’. The GDP growth figure for the African region was contained in a report, titled: ‘WTM Global Trends Report 2012’. The report explained that Nigeria’s massive film industry , ‘Nollywood’, is a rising star in Africa’s tourism industry, just as it declared it the world’s second largest film industry, volume-wise, after India’s Bollywood and ahead of the USA/b’s Hollywood, with more than 2,000 films produced annually. Specifically, the report predicated this GDP growth in Africa to be at 5.2 per cent in 2012 and 2013, while trips/arrivals will rise to 4.5 per cent in 2012 and 4.6 per cent in 2013, adding that intra-regional travels is crucial for the African tourism industry, due to “strong business, linguistic and cultural links” between many countries. Nigeria’s Nollywood industry, now captured under “Motion pictures, sound recording and music production,” has made a huge leap to about N9trn in size. Analysts had said the movie segment made about N1.72trn in 2013. “Motion pictures, sound recording and music production,” is one of the 13 new activities that have been included in the computation framework. Others are entertainment, research, patents and copyrights, etc. The number of economic activities reported in the rebased GDP computation framework was increased to 46 as against 33 in the previous series. According to Business Day, the rebasing exercise shows the huge leap how the entire entertainment sector had been hugely underrated over the years. The sector was earlier classified amongst ‘other services’ that barely contribute N5bn to the annual GDP. The share has risen, sharply, from its once-insignificant status to become the first five. “What surprises me the most is the ‘Motions pictures, sound recording and music production’, which jumped to N9trn, which is a huge amount. I didn’t expect that kind of jump. Initially, it was under ‘other services’ where items that are too small are captured during the GDP computation,” a source said. Also, in the last five years, the industry has grown in terms of quality and has been rated the third most valuable movie industry in the world, behind Hollywood and Bollywood. The development has also impacted on returns. Victor Okhai, a film-maker, says a new crop of film makers have, over the years, brought some level of professionalism into the industry. Nollywood lauds the growth Nollywood directors and investors, on Monday, hailed the industry’s inclusion in Nigeria’s economic data for the first time, calling it a “recognition of the sector’s growing power and influence”. Africa’s most populous nation and leading oil producer became the continent’s largest economy on Sunday, when the government announced the long-overdue recalculation of her gross domestic product. When the last revision was carried out in 1990, Nollywood’s contribution to the economy was negligible. But statistics indicated that the industry, which has a huge following across Africa, was now worth some N853.9bn ($5.1bn, €3.7bn) or 1.2 per cent of GDP. “It is significant that the economic importance of Nollywood is being better recognised,” Zack Orji, one of the industry’s most prominent and accomplished artistes, told the AFP. The founder and chief executive of video-on-demand firm iROKOtv, said he was not surprised by the data and how it reflects Nigeria’s status as one of the world’s leading film production centres. “It (Nollywood) has been growing steadily for the past 20 years and can, legitimately, be uttered in the same breath as Hollywood… when it comes to movie output data, with between 1,500 and 2,000 movies being made every year,” he added. The British-educated entrepreneur, whose firm has been dubbed the “African Netflix,” said the inclusion in economic data was a “landmark” and reflected Nollywood’s dynamism. Nigeria’s revision of GDP data saw the size of the economy jump from $264bn in 2012 to $453bn, with projections of a further increase in 2013 to $510bn. The exercise was carried out to factor in changes in production and consumption over the last 24 years and showed a significant shift in the structure of the economy, according to the government. Telecommunications, for example, were also included to reflect the explosion in mobile phone ownership in recent years. The United Nations said, last May, that Nollywood is estimated to employ some 1,000,000 people and had the potential to create 1,000,000 more in the future if properly managed. Its release of about 50 films a week puts it in the same bracket in terms of production with movie-mad India, although revenues — thought to be about $590m a year — are considerably less. Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, last year, announced a N3bn cash injection to develop Nollywood, which was considered a fair recognition of the sector’s importance. Orji said problems remained – not least film piracy – but added that planned improvements to distribution would help ensure revenues generated would get back to those involved in production. Nollywood films are as loud, brash and argumentative as the country itself, frequently tackling social and cultural issues and relying heavily on melodrama. They are thought to cost as little as $25,000 — a fraction of the $250m on average that it takes to make a film in Hollywood — and can be turned around within a month from filming to sale. Most films are sold as DVDs at the roadside, either at market stalls, from wheelbarrows or by hawkers at traffic lights. These are the rough edges which cannot be overlooked for an industry touted to be on its way to becoming world-class. I won't call you names now. You see your life @ the bolded? Entertainment : music industry, movie industry et al. Now you might want to prove me wrong that it's only english that generate the above GDP? http://leadership.ng/entertainment/364405/entertainment-contributes-nigerias-gdp 1 Like |
